Based on the tournament they've had so far Afghanistan are just ahead because they haven't lost a wicket.

That last over of the powerplay can really swing the momentum, perhaps that is the over this opening pair look to target.

Probably shorter than Mustafizur intended and Gurbaz helps himself to four easy runs.

That's a bit more like it, Gurbaz gets in line and pulls Mustafizur's delivery on its way to the fine-leg boundary.

This is what Afghanistan's openers do, they weather the storm early on.

Afghanistan are not really going anywhere at the moment.

  6. Afg 23-0published at 5 overs

The Afghanistan openers take just a couple of singles from the over - we've had just the one boundary off the bat from this powerplay.

Not the start we expected from these two.

That could be huge. Hridoy has normally got such a good pair of hands, he's electric in the field.

That could have been the in Bangladesh were looking for.

    In and out!

A little surprisingly, Bangladesh turn to spin with Shakib al Hasan, and the veteran all-rounder sees Zadran put down from this third delivery.

It's a very sharp chance, driven hard at Hridoy at a short-ish cover.

The Afghanistan opener survives on 9 - can he take advantage?

The players who have got themselves in trouble are those who have tried to hit themselves out of trouble.

Players who have been patient, found gaps and run hard have been successful. It gets easier the longer you get into your innings.

  10. Afg 21-0published at 4 overs

This is pitch really seems to have something in it for the seamers, and Bangladesh may be disappointed they're yet to be rewarded with a wicket.

Taskin draws a huge flail from Gurbaz, before jagging a ball past the opener's chest later in the over.

  11. Afg 16-0published at 3 overs

Unless you're Australian I don't think there's anything wrong with backing the underdog, Piers!

Better second half of the over from Tanzim, only a single coming from the last three balls.

Piers: I'm backing Afghanistan to win and knock the Aussies out, is that wrong?

That is what Zadran has been searching for the whole innings so far.

Handsome shot through the off side and that might easy some little nerves and early jitters.

  14. Afg 15-0published at 2.3 overs

Some better fortune for Afghanistan in the early stages of the third over - a miss-field at third allows them to take two, before a Tanzim bouncer misses everyone and flies away for four - perhaps surprisingly given as byes.

Zadran then picks up the first boundary off the bat, driving through a gap in the covers.

I really like this match up to Gurbaz with Taskin tending to track the ball away from him.

You see a lack of foot movement often and Gurbaz wants to feel bat on ball so a good match-up for Bangladesh.

The ball is doing all sorts. It's difficult batting out there.

  17. Afg 5-0published at 2 overs

Some very handy carry for Taskin Ahmed as he too draws plays-and-misses from the Afghanistan openers.

Litton Das collects at chest height a fair way behind the stumps, before the final delivery of the over surprisingly keeps low and pings the keeper's boot, allowing Zadran to run a bye.

That's just the second run of the over, a great start for Bangladesh.

As much as Afghanistan's openers are patient, they want to dominate the bowlers and be in charge of what's happening out there.

  19. How's stat?!published at 01:39 British Summer Time 25 June

Bangladesh might not want to bowl spin at these two - in T20 cricket, Ramanullah Gurbaz averages 54 against off-spin and Ibraham Zadran scores at 67. Pace all the way!

Afghanistan are riding high, riding the wave and they've got a blueprint that has worked for them so no surprise whatsoever that they've come in unchanged.
