A whirlwind day for Somerset at Lancashire.

It’s been a glorious day to open up the penultimate round of matches.

And it’s Surrey who will be the happiest in Division One after their solid day against Durham.

It’s been a whirlwind for Somerset at Lancashire and the game there is very much up for grabs.

And in Division Two, Middlesex, Sussex and Yorkshire have all enjoyed decent days.

Lots more excitement to come tomorrow, see you at 10:00 BST.

  3. Close of play at Old Traffordpublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 17 September

    Lancs 140 & 16-1 v Somerset 146

The first part of the day went as title-chasing Somerset might have hoped, if not expected, as Lancashire were bowled out in 39.5 overs.

But what followed was definitely not part of the plan as they only managed a six-run lead on first innings as the wickets continued to tumble at Old Trafford.

Keaton Jennings' 56 was the top score in either first innings, but his departure for four second time around will leave Somerset optimistic that they can force a win from this game and keep up the pressure on leaders Surrey.

    Lancs 140 & 12-1 v Somerset 146

    Big chance!

Will Williams flashes hard and edges Lewis Gregory. It goes between first and second slip at a good height. They left it for each other!

That could have been a huge moment in not just this match but potentially the title race.

    Craig Overton again.

He begins with a yorker, which Will Williams advances at and digs out.

Williams is then rapped on the pads to two balls in a row. The first was going down and the second looked too high - a smirk from umpire Steve O'Shaughnessy followed his head shake.

Harry Singh is then given two balls to face but he survives both as Overton ends the day with 0-5 from six overs.

One last over of the day to be bowled by....Lewis Gregory.

    Lancs 140 & 11-1 v Somerset 146

Some nice shape for Lewis Gregory but nothing to really challenge Will Williams.

A full and straight delivery is as difficult as it gets for Williams.

And the nightwatcher does exactly what his job title is by taking a lazy single into the legside to keep the strike for the penultimate over of the day.

    Lancs 140 & 10-1 v Somerset 146

Craig Overton joins the dots as well.

Harry Singh is forced to play at five of the deliveries, with the last ball sailing well outside his off stump.

    Three to go.

  8. Postpublished at 18:21 British Summer Time 17 September

    Lancs 140 & 10-1 v Somerset 146

A real pressure building over from Lewis Gregory.

Everything was angling in towards the batter and making them have to at least consider playing it - until the final delivery which is short and requires a duck.

    A wicket maiden.

    Four overs left tonight.

That could be a huge wicket in this match.

The bowling change works almost immediately. Lewis Gregory comes on and second ball gets an edge out of Keaton Jennings.

A fairly standard catch at first slip for Andy Umeed.

Will Williams in as nightwatcher. 4.4 overs to go today with Lancashire leading by four runs.

  10. Stumps at Sophia Gardenspublished at 18:10 British Summer Time 17 September

    Glam 12-0 v Yorks 361

Tricky two overs safely negotiated by Sam Northeast and Asa Tribe with the Glamorgan captain hitting Ben Coad for three fours in the first over of the reply.

Yorkshire will be pretty pleased with what is a solid position going into day two as they eye the second promotion place in Division Two.

George Hill and Dom Bess, who put on 102 for the sixth wicket, did plenty of the heavy lifting as Yorkshire secured their three battings points.

Given that they went into this penultimate round of matches with a 15 points lead over third-placed Middlesex, that is a job well done after being put in.

  11. Close of play at The Ovalpublished at 18:09 British Summer Time 17 September

    Surrey 52-0 v Durham 262

Advantage Surrey in the title race.

The won the toss this morning and reduced Durham to 134-5 before a stand of 70.

Colin Ackermann made 78 not out but Dan Worrall finished with 4-39 to see Durham all out after tea.

And in reply Rory Burns has moved very smartly to 40 not out off 46 balls.

  12. Bad light stops playpublished at 18:04 British Summer Time 17 September

    Warks 78 v Essex 189-9

Umpires have called time on proceedings with Essex leading by 111 and with one wicket remaining, Shane Snater unbeaten on 33 and Jamie Porter on 2.

Doesn't look too bad but the shadows have lengthened across the square and 55 overs is all we are going to get at Edgbaston.

Essex in a very strong position after a great day in the field and if anyone stakes a greater claim to man of the match than Snater (5-13 and 33no) it would be a surprise.

    Lancs 140 & 8-0 v Somerset 146

Keaton Jennings square cuts Brett Randell for four and Lancashire lead by two runs. He lets the final ball of the over fly by harmlessly outside off stump. There are eight more to be bowled in the day's play.

  14. Postpublished at 18:02 British Summer Time 17 September

    Lancs 140 & 4-0 v Somerset 146

Survival is the name of the game for Lancashire as the shadows lengthen at Old Trafford.

Two runs for Harry Singh from the first ball of the innings is the only scoring shot in the first three overs - with a no-ball doubling the total.

  15. Close of play at Canterburypublished at 18:00 British Summer Time 17 September

    Kent v Notts 393-6

An exceptional day for Nottinghamshire with the bat, especially Ben Slater.

The opener scored 160 to provide the backbone of the day, with Haseeb Hameed (56) and Jack Hayes (62) the others to stick around.

Kent are facing another innings where they concede 400 in the first innings - it has happened in all but one match this season. They improved as the day went on but they seem behind the eight ball.

  16. Close of play at Bristolpublished at 17:57 British Summer Time 17 September

    Gloucestershire 109 v Sussex 149-4

Batting hasn't been easy for them, but it's job done so far for Division Two leaders Sussex.

Gloucestershire chose to bat after winning the toss, but were then skittled in 43.4 overs - a major come-down from the high of winning the T20 Blast at the weekend.

Jaydev Unadkat (4-32) was the pick of the Sussex attack, well backed up by Ollie Robinson and Tom Clark with three wickets each.

Tom Haines made 40 in reply at the top of Sussex's order and James Coles will start day two on 36 not out, with his side 40 in front.

  17. Close of play at Derbypublished at 17:56 British Summer Time 17 September

    Derbys 173 v Middx 125-1

As good a day as Middlesex could have hoped for.

Having lost the toss, they saw Derbyshire reach 130-2.

But then came a truly extraordinary collapse of 6-3 in 35 balls!

The hosts nudged up to 173 but Middlesex have replied very strongly, with Mark Stoneman 79 not out at the close.

  18. Postpublished at 17:56 British Summer Time 17 September

    Warks 78 v Essex 187-9

Shane Snater is having quite a day with 5-13 with the ball and he is now having a bit of a thrash with the bat.

He is up to 33 with three successive fours off Craig Miles which is a valuable late thrust for the Essex innings.

Perfect reply from Surrey so far.
