    Asa TribeImage source, Rex Features

Two young batsmen caught the eye as the County Championship returned, with Glamorgan's Asa Tribe and Ben McKinney of Durham making opening-day centuries for their sides - a career-best 181 not out in Tribe's case.

Division One leaders Surrey were bowled out for 246 before hitting back with the ball against Warwickshire, but things went to plan for rivals Nottinghamshire who cleaned up Worcestershire for 182 despite a lengthy rain interruption.

In the second tier, Leicestershire collected two of the 21 points they need to secure promotion but did not have things their own way against Gloucestershire, for whom Graeme van Buuren made 101.

  3. Close of play at New Roadpublished at 18:57 British Summer Time 8 September

    Worcs 182 v Notts 46-1

Well, I think we can safely assume the nightwatcher will not be required as this is the last over of the day.

Ben Allison has three slips in and Ben Slater leaves outside off stump.

Too wide to trouble the Notts opener.

The third ball is squeezed defensively to point.

He is able to let the last ball safely go through to keeper Gareth Roderick and that's it for day one.

Notts have the best of the day as they keep the pressure on Division One leaders Surrey.

The scoreline does not tell you anything about how hard the Pears had to work to scrap to 182 after Dillon Pennington and Josh Tongue reduced their former club to 37-5.

Gareth Roderick (61) added vital runs with Tom Taylor (40) after that onslaught - and Taylor subsequently removed opposition skipper Haseeb Hameed in the first over of the Notts innings.

Freddie McCann survived a difficult caught and bowled chance on 19 and he resumes tomorrow on 19. Ben Slater has 23.

    Worcs 182 v Notts 46-1

A couple of overs left tonight for the Pears to try and get another Notts wicket.

That was close as Freddie McCann is half forward to defend and beaten outside off stump.

He drops a shorter ball into the pitch on the back foot and then defends length balls going forward. Maiden over.

  5. 'Notts look a well-drilled side'published at 18:47 British Summer Time 8 September

    Worcs 182 v Notts 46-1

    Frank Watson

Provided Nottinghamshire get through to the end of the day without further damage, coach Peter Moores will be more than satisfied with the day's work from his team.

Dillon Pennington and Josh Tongue have been excellent with the ball. Mohammad Abbas has been tidy if less threatening and a good effort in the field.

They've looked a good side, a well-drilled side and a side that is pressing at the top of the Championship.

    Worcs 182 v Notts 46-1

Ben Allison replaces Khurram Shahzad in the Notts attack.

Ben Slater tries to drive through mid on but is stopped by Shahzad.

Slater pushes carefully into the off side to see and leaves the last ball outside off to see out the over.

  7. dropped catch

McCann dropped on 19published at 18:40 British Summer Time 8 September

    Worcs 182 v Notts 46-1

Matthew Waite is into his second over and Freddie McCann leaves on width outside the off stump.

Notts will certainly have the better of today's play if they can make it to stumps with nine wickets still in hand.

The fourth ball is driven through the off side for four as the ball just evades the fielder at point.

Close! A checked drive from McCann almost brings a return catch to Waite, who dives to his left but can't quite grab a low chance.

  8. 'It's gone well for Notts'published at 18:40 British Summer Time 8 September

    Worcs 182 v Notts 46-1

    Frank Watson
    BBC Hereford & Worcester

It's gone well for Notts since the wicket.

They came out with 16 overs to face, Haseeb Hameed went to the second ball of the innings. The worry would have been a low score in the Worcestershire and lose three or four tonight and it's game on, but actually Ben Slater and Freddie McCann have done really well. The two left-handers have applied themselves really well.

  9. Postpublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 8 September

    Worcs 182 v Notts 42-1

Khurram Shahzad will continue from the New Road End and Freddie McCann turns the first ball of the over to square leg for two.

Two more driven to long off.

The sun disappears behind the cloud and the square looks a bit gloomy for the first time since the rain delay.

Single to McCann driving to point and Ben Slater is on his toes to whip the last ball away leg side for four.

  10. Postpublished at 18:32 British Summer Time 8 September

    Worcs 182 v Notts 33-1

Medium pacer Matthew Waite replaces Tom Taylor from the Diglis End.

Two slips in and Ben Slater defends back up the pitch.

Slater is able to leave one on width and then picks up a couple with a steer to deep third.

    Five overs left tonight.

  11. 'Shahzad has bowled pretty well'published at 18:28 British Summer Time 8 September

    Worcs 182 v Notts 31-1

    Frank Watson
    BBC Hereford & Worcester

Khurram Shahzad has bowled pretty well here. You can't really say he's deserved a wicket because they've defended solidly against him.

Very, very tidy indeed. He's gone past the bat a few times and maybe you could argue make the batsman play a little bit more.

