We'll be back on Thursday for the first ODI to see if England can do better.

  2. 'For England there's a lot of work to do'published at 17:11 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

    Sir Alastair Cook
    Ex-England captain on TNT Sports

I think England have come up against the next very talented India side and come up short.

What happens now will be the crucial thing for me in terms of T20. Now you'll see what McCullum and Buttler really think about the T20 team over the next 12 months. They've got a base point.

I'm in awe of this India machine in terms of the amount of talent and options they have at their disposal. And they won't just win in India - they'll win all around the world.

Over the next few years we're going to see a lot of these players. I've loved watching them play.

For England, there's a lot of work to do but it's exciting when that work is ahead of you. It'll be interesting whether they can mould themselves into a better T20 side.

  3. 'It's about bowling the right ball at the right time'published at 17:08 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

India's Varun Chakaravarthy, who won player of the series: "This is the best I've bowled, but there's also a lot of scope to improve. There were a few close balls I shouldn't have bowled too.

"I didn't take them for granted because they're a top side, it's just about bowling the right ball at the right time - that's what I was working on."

On the team's fielding improving: "Obviously the team has been emphasising on improving the fielding standards so it's paying off."

  4. 'High risk, high reward'published at 17:04 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

India captain Suryakumar Yadav on TNT Sports: "This is what we have sat and spoken about what brand of cricket we want to play. We are sticking to it. It is a high-risk, high-reward.

"It is always good to see someone at the top batting like that."

  5. 'I wanted to react and play my shots'published at 17:03 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

India opener Abhishek Sharma after his 135 from 54 balls: "Obviously it is a special one coming for the country. It is always a great feeling.

"When I see it is my day I always try to go from the first ball. The way coach and captain have treated me, they have always wanted this intent and have always backed me.

"When the opponents are all bowling 140-150kph you have to be ready a second before everyone else. I wanted to react to the ball and play my shots."

It'll be interesting to see, next time they play a T20, whether England go down the pace route again or if they think they need a bit more variety in their attack.

  7. 'As good as I've seen in T20s'published at 17:00 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

England captain Jos Buttler: "We're obviously disappointed to lose the series. We've done some things well, there are some things we want to improve upon, but we've got to keep committing to the style of cricket we want to play - just execute better.

"India are a fantastic side, especially at home, and absolutely our guys will be better for the experience. We're always looking to improve and get better."

On positives to take from the T20 series: "I think some of the guys' bowling performances - even today, Brydon Carse and Mark Wood, I thought they were outstanding."

On Abhishek Sharma's innings: "I've seen quite a lot of cricket and that was as good as I've seen in T20s."

On Joe Root returning for the ODI series: "He's a great guy to welcome back into the squad, he's one of the best players in the world and we look forward to the ODI series. It's getting closer and closer to T20s and we're excited for it."

  8. 'The balance as a captain is really hard'published at 16:56 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

    Sir Alastair Cook
    Ex-England captain on TNT Sports

You've got to trust the bowlers - it's all very well a batsman running up to a bowler saying 'have you done this, have you done that'. I know they've been pumped today but these are quality bowlers.

That balance as a captain is really hard to get right - and you don't often get it right when the momentum is going like that.

  9. Postpublished at 16:54 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

"I have seen quite a lot of cricket. That was as good batting I have seen in T20s."

Jos Buttler on Abhishek Sharma's century.

Stick with us to hear what else the England captain had to say.

  10. Abhishek Sharma's wagon wheelpublished at 16:53 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

    Abhishek Sharma's wagon wheel

Abhishek Sharma did not score one run and square leg.

    He pummeled the straight boundaries.

Surely England missed a trick in how they bowled at him?

    Steven Finn
Former England fast bowler on TNT Sports

It was predictable [bowling] from England. Bowling round the wicket to left-handers is a misconception that is cramps batters. It opens both sides of the wicket.

Bowling at Abhishek's hip from over the wicket with fielders on the leg side in hindsight was the way to bowl to him.

It can be hard when the ball is travelling around to make clear decisions. That's why I like Buttler not wicketkeeping and being alongside the bowler at mid-off. It clearly didn't work today.

As bowler feel like want to pick up pace and finish the over. Sometimes it is best to take a breath. Eoin Morgan was very good in that situation and would throw the ball to another fielder so the bowler couldn't bowl.

At times England got a bit rushed. You can feel like your head is in a washing machine.

What an abysmal defeat by England today. Their fast bowlers should learn how to bowl yorkers and not short balls that get hit for six. Archer and Overton should do better.

  17. 'They couldn't think calmly enough'published at 16:38 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

    Sir Alastair Cook
    Ex-England captain on TNT Sports

I think England were surprised by the onslaught and just couldn't think calmly enough to react. I'm not saying they could've bowled them out for 170 or 180, but I don't think they quite reacted.

I don't think their policy of pace on all the time on these wickets quite works.

Just whacking the ball down at 150kph, I don't think, is good enough against these players.

  18. 'It feels great when you contribute as an all-rounder'published at 16:36 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

India's Shivam Dube: "It feels great when you contribute as an all-rounder for the team. I've been doing it for a long time and I've done it today. I was really excited to bowl and what the team wanted from me I gave them.

"The wicket was amazing for the batting side. We enjoyed batting - but today I enjoyed both sides [of the game]."

On going out to bat with Abhishek Sharma: "He told me the wicket was good, to play my shots so I was ready. I knew we were already on top so I just wanted to go hard on the bowlers.

"Working with my new coach, Morne Morkel, he's been helping me with some angles. I got the opportunity today and I delivered."

England's batting was, obviously, pretty shoddy but this match was won in the first innings - arguably the first 10 overs.

India opener Abhishek Sharma smashed 135 from just 54 balls - the highest score for India in T20s.

It was one of the great white-ball knocks. India had 100 on the board inside seven overs and 178 after just 13 overs.
