Daniel Hughes stands tall and whips a late cut past gully to bring up the half century partnership for the hosts off the bowling of Ben Gibbon.

Not the greatest of starts for the visitors who won the toss and put Sussex in and have seen them motor to 50 off 86 balls.

  2. 50 runs

50 up for Yorkshirepublished at 12:04 British Summer Time 9 May

    Essex v Yorks 51-0

Fin Bean brings up the Yorkshire 50, although it's a far from convincing stroke to get there as he squirts Kasun Rajitha off an inside edge and just past leg stump for four.

It must be said, though, that's been about the first glimmer of an chance for Essex so far this morning. Bean has 27 to Adam Lyth's 23.

  3. 50 up for Warwickshirepublished at 15.1 overs

    Warks 50-0 v Surrey

Rob Yates tries to tickle Dan Lawrence round the corner at the start of a new over and makes no contact, but a leg bye carried Warwickshire's total to 50.

They will be very content with this start after being put in by the 2022, 2023 and 2024 champions.

    Notts 36-0 v Hants

Hampshire's bowlers will be feeling a little like Arsenal against Paris St-Germain here after an opening spell when they have done everything but take a wicket.

Haseeb Hameed (18) edged the first ball short of the slips and has just managed to keep his edges down but Ben Slater (14) has given two big chances which Hants should have taken.

All in all, they will wondering how, having put Notts into bat, they have not made the best of what was clearly an accurate reading of the pitch.

Kyle Abbott, Brad Wheal and James Fuller are wicketless but could have had at least one each.

    Dan LawrenceImage source, Rex Features

"A thing of beauty is a joy forever" according to that renowned cricket pundit Mr Willy Wonka.

Not even Dan Lawrence's biggest booster could describe his strange, whirling action as 'a thing of beauty' but his spin has been an effective extra weapon for Surrey since he moved from Essex.

Just a couple of singles from his opening over at Edgbaston.

  6. Postpublished at 13 overs

    Warks 45-0 v Surrey

We have observed Tom Lawes improving season on season for Surrey so it is a little surprising that this is his first Championship game of the summer - but then again, maybe not, given the depth of Surrey's seam bowling resources.

There is a hint of away swing for the 22-year-old and although Rob Yates and Alex Davies each attempt a cover drive in his second over, they can't pierce the field and only a leg bye is added to the total.

  7. wicket

    Sales c Jennings b Phillip 8 (Northants 42-3 v Lancs)

Anderson Phillip is on and takes a wicket with his third ball.

Phillip has just been punched through the covers for four by James Sales, but the Trinidadian paceman has the final word, getting one to leave Sales and take the edge.

Lancashire captain Keaton Jennings scoops up the catch and the visitors have secured their first bonus point of the game already.

Rob Keogh is next in for Northamptonshire.

  8. dropped catch

Slater dropped on 9published at 11:50 British Summer Time 9 May

    Notts 23-0 v Hants

And Ben Slater gets a second life!

The Notts opener was spilled at second slip by Toby Albert on 1 and now he has given another similarly grabbable offering to first slip on 9 with the same result.

Tom Prest is the guilty party this time and he gets a consoling pat on the shoulder from a teammate as he re-runs it in his mind.

    Essex v Yorks 35-0

Death and taxes are viewed as inevitable, but you can also add Simon Harmer embarking on a marathon stint of bowling at Chelmsford to that list.

The Essex spinner is on already in the 12th over as the home side seek a breakthrough, but Adam Lyth takes a bold approach, advancing down the track to slam his second delivery over mid-off for four.

Harmer finds some turn with his final delivery, though and that will raise Essex interest.

  10. 'Notts up against good bowling'published at 11:44 British Summer Time 9 May

    Notts 22-0 v Hants

    Dave Bracegirdle
    BBC Radio Nottingham commentator

Notts are riding their luck a little bit, they're up against some really good bowling. This is terrific stuff we're watching at the moment.

