    Somerset 136 & 73-5 v Hants 196

Of course no chance of promotion or relegation for Hampshire or Somerset, but we will keep focus on this match with second place still up for grabs and a fair amount of prize money for either side.

Both sides will feel what if, they could have beaten Surrey to the title had decisions and weather gone more their way.

But they did not, so Somerset will take second in all three competitions if they win, whilst Hampshire will finish their highest place this season in the Championship after disappointing campaigns in the two white ball formats.

  2. Third batting bonus point for Nottspublished at 11:00 British Summer Time

    Notts 351-6 v Warks

Rob Lord has produced some very pleasing strokes this morning and one of those, clipping Ed Barnard through midwicket for four, takes the home side past 350.

That adds a third bonus point to Nottinghamshire's tally and they'll surely be eyeing another, with a shade above 20 overs for them to get up to 400.

WICKET McManus c Bess b Coad 5published at 10:58 British Summer Time

    Yorks v Northants 128-7

This is hard work for George Bartlett, who is squared up, playing and missing Matt Fisher from the crease and the ball zips through to the keeper, Jonny Bairstow.

He survives a maiden over nonetheless.

An optimistic appeal for LBW by Ben Coad against Lewis McManus is turned down. Hit on the thigh pad and a bit too leg side.

McManus is forward, defending into the off side.

    Out!

McManus has flicked a leg side ball to Dom Bess - who had just been sent in to leg slip. Coad has 4-40!

    Justin Broad will bat next.

While our focus will be on the games where promotion and relegation are still to be decided, there's still plenty of action elsewhere.

Essex have resumed batting at Chelmsford after Friday's washout. Dean Elgar and Tom Westley are both past fifty with the hosts on 130-1 against champions Surrey.

Play is finally under way between Durham and already-relegated Kent after the first two days were abandoned.

Durham are 28-0 with captain Alex Lees and Ben McKinney at the crease.

In Division Two, Glamorgan have just gone past 300 against Gloucestershire. They're 305-4 with Chris Cooke just reaching a half-century.

  5. Postpublished at 10:56 British Summer Time

    Somerset 136 & 69-5 v Hants 196

James Vince at last closes that gap at third slip that he had most of this innings across yesterday evening and this morning, slip fielders scratching marks of where to stand like chickens in their coop.

James Rew is resolute in defence though, determined to not give a chance.

Yes it was not such a merry return to Old Trafford for Somerset last week, but do not forget these two's mammoth partnership there last season, Somerset need something at least nearly that large from these two to have a chance of winning this game.

  6. Postpublished at 10:56 British Summer Time

    Worcs 139-7 v Lancs

At the moment, no sign of a desperately-needed breakthrough for Lancashire.

Tom Bailey and Anderson Phillip are toiling away but they haven't managed to create any chances as yet and batting looks somewhat easier than it did on day one.

Matthew Waite and Logan van Beek have added 83 for this eighth wicket so far.

  7. Lunch and a 12:00 BST inspection at Hovepublished at 10:55 British Summer Time

    Sussex v Middlesex

More frustration for promotion hopefuls, Middlesex.

The weather is much better at Hove today but the field remains damp and the visiting team will have to wait till this afternoon to even begin trying to close the gap (15 points before this round) on second-place Yorkshire.

  8. Postpublished at 10:50 British Summer Time

    Yorks v Northants 128-6

Lewis McManus plays the ball from Matt Fisher down the ground and Ben Coad runs in from cover to prevent the run.

Fisher pushes the ball out a bit wider and McManus shoulders arms.

    Maiden over.

Bartlett will face Ben Coad now on 46 and leaves a seaming delivery on a tight off stump line on length.

He gets a thick inside edge on a leg side ball, which is picked up on the bounce at leg slip.

A short leg side ball is scooped square for one.

McManus opens the face on the front foot and steers the last ball wide of the slip cordon for four.

  9. Postpublished at 10:47 British Summer Time

    Somerset 136 & 66-5 v Hants 196

Kasey Aldridge could have been out first ball.

James Vince again this morning goes with his ploy of two slips, no third slip but a fourth slip, and yes of course Aldridge edges straight to where third slip could have, should have been.

A 22 ball duck for the tall all-rounder in the first dig, avoiding a final match pair in fortuitous fashion.

Mo Abbas, as ever, probing plenty of problems with cloud cover and a red Dukes in his hand.

