  1. Bears plot route back at Edgbastonpublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 18 September

    Warks 78 v Essex 189-9 (starts 10:30)

On paper, Warwickshire’s game-plan today is simple: Wrap up the tail, bat big and set up the game.

Yet even the most one-eyed Bears fan would admit executing it could prove another matter entirely against Essex, who have arguably the best bowling attack in the country.

In their favour, day two could prove a decent day to bat. The hosts certainly believed the sting looked to be leaving the pitch when Essex were adding vital runs last night, pushing on to a 111- run lead after skittling their hosts for 78.

“In the last couple of hours it felt like the pace had gone out of the pitch a bit and it definitely didn't do so much,” said Warwickshire seam bowler Ed Barnard. “So hopefully we can bat past them and try to set up a game.”

Essex, who were outstanding with the ball on day one, will have other ideas.

It's 'as you were' in the Division Two promotion battle following day one in the penultimate round of Championship games, with the three contenders earning three bonus points each..

Leaders Sussex - who were 21 points clear at the start - and third-placed Middlesex bowled out Gloucestershire and Derbyshire and will be intent on establishing sizeable first-innings leads today.

Yorkshire, in second place, batted first in Cardiff and George Hill followed his unbeaten 169 against Middlesex two weeks ago with 90 as they totalled 361.

"To lose the toss and get put in on that sort of deck, we are pretty happy overall," said team-mate James Wharton, and the White Rose will now look to their bowlers for early Glamorgan wickets on day two.

At this time of the season there is no shortage of drama in the County Championship.

And although there was nothing to quite match last week's thrilling finale between Somerset and Surrey on day one in our nine games, there were certainly plenty of entrances and exits.

A total of 21 wickets fell at Old Trafford, where Somerset are seeking a win to keep the pressure on in the title race, while Division Two leaders Sussex ran through Gloucestershire for 109.

What lies in store on day two? Stay with us to find out. Play starts at 10:30 BST.
