Summary

  1. Ind 28-2published at 11 overs

Shubman Gill guides Chris Woakes' first ball through third for four, but the England seamer responds well, twice challenging KL Rahul.

He strikes the opener a little too high on the leg, with the ball then looping to slip, then sees a delivery keep low and pass the bat.

Gill has moved to 18 from 23 balls - here's how he survived an lbw shout while still on zero.

The India captain's last two dismissals have been lbws.

That was the slowest opening spell by Jofra Archer in this series against India, but he is getting so much more swing. So, this appears to be a conscious decision from Archer.

India will need to keep doing that and getting runs, they can't get stuck and allow the bowlers to do what they want to do.

    Two fours for Shubman Gill.

He cut a short opening delivery from Chris Woakes through point, then drives down the ground two balls later, just beating the flailing left hand of the bowler.

Woakes then hits Gill on the pad, but there's another inside edge there.

    Phwoar.

Jofra Archer sends down a snorter to KL Rahul, with the ball whistling past the gloves of the remaining opener.

Rahul managed to dip inside the lifting delivery, having already been struck on the back leg earlier in the over.

    Maiden over for Jofra Archer.

  8. Ind 14-2published at 7 overs

Shubman Gill starts Chris Woakes' fourth over by finding three through the covers.

One more single follows, with KL Rahul turning the ball down to fine leg.

23.3% of England's deliveries in the first five overs were going on to hit the stumps. This is the highest percentage of any first five overs of an innings by either team in this series.

You may remember during the Lord's Ashes Test of 2023, England and Ben Stokes were criticised for being too slow to get out there after a break in bowler-friendly conditions. It was suggested they were not in the right frame of mind for the heat of the battle.

You could not say that about the beginning of this session. Stokes strode to the middle while rubbing his hands together.

It's been a slug fest for four Tests but only now do you see a gap opening up between the two sides. India got 358 in the first innings but that simply wasn't enough. This is what England have been trying to bring in slowly, that little bit of ruthlessness with your foot on the throat.

This time it's Chris Woakes who lands a delivery on the pads of Shubman Gill.

The final ball of the over and umpire Rod Tucker isn't interested - heading down the leg side again, I think.

Prior to that KL Rahul drove down the ground to pick up three runs.

Why do England lose their review if there was no conclusive evidence? Surely it's the same as umpire's call and they should retain it?

Perfect conditions and they have India on the ropes. Landed a few already and Jofra Archer has that ball on a leash. India had two new balls against England but not once did it look this potent.

Up goes Jofra Archer once again!

Shubman Gill tries to play into the leg side and is struck on the pads by another full delivery.

Archer pleads with umpire Ahsan Raza but nothing doing - the correct decision too, ball tracking has it passing a little high and wide of leg stump.

  18. Ind 3-2published at 3.4 overs

Shubman Gill takes two in the covers to get off the mark, but Jofra Archer raps the India captain's gloves with a fearsome following delivery.

The physio comes on to take a look - Gill is good to continue.

A little bit of luck for Shubman Gill. You could have tossed a coin either way but a good decision I suppose.

    Ooooh, that is very close.

It seems to strike the bottom of the pad - the bit that arches down around the top of the shoe - and Shubman Gill's bat simultaneously.

Third umpire Kumar Dharmasena states he has no conclusive evidence to overturn Ahsan Raza's decision - Gill survives and England lose a review.
