Summary

  1. NZ 120-2published at 28 overs

    Oof!

There has been plenty of bounce in this surface and we've just seen another example of it.

Banged in back of a length by Brydon Carse and the ball rears up to hit Kane Williamson on the grille of his helmet.

He seems OK and plays continues without a concussion check. Did the umpires think it hit him elsewhere?

Right then, it's the middle of the night in the UK, England are in need of wickets and what better way to keep yourselves going than by showing off your creativity...

Anonymous' message at 00:46 GMT got me thinking about the potential for a cricket-related rom-com (00:49) - I came up with what I'm sure we can all agree was a flawless plot.

So now it's over to you to come up with your best cricket-related rom-com titles...

Williamson is absurdly consistent at home. He averages more than 50 on all five days of Tests in New Zealand - and averages a remarkable 387 on the final day. He's just getting going.

  4. NZ 119-2published at 27 overs

Rachin Ravindra is striking the ball beautifully so far in this afternoon session.

He adds another boundary with an excellently-timed shot through backward point off Chris Woakes.

This partnership is now worth 57 and England come really do with breaking it.

  5. NZ 114-2published at 26 overs

There is still a little bit in this surface for the seamers.

Having been driven through the covers for two by Kane Williamson, Brydon Carse comes back with a super ball that moves away to beat the former New Zealand skipper as he went on the drive again.

A cricket-related rom-com is long overdue but I think this has the makings of one, Anonymous.

I'm thinking the conflict comes with a fall out over whether umpire's call should be scrapped or not.

But obviously it all works out after a chance meeting at a Test match in the last half hour...

Had a first date this evening where we both discovered a shared love of cricket. We are now camped in front of the telly with pizza and coffees attempting to compose believable sick notes for tomorrow.

  8. NZ 112-2published at 25 overs

Rachin Ravindra punches elegantly through the off side two balls running, picking up two each time.

Chris Woakes responds with a beauty that nips away to beat the outside edge but strays onto the pads last ball.

Whipped through mid-wicket for four by Ravindra.

  9. NZ 104-2published at 24.1 overs

    Ravindra 21, Williamson 26

We're back under way and it's a good ball to start from Chris Woakes.

Full and nipping back slightly to hit the left-handed Rachin Ravindra on the pad.

There's a strangled appeal. It was heading well down leg.

We've just seen another replay of the one that got away for England before lunch.

A feather of an outside edge from Rachin Ravindra but no appeal from the tourists. A potentially costly error from Ben Stokes and co.

They'll hope not and the players are back out with Chris Woakes ready to bowl the first over of the afternoon...

    Thanks, Mike.

Not long until the afternoon sessions gets under way and while Mike goes in search of chocolate mini rolls, my overnight strategy has seen me hold off on the coffee until now.

Cup one of a full cafetiere has just been poured and the energy boost should get me through the first hour of this session at least!

Right, with about 10 minutes to go until play resumes, and with my overnight chocolate mini-roll stock already running dangerously low, it's time for me to hand over to Sam Drury.

I'm off to raid an all-night garage.

My son's strategy for staying up all night, which is to be a teething baby, works wonders.

Easy all-nighter is this for me. On the night shift until 4am so will be on the coffee and live text all night.

    Joel - Lancashire

Tell you what, this live text hasn't spoken well of the productivity of the average cricket fan.

Overnight essays, shirking work, pulling sickys.

    Still, can you blame us?

    Probably New Zealand's session, that.

England beat the edge on a few occasions, but the New Zealand batters didn't look too troubled as they steadily accumulated their 104 runs.

Tom Latham will have been disappointed to have missed out on a big score after looking well set, while Kane Williamson started slowly with one run from his first 20 balls - he's now moved to 26 from 57.

Ravindra has looked comfortable since arriving at the crease, taking 21 from 30 balls.

    Ollie Pope and DRS again?

  18. Lunch - NZ 104-2published at 24 overs

Hello, have England missed a chance to take another wicket before lunch?

Stokes beats Ravindra's outside edge and the ball is taken behind the stumps by a smiling Ollie Pope.

Not a hint of an appeal from the England players, but replays with the technology show that there was an edge there - no-one picked it up!

Ravindra survives and goes on to take a single into the off side to move to 21. The only run of the over, and the last run of the session.

Will England go on to rue that? They'll be gathered around the screens at the lunch break...

Mike, the main problem with these overnighters from an armchair fan’s perspective, whether New Zealand or Australia, at what time does night become day? It’s maybe a drinks break? At what time do you rouse yourself from the armchair and stick the kettle on for the first brew of the morning rather than having the last Scotch of the night?

    Anon

Alas, Mr or Mrs Anon (please sign your messages!), I can't weigh in on this debate - I am neither a drinker of alcohol or hot drinks (bar the occasional hot chocolate).

I am seven down on the chocolate mini-rolls though.

  20. NZ 103-2published at 23 overs

Woakes returns in place of Atkinson for a bit of a burst before lunch.

Ravindra watches him for four balls, turns him for two through square from the fifth, and retains the strike with a pulled single from the sixth.
