    Cox b Malik 34 (Essex 281-3 v Warwickshire)

Jordan Cox bowledImage source, Rex Features

A terrrible half-tracker from Zen Malik which Jordan Cox tries to slog out of the ground and quite rightly too.

But the batsman misses and is out.

Cox ends up on his backside, the ball clips the bails and Malik has his hands on his head in disblief at a first wicket of his first-class career.

    Comedy. Unless you're Jordan Cox.

  2. 'It's been a steady procession'published at 17:13 British Summer Time 29 July

    Notts v Somerset 292-3

    Dave Bracegirdle

Notts have been unable to create any opportunities or make a break in the scoring.

    It's been a steady procession.

Matt Parkinson celebrates wicketImage source, Rex Features

Lancashire spinner Chris Green has just picked up his sixth wicket to leave Glamorgan 229-7 at Old Trafford. The Australian has 6-74.

Former Red Rose spinner Matt Parkinson (pictured) also has also taken six wickets for Kent to help them fight back against leaders Leicestershire. The visitors are now 322-8 at Canterbury having been 272-4.

Derbyshire have reached 300 at Northants, seven down. Martin Andersson is unbeaten on 105.

A heavy shower has taken the players off at Cheltenham College. Middlesex were 232-3 when the rain arrived.

  4. Is this the fighting spirit needed?published at 17:01 British Summer Time 29 July

    Durham 153 v Surrey 46-3

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Durham were out for 153 earlier today, after deciding to bat. Given their relegation predicament I asked where their fighting spirit was?

Well, we are seeing some of what's needed now. Surrey have not found the going easy at all and are struggling at 45-3. They were 27-3, having lost Rory Burns for two, Dom Sibley for 12 and Sam Curran for four.

Matty Potts got Burns lbw, while Sibley edged Ben Raine to the keeper. Curran was then caught in the slips off his bowling.

I don't think this is a minefield of a track, but it is slower than usual and maybe the fact the ball is not coming onto the bat as truly as it should be is the main issue. We'll see how things pan out.

But it has been a good start with the ball for the hosts.

    Durham 153 v Surrey 46-3

Change of bowling for Durham, Bas de Leede gets his first bowl of the day.

Ben Raine toiled away brilliantly whilst Ryan Patel dug in particularly well and effectively to get through the crucial new ball period.

Dan Lawrence looking more comfortable than Sam Curran did before him.

  6. new ball

New ballpublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 29 July

    Notts v Somerset 281-3

Dillon Pennington is off the field currently with Matt Montgomery on as substitute for him, so he definitely is not taking the first over with the new pill.

Mo Abbas (3-27 off 14) will take it as expected, with I would guess Brett Hutton again.

James Rew is 136* and Tom Abell 126* their partnership is 256.

    16 overs remain today.

    Essex 267-2 v Warwickshire

    Tom WestleyImage source, Rex Features

Who is complaining about the Kookaburra ball? Certainly not Tom Westley who reaches a third century in four matches with the Aussie cherry.

That has been a chanceless hundred albeit brought up with an outside edge to the third man boundary off Ed Barnard.

And it follows up 130 against Hampshire and 107 against Yorkshire in the first two Kookaburra matches of midsummer.

That is a 32nd fist class century for the Essex skipper and he has the potential to go pretty big here on a pitch/ball that Warwickshire has failed to get much out of.

  8. 100 runs

    Northants v Derbyshire 288-7

Martin Andersson battingImage source, Getty Images

This is some rescue act from Derbyshire all-rounder Martin Andersson.

The 28-year-old came in at 89-5, but his third first-class century has taken his side to a competitive first-innings score.

  9. 250 runs

250 for Essexpublished at 16:50 British Summer Time 29 July

    Essex 250-2 v Warwickshire

A first batting point for Essex is safely banked as captain Tom Westley takes an easy two from Ed Barnard.

  10. 250 runs

250 partnership between Rew & Abellpublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 29 July

    Notts v Somerset 276-3

Quality batting from these two continues.

Liam Patterson-White continues alongside Lyndon James with just three overs now until the second new kookaburra ball is available.

