So stumps are drawn on another action-packed day of County Championship cricket.

In the battle of the top two in Division One, Nottinghamshire have Sussex right where they want them after bowling them out for 169 and nearly clearing the deficit by the close on 164-3.

Brett Hutton and Josh Tongue, with best figures for Notts of 5-44, took nine of the 10 wickets to fall before Haseeb Hameed led the home charge with another fine half-century. He's scored 205 runs since he was last dismissed. He's in some touch.

Elsewhere, Jordan Clark took 5-68 as champions Surrey bowled Somerset out for 283 in the final over of the day.

Tom Lammonby's 76 was the mainstay of the Somerset innings, with Lewis Gregory's half-century getting the visitors to 250 and a first batting point.

At New Road, debutant loanee Jake Ball weighed in with five wickets as Durham shot bottom club Worcestershire out for 162.

New signing Henry Nicholls made 42 on his Pears debut before the home side fought back pinning Durham back to 55-4.

Time for a breather, but we'll be back for day two tomorrow from 10:40 BST. Join us then.

  3. Close of play at the Oval as Somerset all out for 283published at 18:52 British Summer Time 25 April

    Surrey v Somerset 283

Out! A dramatic end to Day One.

Lewis Gregory swings and pops up a catch to Ryan Patel on the leg side!

Jordan Clark picks up 5-68 off 24.1 overs.

283 is a worthy recovery from 187-7 and may well be an above par score given the movement and occasional uneven bounce we have seen this afternoon and this evening.

Brilliant counter attack from Lewis Gregory, who made a valuable 62 off 87 balls with three sixes and five fours.

Don't forget the valuable runs of Archie Vaughan (36) and Tom Lammonby (76) at the top of the order either.

Sean Dickson battles through the pain in his right index finger for the last four overs of the innings after retiring hurt this morning.

An absolutely thrilling final hour of play comes to an end and it's really very hard to say for sure who holds the advantage.

  4. Close of play at Bristolpublished at 18:49 British Summer Time 25 April

    Gloucestershire 252 v Leicestershire 91-4

Ben Green claimed five wickets as Leicestershire eventually polished-off Gloucestershire for 252, though James Bracey's fine unbeaten 93 stymied them after the hosts were reduced to 88-7 at one stage.

The Division Two leaders were reeling at 38-4 in reply but Lewis Hill (38*) and Ian Holland have seen them through to stumps without further alarm and will be back tomorrow to chip away at that 161-run lead.

  5. Postpublished at 18:46 British Summer Time 25 April

    Surrey v Somerset 283-9

A short ball is pulled leg side by Lewis Gregory for four more. He gets his third six off the next ball, swinging hard and high over long on.

Amazing counter attack. A swing and a miss next ball and an overthrow to attempt a run out of Sean Dickson (halfway down the track) after a block to leg affords him a single to keep the strike with one over left tonight.

That throw nearly took out the umpire at head height and Umpire Rob Bailey hits the turf.

  6. Division Two updatepublished at 18:43 British Summer Time 25 April

    #bbccricket

    Gloucestershire 252 v Leicestershire 90-4

Lewis Hill has steadied the Leicestershire ship since coming into the crease as he eyes a half-century with 38 runs off 73 balls.

This partnership between Hill and Ian Holland (10*) is worth 53 and the pair will aim to see out the final two overs and will have three figures in their sights tomorrow morning.

  7. 50 runs

50 for Lewis Gregorypublished at 18:42 British Summer Time 25 April

    Surrey v Somerset 272-9

Gus Atkinson is on and makes a mess of a bouncer which goes wide of leg stump and the bowler keels over!

    Four wides. Very loose ball.

Sean Dickson survives an LBW shout and runs a leg bye.

Lewis Gregory completes an 82 ball 50 with two runs jabbed to leg off a short ball.

    Four fours and two sixes.

  8. 6 runs

Gregory goes for goldpublished at 18:38 British Summer Time 25 April

    Surrey v Somerset 264-9

The field spreads for Lewis Gregory, who drives and misses the first ball from Jordan Clark and lifts the second over square leg for six!

That's out of the ground. Great pick up shot.

Two more runs next ball driven into the off side and six more thumped over mid wicket.

The field comes in now and Gregory ducks a bouncer.

Sean Dickson will face Gus Atkinson. Two overs left.

  9. Close of play at Derbypublished at 18:35 British Summer Time 25 April

    Derbyshire 267-5 v Middlesex

David Lloyd's 93, 73 from Harry Came and 49 from Wayne Madsen have set Derbyshire on the hunt for more batting points in the morning, despite a good comeback with the ball from Middlesex on the first afternoon in Division Two.

  10. Postpublished at 18:34 British Summer Time 25 April

    Surrey v Somerset 250-9

Great take from Ben Foakes. That ball was well wide of leg stump.

Sean Dickson blocks out the rest of the Dan Lawrence over, taking one hand off the bat as he does so.

This is very painful for him to play and for spectators to watch.

Jordan Clark will bowl to Lewis Gregory.

