Despite three teams being bowled out on the opening day of a new round of County Championship matches, there have been some eye-catching innings by talented young players.

Freddie McCann's 138 enabled Notts to reach 333 all out against Hampshire and Jack Carson's 102 for Sussex enabled them to total 284 after being 88-6 against Worcestershire.

Asa Tribe made 94 and Ben Kellaway is 91 not out for Glamorgan against Kent, while the more experienced Tom Latham hit a masterly unbeaten 139 against champions Surrey at Edgbaston.

It bounces over cover and that will be the 50 up for Harris. It has been a magnificent innings so far from the Australian.

It's definitely not done just yet. He brings up 53 from 119 balls and that closes out an expensive over.

  4. Close of play at Northamptonpublished at 18:59 British Summer Time 9 May

    Northants 238 v Lancs 133-3

Matty Hurst plays out the final over the day from Ben Sanderson and Lancashire will feel they end it on top, trailing by 105 with seven wickets standing.

Northamptonshire fought back superbly from 67-6 with the bat to post 238 - but the visitors have regained the advantage through this unbroken stand of 74 between Hurst (31) and Marcus Harris (53).

Marcus Harris reaches his half-century from 119 balls, hitting the third of three off-side boundaries in that Calvin Harrison over.

It's the sixth time in his nine innings for Lancashire that he's passed 50 - and two of those went on to become big hundreds.

    One over left tonight.

  6. Postpublished at 18:48 British Summer Time 9 May

    Northants 238 v Lancs 119-3

Ben Sanderson is back on for a final burst this evening and he finds some movement, beating Marcus Harris on both inside and outside edges.

Harris remains obdurate, though, unbeaten on 41 while Matty Hurst has 29.

    Three overs to go tonight.

Sussex's Jack Carson celebrates his maiden century

A topsy turvy day which saw Sussex start and finish brilliantly and Worcs swarm all over them in the middle. And a day which Jack Carson will not forget in a hurry.

Coming to the crease at 88-6 after Tom Taylor had blitzed Sussex's top order with 5-5 in 33 balls leaving them listing badly at 88-6, Carson cut loose.

His 102 helped the hosts add 194 for the last four wickets and slump Worcs shoulders on a beautiful day on the south coast.

Sussex's 284 all out is not yet a winning score on a pitch with runs in it but it is a lot closer for Carson's efforts.

Taylor, who finished with 5-56, was the pick of Worcs' attack but Ben Allison also bowled well without as much reward for his 2-67. Worcs resume tomorrow on 7-0 with all still to play for in this contest.

  8. 'What an innings from Carson'published at 18:45 British Summer Time 9 May

    Sussex 284 v Worcs

    Dave Bradley

    What an innings from Carson.

A nice bit of sportsmanship being shown there. The Worcestershire players are giving him a pat on the back and shaking his hand.

  9. 50 runs

50 partnership for Harris and Hurstpublished at 18:40 British Summer Time 9 May

    Northants 238 v Lancs 110-3

Marcus Harris steers Luke Procter wide of the slips for four and that raises the first 50 partnership of this Lancashire innings with Matty Hurst.

Finally, Northamptonshire are going to employ some spin in the form of Calvin Harrison - which they should arguably have done sooner as their over-rate has been sluggish to say the least.

  10. Close of play at Trent Bridgepublished at 18:39 British Summer Time 9 May

    Notts 333 v Hants 2-0

    Nottinghamshire batsman Freddie McCann

A glimpse of a very bright future at Trent Bridge as Freddie McCann dominates proceedings, dragging Notts from a wholly unpromising position to one of strength at the close.

Entering the fray at 62-1 after Notts had somehow, luckily weathered an early storm with the new ball from Hants, McCann, still just 20, proceeded to post his third first-class century in only his 10th first-class outing.

McCann had some support as he dragged Notts to a second batting bonus point with a trio of 33s from Kyle Verreynne, Lyndon James and Liam Patterson-White.

In keeping with the threes Notts finished on 333.

For Hants, Kyle Abbott was the pick posting 5-57 but he could have had plenty more, bowling superbly in the morning and afternoon sessions, and again with the second new ball.

Hants will wonder how they have let this one slip but let's see where we are after an innings apiece on a wicket that looks to have plenty in it for everyone.

  11. Close of play at Canterburypublished at 18:33 British Summer Time 9 May

    Kent v Glamorgan 389-7

A little lift - as opposed to The Mikado's little list - for Kent as Geoge Garrett has Timm van der Gugten lbw for 17 with the final ball of the opening day's play at the Spitfire Ground.