  11. wicket

WICKETpublished at 16:46 British Summer Time 29 July

    Curran b McKinney b Raine 4 (Durham 153 v Surrey 27-3)

Sam Curran plays a loose T20 style drive with no footwork and gifts Ben Raine a second wicket, he edges a simple catch to Ben McKinney at first slip.

Surely now we will see Dan Lawrence come in at five?

  12. Postpublished at 16:42 British Summer Time 29 July

    Essex 240-2 v Warwickshire

Nice timing from Tom Westley who rocks on to his back foot and allows the middle of the bat to do the work, the ball racing through extra cover for four.

The Essex captain adds a single from the final delivery of Ethan Bamber's over to move to 86.

  13. Postpublished at 16:41 British Summer Time 29 July

    Durham 153 v Surrey 26-2

I am really not sure why but Sam Curran is batting at number four in this County Championship Division One match.

Ahead of genuine test class batter Dan Lawrence, even Jordan Clark, Ben Foakes and Cam Steel (who did not bowl a single over of leg spin earlier) many would say would be better off batting against a newish ball early in an innings in overcast northern conditions.

Remember Ryan Patel at three is left-handed too so it cannot be a right/left hand combination thought either.

  14. 'It doesn't feel like a 12-wicket pitch'published at 16:40 British Summer Time 29 July

    Durham 153 v Surrey 26-2

    Mark Church
    BBC Radio London commentator

It was a really good one from Ben Raine, maybe this pitch has more in it than we thought?

It was a pretty good ball to me, it was the pace of it that did him.

    It doesn't feel like a 12-wicket pitch.

  15. Elsewhere in Division Two...published at 16:39 British Summer Time 29 July

Away from Kane Williamson's latest century for Middlesex, another prolific hundred maker, Rehan Ahmed, has gone for 119.

But Division Two leaders Leicestershire are still well placed on 291-5 at Kent.

Lancashire have taken a couple of quick Glamorgan wickets to leave the visitors 211-5 at Old Trafford. Spinner Chris Green has 4-69.

Derbyshire continue their fine recovery from 89-5 at Northants. They're now 275-7 with Martin Andersson 94 not out.

  16. rain stops play

Rain stops playpublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 29 July

    Worcs v Hants 127-0

Some respite for Worcs has come after tea with the return of rain.

We have already lost the first session to the wet stuff and the hosts have done little to win the second with Hants dominant with the bat.

The covers are on and it looks gloomy.

  17. wicket

WICKETpublished at 16:36 British Summer Time 29 July

    Sibley c Foakes b Raine 12 (Durham 153 v Surrey 23-1)

It has been quiet for a few overs up at Chester-le-Street, Durham bowling tightly and Surrey batting in a more composed manner than their opponents did earlier.

Ben Raine is full, nagging and the triple centurion of course does not fare as well as he did on that flat pitch at the Oval just a few weeks ago.

    A little edge easily taken.

  18. 100 runs

for Williamsonpublished at 16:36 British Summer Time 29 July

    Gloucestershire v Middlesex 221-3

Two County Championship innings for Kane Williamson this season, two centuries.

The New Zealander goes to his 45th first-class century and it's come in rapid time at Cheltenham College - just 104 balls.

It's easy to see why he's considered one of the all-time great batters, and his stats back it up.

  19. 'It was a risky run'published at 16:35 British Summer Time 29 July

    Notts v Somerset 257-3

    Dave Bracegirdle
    BBC Radio Nottingham commentator

Notts were within a whisker of ending this partnership.

They decided to run straight away, that shouldn't have happened, it was a risky run.

    The stumps were narrowly missed.

  20. Walter's bad luckpublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 29 July

    Essex 226-2 v Warwickshire

Slight amendment to the mode of Paul Walter's dismissal after forensic analysis of the replays.

It appears the Essex opener got an outside edge of the bat on to the wicketkeeper's pad which then looped up to Alex Davies at slip.

It was not, as thought at the time, down and on to the batsman's own boot and up in the air to slip.

The fact he was out for 86 has not changed though.