Hampshire just maybe at the back of their minds are thinking, there's 38 minutes of cricket gone and nothing to show for it. However, there are only 22 runs on the board.

They're doing their best, but there's nothing going their way at the moment.

  11. Postpublished at 11:43 British Summer Time 9 May

    Sussex 38-0 v Worcs

Too loose, too wide, too short and three consecutive fours off the bat of Daniel Hughes from Ben Gibbon.

Hughes pounced on those, two backfoot punches sandwiching a more respectful cover drive and a dozen off the over as Sussex continue this great start.

  12. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:40 British Summer Time 9 May

    Bartlett c Harris b Balderson 7 (Northants 33-2 v Lancs)

George Bartlett is not a happy man.

The Northamptonshire batter appeared to get his pad in the way of that George Balderson delivery before the ball sailed into the hands of third slip.

Bartlett had turned away to prepare himself for the next ball before realising the umpire's finger had been raised and his reaction indicates he certainly didn't think there was an inside edge.

But it's in the scorebook now and Bartlett trudges back to the dressing room, to be replaced by James Sales.

    ul-Hassan c Muyeye b Ali 16 (Kent v Glamorgan 34-1)

    Kashif AliImage source, Rex

First bowling change by Kent as Kashif Ali takes over from Grant Stewart, whose initial four-over spell yielded only five runs.

It's an inspired decision by Daniel Bell-Drummond as Zain ul-Hassan pushes forward to Ali's fourth delivery and gives a straightforward catch to Tawenda Muyeye at first slip.

  14. Postpublished at 11:38 British Summer Time 9 May

    Northants 29-1 v Lancs

Ricardo Vasconcelos is enjoying himself out there - so far he's collected 25 of the home side's runs this morning.

The left-hander has just struck Will Williams for successive fours, creaming a half-volley down the ground and then hooking the next ball across the rope at long leg.

George Bartlett is content to play second fiddle for now, with three to his name.

  15. Postpublished at 11:36 British Summer Time 9 May

    Notts 20-0 v Hants

Looks to be a bit of bounce and life in this pitch and it has been a testing first half hour for the Notts opening pair against the new ball.

A few edges are keeping the slips interested and Ben Slater has already been given one life on 1 off Kyle Abbott when Toby Albert fumbled at second slip.

  16. Postpublished at 11:34 British Summer Time 9 May

    Warks 35-0 v Surrey

Little sign of any movement or swing for Surrey's new-ball pair.

The runs continue to flow as Rob Yates flicks Nathan Smith for four to mid-wicket.

The Kiwi, though, does seem to be generating a healthy bit of zip off the surface and Yates can only defend the final three balls of his fourth over.

  17. Postpublished at 11:31 British Summer Time 9 May

    Essex v Yorks 23-0

Yorkshire are scoring a little more freely now, with Fin Bean crashing his first boundary through the covers off Jamie Porter.

Bean has almost caught up opening partner Adam Lyth now, with 11 runs to his 12.

Meanwhile, Essex - already beset by injuries to Jordan Cox and Paul Walter - have a substitute fielder on, Luc Benkenstein deputising for Noah Thain, who has injured his hand.

  18. Postpublished at 11:30 British Summer Time 9 May

    Sussex 22-0 v Worcs

Pretty decent start after being put in for Sussex's opening pair with the odd ball beating the edge but no real chances offered.

Tom Haines (19 from 23 ball) is batting like a man in form as well he might given his 513 runs in four matches to date this season.

Daniel Hughes (2 from 19) is acting the junior partner at the moment. Seven overs in.

    Wow.

Jordan Clark is short again and Alex Davies has plenty of time to hoist it into the seating at mid-wicket - his second six in successive overs from the Surrey all-rounder.

  20. Postpublished at 6 overs

    Kent v Glamorgan 27-0

Two fours in the same over for Zain ul-Hassan.

George Garrett overpitches and is driven away through extra cover.

When he tries to find a better length. he is a fraction short and ul-Hassan is able to crack it past point off the back foot.

The left-hander is 16 not out.