After opener Asa Tribe fell for 94, bowled by Matt Parkinson's googly, Ben Kellaway will have a chance to register a maiden first-class hundred on day two, having made 91 not out so far.

Colin Ingram weighed in with 70 and was unhappy to be given out caught behind down the leg side, he felt the ball brushed his hip.

But Ingram was a victim of pace bowler Kashif Ali, who led the Kent attack with vigour and enthusiam to return 4-75 from 18 overs.

  12. 100 runs

100 up for Lancashirepublished at 18:32 British Summer Time 9 May

    Northants 238 v Lancs 102-3

Marcus Harris drills Luke Procter to the rope at long-on to move the Lancashire total into three figures in reply to that Northants first-innings total of 238.

The left-hander has advanced to 34, with Matty Hurst on 19 and the visitors will feel they're back on top in this game if they can get through to the close without further losses.

  13. Close of play at Edgbastonpublished at 18:28 British Summer Time 9 May

    Warwickshire 364-4 v Surrey

Spinner Dan Lawrence bowls the final over - his 24th - of a tough day for reigning champions Surrey at Edgbaston.

Tom Latham meets the final delivery with a solid defensive bat and ends on 139 not out, with a six and 14 fours - quite a way to mark your first innings for a new club.

Having put on 112 with Rob Yates (86), he has now added 83 with Ed Barnard, who will resume alongside him tomorrow on 38.

Not a lot of help from the pitch for Surrey, but Lawrence did produce one gem to bowl Beau Webster through the gate for 15.

  14. Close of play at Chelmsfordpublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 9 May

    Essex 27-3 v Yorks 216

A very testing period for Essex, but Tom Westley and Robin Das make it through to stumps on 10 and four respectively.

Yorkshire will be buoyed by the performance of their bowlers, with Ben Coad and Jack White both keeping it extremely tight before George Hill weighed in with those two wickets.

It might even have been three for Hill, who sent the penultimate ball of the day rearing just over the off stump of Das and finished by zipping one fractionally past the outside edge.

NOTTS 333 ALL OUTpublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 9 May

    McCann c Middleton b Fuller 138 (Notts 333 all out v Hants)

Short and widish and Freddie McCann does not move his feet, reaching to cut in the air to deep backward point where Fletcha Middleton takes the catch.

The 20-year-old looks frustrated with that but he shouldn't be as his 138 – a very classy knock with few chances offered – has dragged Notts to what seems a very competitive total.

It was his third first class hundred in only his 10th first class match (one of those was for England Lions).

Hants will scratch their heads at a total that should have been out of reach but with a few chances going down and precious little luck they find themselves on the backfoot.

  16. wicket

SUSSEX 284 ALL OUTpublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 9 May

Carson b Waite 102 (Sussex 284 all out v Worcs)

A swing and an inside edge dragged on to his stumps ends Jack Carson's excellent innings and with it Sussex's first knock.

HIs 102 (in 138 balls) stood in stark contrast to much of the rest of proceedings on an entertaining day.

And Sussex have him to thank for a rescue mission from 88-6 to 284 all out.

  17. Postpublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 9 May

    Kent v Glamorgan 381-6

From a Glamorgan perspective, Timm van der Gugten is looking reassuringly settled at the Spitfire Ground.

A straight drive for four off George Garrett is followed by another, nudged down to third man from the bowling of Kashif Ali.

He is 11 not out and Ben Kellaway has 89.

    Porter b Hill 0 (Essex 23-3 v Yorkshire 216)

George Hill, YorkshireImage source, Rex Features

Just as Essex stifled the Yorkshire innings earlier, the visitors are repaying them in kind!

No runs scored usually leads to wickets - and that's exactly what happens as George Hill gets one to career back and take Jamie Porter's off stump.

Essex in real trouble as Robin Das emerges to join Tom Westley.

  19. Postpublished at 18:12 British Summer Time 9 May

    Essex 23-2 v Yorks 216

It's all about survival for Essex in these closing overs while Yorkshire, if they can prise out another wicket, will feel the opening day might have tilted in their favour.

No runs have been scored in the 21 deliveries since Dean Elgar's departure and Jack White, operating with three slips and a silly mid-off, has induced a play and miss from Tom Westley with one that kept low.

  20. Postpublished at 91 overs

    Warks 356-4 v Surrey

    Ed BarnardImage source, Rex Features

Too much room outside off stump for Ed Barnard, who stands tall and punches it down to third man for four off Matthew Fisher.

The all-rounder is 33 not out and there are five overs left in the day's play.
