A day which began with an emotional tribute to Worcestershire's Josh Baker at Canterbury saw Pears opener Gareth Roderick pay his respects with a superb century, after which he tapped his bat against the number 33 his team will wear on their chest in Baker's honour this season.

There was also a glorious maiden Hampshire century for Ali Orr as his new side took charge at home to Durham and for Miles Hammond for Gloucestershire in Division Two, while Lancashire skipper Keaton Jennings fell narrowly short against Notts and Ed Barnard is unbeaten on 96 overnight as Warwickshire battled back against Surrey at The Oval.

We'll be back to bring you all the action on what is set to be a glorious second day, do join us from 10.45 BST tomorrow.

Sussex are ending the day with their tails up.

It really has swung back and fourth during the course of the day.

  4. Close of play at Sophia Gardenspublished at 18:46 British Summer Time 10 May

    Glamorgan 21-1 v Sussex 278

Glamorgan take maximum bowling points on day one after bowling Sussex out for 278.

Mir Hamza and James Harris took four wickets each as the hosts made hay in the Cardiff sunshine.

A few Sussex batters got a start but were unable to translate them into meaningful scores, Fynn Hudson-Prentice the closest to a half-century with 48, but they needed the tail to wag and luckily for Sussex it did to make the score look more respectable.

They got a late boost too by taking a Glamorgan wicket before the close to set things up nicely for day two.

  5. Stumps at Nottinghampublished at 18:35 British Summer Time 10 May

    Notts v Lancs 306-8

Notts finish day one on the front foot after swinging momentum back their way, making major inroads when the new ball became available.

Dillon Pennington in particular enjoyed himself in the latter part of the day, taking three wickets as the visitors lost four batters for just 32 runs.

Lancashire did look in a decent position before that on 196-4 but need to regroup in the morning.

  6. wicket

WICKET: Byrom lbw Karvelas 12published at 18:32 British Summer Time 10 May

    Glamorgan 18-1 v Sussex 278

Sussex get a wicket before the close!

Glamorgan made a good start, taking 13 from the first over, with Eddie Byrom helping himself to a six.

But he's out in the second over after being trapped lbw by Ari Karvelas.

  7. Close of play at The Ovalpublished at 18:31 British Summer Time 10 May

    Surrey v Warwickshire 318-8

14 runs off the final over of the day and Warwickshire have come back from the brink to arguably edge the first day, having been put in by the hosts.

Jordan Clark picked up 4-50 as wickets fell at regular intervals, 59 remains the biggest partnership of the innings, but Ed Barnard stood firm.

The only batter to pass 40 will go to bed tonight unbeaten on 96 while Craig Miles has 20* at the other end.

If they can find the 32 runs required for a third batting bonus point in the morning then they'll be mightily pleased with their work.

  8. Stumps at Southamptonpublished at 18:29 British Summer Time 10 May

    Hampshire 336-4 v Durham

Ali Orr's 126 and Tom Prest's unbeaten 65 mean Hampshire have enjoyed the better of day one against Durham.

They look well set for the morning with Liam Dawson also at the crease on 33.

Callum Parkinson was the pick of Durham's bowlers with 3-110.

  9. Close of play at Northamptonpublished at 18:28 British Summer Time 10 May

    Northants v Glos 338-8

A wonderful century from Miles Hammond has helped Gloucestershire into a good position at the end of day one.

Opener Cameron Bancroft struck a half-century before Graeme van Buuren fell four runs short of a 50 of his own.

Siddarth Kaul was brilliant for Northants on his debut, taking 4-58 from 23 overs.

  10. Close of play at Canterburypublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 10 May

    Kent v Worcestershire 308-5

On an emotional day for Worcestershire, the visitors have enjoyed the best of the opening day, though Kent were rewarded for their toil with a couple of late wickets.

The toss looked crucial and for the fifth straight time, Kent skipper Daniel Bell-Drummond came out on the wrong side of it.

Though Jake Libby departed early, his opening partner Gareth Roderick amassed a superb 117 and shared century stands with Kashif Ali (72) and Adam Hose, who remains unbeaten on 50 overnight.