  10. 50 runs

50 partnership for Verreynne and Lordpublished at 10:46 British Summer Time

    Notts 336-6 v Warks

Applause from the Trent Bridge crowd as Rob Lord drives Olly Hannon-Dalby off the back foot for a boundary that brings up his 50 partnership with Kyle Verreynne.

Lord has 18, Verreynne 78 and the pair are nudging Notts nearer to what could be another vital bonus point, with another 23 overs before the cut-off stage.

  11. wicket

WICKET Kohler-Cadmore b Abbas 17published at 10:44 British Summer Time

    Somerset 136 & 62-5 v Hants 196

The first wicket of the final Championship Saturday morning of 2024 again comes from Taunton.

Mo Abbas tickles the off stump of Tom Kohler-Cadmore and some of the fielders were not even aware.

The top scorer of the Somerset first innings is still currently the second top scorer of the second, but gone and Somerset into the all-rounders now.

  12. Postpublished at 10:42 British Summer Time

    Yorks v Northants 123-6

We have extended sessions of play today, with lunch taken 10 minutes later than originally scheduled at 12:40.

Lewis McManus is forward to Ben Coad, driving along the ground to mid on.

    Four slips in place.

McManus dabs the fourth ball into cover for a tight single to get off the mark.

Bartlett gets away with a loose play and miss outside off stump to end the over.

Testing over from Coad with well directed nip off the seam.

  13. 50 runs

50 for Matthew Waitepublished at 10:38 British Summer Time

    Worcs 124-7 v Lancs

Matthew Waite (Worcs)Image source, Rex Features

First landmark of the day is a half-century for Matthew Waite as he turns Anderson Phillip for two on the leg side.

It's the fourth time this season the Pears all-rounder has passed 50 and this one has potentially rescued his side's first innings - he and Logan van Beek have more than doubled the Worcestershire total since they joined forces.

  14. Postpublished at 10:37 British Summer Time

    Somerset 136 & 60-4 v Hants 196

James Rew survives Kyle Abbott's first over and Tom Kohler-Cadmore the first from Mohammad Abbas even with Ben Brown breathing down his neck, stood up to him.

The first run comes from the 12th ball this morning, TKC off the back foot to deep cover to change the strike.

  15. Postpublished at 10:37 British Summer Time

    Yorks v Northants 122-6

George Bartlett gets a leg stump half volley to start day three, which he glances safely past leg slip for four.

Single off the fourth ball and Lewis McManus is beaten outside off stump.

Matt Fisher will bowl from the Howard Stand with three slips.

Bartlett leaves outside off stump at first and then drives the fifth ball along the ground to Dom Bess at mid off. Maiden over.

  16. Play begins at Trent Bridgepublished at 10:30 British Summer Time

    Notts 324-6 v Warks

Keep batting, for as long as possible, will be the simple instruction for Nottinghamshire as they resume against Warwickshire.

If Notts can extend their first innings total beyond 350 - and ideally 400 - within the next 27 overs, the bonus points will pile added pressure on Lancashire at New Road.

Two balls to complete Olly Hannon-Dalby's over from last night and both are defended by Rob Lord.

  17. Day Three begins at Headingleypublished at 10:30 British Summer Time

    Yorks v Northants 117-6

This game has moved rapidly in just 40 overs of play, which of course it needed to after an abandonment on Day One.

A batting point for Northants feels a bit remote at this stage, but the visiting team will still harbour hopes of a 200 score if George Bartlett and Lewis McManus can settle in this morning.

Bartlett has 41 and he'll face Ben Coad first up.

Lewis McManus is yet to get off the mark after facing just five deliveries after Fateh Singh was dismissed in the penultimate over last night.

Yorkshire need a third bowling point, a batting point and a draw to be mathematically certain of clinching the second promotion spot.

Anything beyond that is a bonus.

  18. Play in Tauntonpublished at 10:30 British Summer Time

    Somerset 136 & 60-4 v Hants 196

Kyle Abbott has 67 wickets against Somerset in recent years, he bowls the first ball to James Rew two minutes before the allotted start time!

  19. Play begins at New Roadpublished at 10:29 British Summer Time

    Worcs 119-7 v Lancs

Although play begins on time, it's pretty gloomy overhead - and Lancashire's prospects of Division One survival are looking equally bleak.

Somehow, the Red Rose need to wrap up this Worcestershire innings as quickly as possible, then rack up a big total inside 110 overs and leave themselves sufficient time to bowl out the home side for a second time.

And even if they manage that, Lancashire still need events over at Trent Bridge to go in their favour too...