  12. Postpublished at 18:28 British Summer Time 8 September

    Worcs 182 v Notts 31-1

Khurram Shahzad bowls round the wicket to Freddie McCann, who is beaten outside off stump trying to defend.

The third ball is fuller and blocked into the popping crease and the fourth misses the outside edge by a whisker as McCann is squared up on the back foot.

An eventful maiden. Six overs left tonight if the light holds.

  13. Stumps at The Ovalpublished at 18:24 British Summer Time 8 September

    Surrey 246 v Warwickshire 132-4

An absorbing day of rollercoaster Championship cricket comes to a close.

After reaching 104-1 after being put in, a Surrey collapse of 84-7 either side of lunch saw Warwickshire wrestle back control, though Ryan Patel's unbeaten 72 from 67 balls almost pinched a batting point for the leaders as they were ousted for 246.

Tom Lawes produced a blistering five-over spell of 3-6 to reduce Bears to 47-4 in reply, but Ed Barnard (48*) and Will Young (35*) have steadied the ship and then some, rattling seven boundaries in the final six overs of the day to take their unbroken fifth-wicket stand to 85.

Warwickshire trail by just 114 runs with six wickets in hand, which will make day two very interesting, not just for these teams, but Notts too.

Huge first hour on Tuesday incoming...

  14. Postpublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 8 September

    Worcs 182 v Notts 31-1

A good line from Khurram Shahzad, who nearly lures Freddie McCann into a defensive prod outside off stump but he withdraws his bat at the last moment.

    Maiden over.

A rare long hop from Tom Taylor at the other end and Ben Slater hammers the ball away square for four.

Another half volley ends the over and Slater drives through point for four more.

  15. 'Nicely poised'published at 18:22 British Summer Time 8 September

    Surrey 246 v Warwickshire 132-4

    Mark Church
    BBC Radio London commentator

Nicely poised all this going into day two.

Any lead would be a good lead.

  16. Stumps at Canterburypublished at 18:20 British Summer Time 8 September

    Kent 293 v Lancashire 19-0

Keaton Jennings (10*) and Luke Wells (3*) negotiated the potentially tricky eight over spell in the gloaming without undue alarm and will be back in the morning looking to whittle down Kent's lead, and ideally build a big one of their own,

Mitch Stanley's maiden fivefer helped the Red Rose claw their way back from 150-1 and 217-2 to dismiss the basement boys for 293, with only Ben Compton (77) and Ben Dawkins making half-centuries, a first in first class cricket for 18-year-old Dawkins (60).

Lancashire will resume 274 behind on day two.

  17. Close of play at Hovepublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 8 September

    Sussex 42-3 v Hants 226

Maiden from Keith Barker and left arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin will see out the day with the final over.

Good turn and bounce into the left-handed Daniel Hughes who defends.

Hughes is forward and gets an inside edge off the fourth ball for one.

Two slips, a leg slip and a short leg are in. Now we have a silly mid off.

Hunt blocks out an over that took a bit longer to bowl than expected and that's the end of day one.

Honours about even in a low-scoring contest in which Hampshire were dismissed inside 72 overs on a pitch where several deliveries did not really come on to the bat and also offered turn for spinners Jack Carson and James Coles.

Ben Brown top scored with 71 after being dropped on 18.

Batting didn't get any easier for Sussex, who lost three inside 18 overs.

Daniel Hughes struggled to lay a bat on ball against Kyle Abbott in particular.

But he survives on a patient 17 off 67 balls with Sean Hunt on one run off 16.

Plenty of work for Sussex to do tomorrow.

Will Young and Ed BarnardImage source, Rex Features

Tom Lawes with a concerted shout for lbw as he angles one into the pads of Will Young who toppled forward off-balance, but it's heading down leg and the umpire is unmoved.

Lawes has gone for 16 in two overs after giving up six from his first five earlier this evening.

Will Young is 33* and Ed Barnard 32* with their partnership worth 67.

  19. Close of play at Lord'spublished at 18:08 British Summer Time 8 September

    Middlesex 12-0 v Derbyshire 283

Job done by Sam Robson and Josh de Caires, who negotiate a seven-over mini-session before stumps at Lord's without being parted.

Derbyshire were looking good on 124-1, thanks to Caleb Jewell (56) and Harry Came (64), but Toby Roland-Jones inspired a Middlesex fightback with a superb spell after lunch.

The former England seamer collected 6-77, the 34th time he has taken five or more wickets in a first-class innings.

  20. Postpublished at 18:06 British Summer Time 8 September

    Worcs 182 v Notts 19-1

Three to Freddie McCann, driving Tom Taylor through point and Ben Slater is off the mark with a single to fine leg.

Four more to McCann, driving Taylor through cover point.

Single next ball and Slater punches through cover on the back foot for four more.
