    No doubt about that.

Will Williams is pinned on the back foot by Craig Overton and the decision is a formality for the umpire.

Josh Bohannon is the new batsman for Lancashire and he could be key to their hopes of a sizeable second-innings score.

He is beaten outside off stump by a beauty first up. Wicket maiden.

We spoke yesterday about Keaton Jennings coming down the pitch to the seam bowlers.

    Surrey 52-0 v Durham 262

Surrey skipper Rory Burns passed 1,000 championship runs for the season yesterday evening and more importantly got the leaders off to a flyer.

He comes to the crease with fellow former England Test opener Dom Sibley to continue building a platform for a first innings lead.

Despite that defeat at Somerset last time out, Surrey could still mathematically wrap up the game in this match if they outscore the West Country side by 15 points.

Daniel Hogg opens things up for a Durham attack shorn of England call-ups Brydon Carse and Matthew Potts. Burns on strike.

George Garrett to get things under way on day two, with Schadendorf on strike.

There are no two ways about it - Somerset need early wickets.

Harry Singh and nightwatch Will Williams are the not out batters for the Red Rose. Craig Overton will bowl the day's first over.

Somerset head coach Jason Kerr professed himself "certainly not happy" at the end of a frantic opening day of their vital Championship game against Lancashire at Old Trafford.

Having bowled out the home side cheaply, the title hopefuls missed out on the chance to add a bonus point or two with the bat as they managed a first-innings lead of just six runs.

"Twenty-one wickets in the day suggests there’s something happening with the surface but to be 58 for one gave us an opportunity to take the game forward and we’ve missed that opportunity," said Kerr.

“I thought Lancashire bowled well on that surface but you need to find a way to absorb pressure and then put it back on the opposition and we didn’t do that."

Hampshire pair Nick Gubbins (153*) and Liam Dawson (102*) need only one more run this morning to make it to a 200 partnership in Southampton.

Gubbins said his side knew first innings runs could be crucial so it was nice to get a big score on the board on day one.

“I thought the boys were good throughout the day. Vincey was unlucky and then Daws came in. What a cricketer, he batted really nicely.

“We got a partnership going which makes it a lot easier. We know bonus points are a key point for us if we are going to chase down Surrey and do something special,” said Gubbins.

Worcestershire head coach Alan Richardson said his side had been “a bit sloppy” which made for a “long day” day at the office.

“They batted very well and put some strong partnerships together. From us it wasn’t the skillsets that were require," he said.

“It is up to the bowlers and the fielders to take and create as many opportunities as we can. One thing we do know about this group of players is they are resilient and they won’t be too downbeat.”

    Surrey 52-0 v Durham 262 (starts 10:30)

Dan Worrall takes a wicketImage source, Rex Features

Surrey all-rounder Tom Curran hailed team-mate Dan Worrall as a "genius of a bowler" after the Australian took 4-39 on the opening day against Durham at The Oval.

Worrall now has 48 wickets for the season, a total exceeded by only Essex's Jamie Porter in Division One.

"It’s a pleasure to watch him go to work week in and week out. He has amazing skills. I don’t think there is as much in this pitch for the seamers as there has been in previous matches here this season," Curran told BBC Radio London.

With title rivals Somerset having missed out on any batting points against Lancashire, the onus is on Surrey now to avoid a similar scenario, but Curran added: "We are just concentrating on what we are doing here and not watching what is going on elsewhere in the country."

  20. 'We play with the purpose and mindset to win'published at 10:16 British Summer Time 18 September

    Kent v Notts 393-6 (starts 10:30)

Kent's relegation fate may already have been all but sealed before play began yesterday, but interim head coach Mark Dekker wants to see his side go down fighting.

After Nottinghamshire openers Haseeb Hameed (56) and Ben Slater (160) put on 196, Kent wrestled back a little momentum as the visitors reached stumps on 393-6.

“The last thing we can be thinking and sitting and saying is dwelling on two hours of poor cricket in the first session," said Dekker.

“We’ve got three days of cricket left, we play to the best of our ability, we play with the purpose to win and play with the mindset to win. That’s what’s demanded of us no matter where we are in the table.”

Barring a dramatic batting collapse, Kent are almost certain to have leaked 400 first-innings runs in all but one of their Championship matches this season so far.

Notts, meanwhile, are in a headlong fight with Lancashire to avoid the second relegation spot and can pick up full five batting points if they add 57 runs in the next 14 overs.
