Summary

  1. England reviewpublished at 76.4 overs

    NZ 296-7

After hitting back-to-back boundaries, has Glenn Phillips edged Ben Stokes behind?

The umpire is unmoved but England call for the review.

  2. NZ 288-7published at 76 overs

Shoaib Bashir goes round the wicket to try and change things up with Glenn Phillips and Matt Henry managing to score fairly comfortable off him early in the over.

Five from it in total. This is turning into a very useful partnership for New Zealand.

  3. NZ 283-7published at 75 overs

Good running brings Matt Henry three after he punches Ben Stokes over cover.

He is hit by a bouncer as he tries to duck to end the over. No real harm done, though. It was more of a glancing blow.

The lights are on at the Hagley Oval and it's looking a little gloomy with less than 10 minutes left before we enter the extra half hour.

  4. NZ 279-7published at 74.1 overs

Glenn Phillips takes a single from the first ball of Ben Stokes' over and the field spreads.

With Matt Henry on strike, it's back to the short ball ploy...

  5. 6 runs

    NZ 278-7published at 74 overs

Dragged down by Shoaib Bashir and Glenn Phillips is onto it in a flash.

Onto the back foot and he heaves it away over the leg side for the first six of the day.

Six to the total and six overs until the second new ball is available.

  6. NZ 267-7published at 73 overs

    Great timing from Matt Henry.

After swinging and missing at a bouncer from Ben Stokes, he nails a fuller ball through to covers and away for four.

There's a big lbw appeal last ball of the over but, after a chat with those behind the stumps, Stokes shakes his head.

No review. It looked to be sliding down leg.

Not since Nathan Lyon for Australia in 2016 has a side taken three wickets with spin on day one at the Hagley Oval. Well bowled, Shoaib Bashir!

  8. NZ 261-7published at 72 overs

Tossed up by Shoaib Bashir and Matt Henry needs no further invitation.

He skips down and thumps the ball over long on, one bounce for four.

With Henry and Glenn Phillips at the crease, you'd expect a few shots to be played now.

  9. NZ 255-7published at 71 overs

Having survived that review, Glenn Phillips unleashes a ferocious drive to end the over.

There is a fielder sweeping on the off side boundary, though, so it only brings him a single.

  10. Not outpublished at 70.3 overs

    NZ 254-7

No wonder Glenn Phillips was so quick to review.

No bat or glove involved as the ball from Ben Stokes whizzed down leg, brushing only the batter's trousers on the way through.

  11. New Zealand reviewpublished at 70.3 overs

England think they've got Glenn Phillips caught behind down the leg side.

The umpire agrees but Phillips does not and reviews immediately.

    Over to the third umpire...

  12. NZ 253-7published at 70 overs

Successful over for Shoaib Bashir, much to the delight of the smug Stephan Shemilt.

Matt Henry is the new batter for New Zealand and gets off the mark with a single.

Naming no names*, last night I was involved in an animated debate with two of my media colleagues over Shoaib Bashir's inclusion in the England side for this Test. I was pro-Bashir and am now quite smug.

*It was Rory Dollard of PA Media and Vish Ehantharajah from ESPNCricinfo.

    WICKETpublished at 69.3 overs

    Smith c Root b Bashir 3 (NZ 252-7)

    Shoaib Bashir has his third!

It looks very much like a plan coming together for England as the off-spinner keeps a straight line with a bit of turn and Nathan Smith just helps the ball into the hands of Joe Root at leg gully.

Smart catch from Root. England are into the bowlers...

  15. NZ 252-6published at 69 overs

Solid over from Ben Stokes on his return to the attack with just a leg bye coming from it.

England will feel if they can break this stand fairly soon, they'll have a decent chance of bowling New Zealand out before the close.

If they manage that then you'd have to say it has been their day.

    Thanks, Mike.

There are 22 overs still to be bowled in the day to get us up to the scheduled 90 but I can't see that happening, even with the extra hour half.

Still, plenty of time left in what has been a very good evening session for England and the skipper is coming into the attack for the first over after drinks.

Smith has first runs in Test cricket, pushing Bashir into the covers for two.

He brings up New Zealand's 250 in the process, then adds another single in the same area to close the over.

The players will take drinks and I'll hand over to Sam Drury to guide you through to the end of the day.

  18. Australia add Webster to squadpublished at 04:16 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2024

Some news from down under, where Australia have called up Tasmanian Beau Webster to their squad for the second Test against India in Adelaide.

Webster will join the squad in Adelaide next week having been named the Sheffield Shield player of the year last summer and continuing that form this season.

The 30-year-old all-rounder averages 38 in first-class cricket with the bat and 37 with the ball.

He will provide cover for Mitchell Marsh, who is struggling for fitness following Australia's defeat in the first Test.

  19. NZ 247-6published at 67 overs

Debutant Nathan Smith is the next New Zealand batter - I'm not sure he'd have anticipated having a bat today, given the position his side were in at tea.

A Phillips single brings him on strike, and he defends the final three balls of Atkinson's over.

    Blundell c Atkinson b Bashir 17 (NZ 246-6)

    BashirImage source, Getty Images

This time it's Blundell cutting to the fielder!

Handy bounce from Bashir from his famously high release point and Blundell doesn't handle it, punching the ball in a shot that verges on a drive.

The ball flies to Atkinson at point who, having had a catch taken in a similar area off his own bowling a few overs ago, snaffles with a dive to his right.

New Zealand are 53-3 in the 15 overs since tea.