It was fitting that in the moment of the day, Roderick raised his helmet and tapped the 33 on his chest, the number worn by teammate Josh Baker who passed away earlier this month.

The day began with an off-field tribute to Baker and Roderick's contribution was a fitting tribute on the field too.

  11. wicket

WICKET: Bruce lbw Paterson 73published at 18:27 British Summer Time 10 May

    Notts v Lancs 305-8

Another Lancashire wicket goes down just before the close.

Tom Bruce has batted well for his 73 but he can't quite see out the day as Dane Paterson has him plumb lbw in the penultimate over.

What a session it's been for Notts.

Just before Bruce left Lancs picked up a second batting point.

  12. Division Two updatepublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 10 May

Glamorgan will have six overs to negotiate this evening in response to Sussex's 278 all out.

It's fair to say Siddarth Kaul has impressed on his Northants debut today. He's just taken a fourth wicket, that of Gloucestershire's Zafar Gohar.

The visitors are eyeing a third batting point on 335-8 as we approach the close.

  13. 50 runs

50 for Adam Hosepublished at 18:22 British Summer Time 10 May

    Kent v Worcestershire 308-5

Though the wickets have arrived late-on, Adam Hose had put a dampener on Kent's enthusiasm this evening as he has amassed his eighth half-century in First Class cricket and his first of the season.

It seems he's been in the 40s for an hour but he eventually got to the milestone from 92 balls with seven fours.

  14. 300 up for Warwickshirepublished at 18:21 British Summer Time 10 May

    Surrey v Warwickshire 303-8

Against the odds, that's a second batting bonus point for the visitors in the lengthening shadows with a glorious shot from Craig Miles for four to move onto 13.

Just two overs to come, Ed Barnard is unbeaten on 88.

  15. wicket

WICKET: Leach lbw b Evison 1published at 18:18 British Summer Time 10 May

    Kent v Worcestershire 307-5

Another for Joey Evison as the shadows lengthen. Tries to play across the line down the leg side and misses the ball. Up goes the finger.

Rob Jones is the new batter. Some late reward for Kent on the opening day. One over to come.

  16. 'A pretty entertaining day'published at 18:13 British Summer Time 10 May

    Northants v Glos 333-7

    Ed Seabourne
    BBC Radio Bristol

It's been a pretty entertaining day.

It's moved at a decent pace with a steady flow of wickets, never a cascade by any means but runs have been scored at a good rate too.

  17. SUSSEX ALL OUT FOR 278published at 18:13 British Summer Time 10 May

    Glamorgan v Sussex 278

Glamorgan finally take the final Sussex wicket after a brave resistance from the tailenders who put on 43 together.

Ari Karvelas scored 39 from 70 balls and Jayden Seales 17 from 38.

How important might those runs prove to be?

It had looked like Glamorgan would restrict the visitors to a far smaller total when they were on 140-7 so Sussex will be fairly pleased to get as many as they have.

  18. 50 runs

50 for Tom Prestpublished at 18:07 British Summer Time 10 May

    Hampshire 322-4 v Durham

A second half-century of the campaign for Hampshire's Tom Prest.

He's hit eight fours and two sixes to get there.

  19. wicket

WICKET: Roderick b Evison 117published at 18:06 British Summer Time 10 May

    Kent v Worcestershire 305-4

Gareth Roderick's superb innings is brought to an end as he topples across his crease and sees his off-stump sent cartwheeling by Joey Evison.

Joe Leach heads out to join Adam Hose in the middle with 21 balls left on the slate tonight.

  20. wicket

WICKET: Hartley c Harrison b Pennington 6published at 18:00 British Summer Time 10 May

    Notts v Lancs 294-7

The new ball continues to work wonders for Notts and in particular Dillon Pennington who not that long ago had no wickets and now he has three.

Pennington goes round the wicket to Tom Hartley who edges to Calvin Harrison at second slip.

What a great spell from the bowler and what valuable quick wickets these could prove to be.