  11. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:32 British Summer Time 25 April

    Leach c Foakes b Lawrence 0 (Surrey v Somerset 250-9)

Lewis Gregory turns Dan Lawrence into the leg side and that single takes Somerset to 250 and a batting point in the 93rd over.

That's the first Somerset batting point since the season opener against the Pears at Taunton.

But now Jack Leach is out, caught by Ben Foakes down the leg side off the bowling of Dan Lawrence.

Sean Dickson is indeed going to bat. Brave decision after the injury to his index finger on his right hand this morning.

  12. Close of play at New Roadpublished at 18:29 British Summer Time 25 April

    Worcestershire 162 v Durham 55-4

Fireworks in short supply but a compelling first day of county cricket at New Road this year.

Just the 217 runs scored but 14 wickets fell across 96 overs.

After winning the toss, Jake Ball took 5-47 on debut for Durham following his 14-day loan from Somerset yesterday, in part to make up for the absence of Matty Potts at the request of the England camp.

Henry Nicholls, the Kiwi Test batter on debut for Worcestershire made a painstaking 42 but Durham opener Ben McKinney (24 from 19 balls) was the only other player to show any real class at the crease on a slow track with inconsistent bounce and a very slow outfield.

The visitors will resume in the morning with Will Rhodes unbeaten on 17 from 65 balls with nightwatcher Jack Blatherwick on two from 21.

  13. Close of play at Trent Bridgepublished at 18:29 British Summer Time 25 April

    Nottinghamshire 164-3 v Sussex 169

Pretty much the perfect day for Notts skipper Haseeb Hameed.

After winning a good toss he watched Brett Hutton (4-53) and Josh Tongue's rockets rip through the Sussex innings.

Tongue was superb, picking up his second five-wicket haul of the season and his best figures for Notts as the visitors could only muster 169.

Hameed then led from the front as he compiled another handsome half-century, calmly steering his side to near parity with the help of a confident unbeaten 34 from Jack Haynes.

Ollie Robinson was head and shoulders above the rest of the Sussex attack - he looks like he getting back to his best - and that will give the visitors hope they can get back into this.

But the deficit is as good as wiped out. Notts have a great platform to construct a sizable first-innings advantage on day two.

  14. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:28 British Summer Time 25 April

    Davey LBW b Clark 29 (Surrey v Somerset 249-8)

A rare leg side ball from Jordan Clark is clipped behind square from the crease by Josh Davey for four.

Lovely shot with a neat flourish of the bat.

Davey gets four more with a glance through square leg.

Out! He's missed with a forward defensive and been pinned LBW in front of off stump.

Jack Leach will bat next and may well be last in given the injury to Sean Dickson.

    Gloucestershire 252 v Leicestershire 79-4

    Nicole Harvey
    BBC Radio cricket commentator

The weather today has been a little bit of everything.

We've had sunshine and cloud, thankfully we've had no rain, but that looks like it might set in tomorrow.

  16. Postpublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 25 April

    Surrey v Somerset 241-7

Dan Lawrence is coming back on to bowl some off spin with six overs remaining tonight - if of course light allows.

We should be OK in this hazy sunshine.

Lewis Gregory is carefully forward to defend.

The fifth ball turns and passes leg stump and keeper Ben Foakes collects it comfortably.

The sixth ball is short and pulled past a short fine leg for four.

  17. Division Two updatepublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 25 April

    #bbccricket

    Gloucestershire 252 v Leicestershire 78-4

The visitors are pushing towards three figures as Lewis Hill has knocked 34 runs from 55 balls to put his side into a better position.

With just over seven overs remaining, they'll be aiming to avoid any more losses going into the second day.

    Derbyshire 259-5 v Middlesex

The hosts surpass 250 runs to get that bonus batting point secured as they look to see out the rest of the day without loss.

  18. Postpublished at 18:22 British Summer Time 25 April

    Nottinghamshire 158-3 v Sussex 169

Notts understandably putting up the shutters as the spinners operate from both ends.

Jack Haynes plays out a maiden.

He and his skipper Haseeb Hameed eyeing a good night's sleep and two red-inkers overnight.

    Last over

  19. Postpublished at 18:20 British Summer Time 25 April

    Surrey v Somerset 237-7

We have a bowling change as Jordan Clark comes on in place of Gus Atkinson at the Pavilion End.

He's bowled superbly today, with relentless accuracy and movement.

He gets a ball to keep low on Lewis Gregory, who digs the ball out safely even so.

He takes one hand off the bat as he plays and misses with a flashing drive at the third ball.

That beat him on the inside edge and kept low. Hmm. What would be a par score on this pitch now?

Gregory gets a single to leg and Josh Davey nudges a couple more runs to deep third.

That's the 50 partnership for this eighth-wicket pair off 86 balls.

  20. Postpublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 25 April

    Surrey v Somerset 234-7

Lewis Gregory leaves Dan Worrall outside off stump and then strokes the third ball through backward point for one.

Josh Davey is beaten outside off but survives the over.

    Seven overs left tonight.
