  1. 'We won't be letting up'published at 18:27 British Summer Time 21 September

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh speaking to TMS: "It was a tricky wicket with a bit of seam, a bit spin and the way the boys bowled was outstanding."

On the last wicket stand: "It goes to show how crucial those partnerships at the end can be in a low a scoring game. On his own 50: It was nice to get a couple myself and get us out of danger. It's a good win.

Having Starc and Hazlewood back: "When you welcome that much experience back, it is always good. It was a good learning experience for Hardie bowling with Starc and Hazlewood.

On the game at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday: "We will be picking our best team for the next game to try to win this series."

As Mitchell Marsh said, 270 felt a little short for Australia - even if it proved to be easily enough.

Marsh and Alex Carey were the only two batters to pass 30, here's the highlights from their respective innings.

  7. 'It is about being patient'published at 18:20 British Summer Time 21 September

England captain Harry Brook on Sky Sports: "Headingley is a tough place to bowl and I thought we did a good job, we lost our way in the Powerplay and it didn't quite come off."

On Australia's last wicket stand: "These situations are tough, you try to get the 11 on strike, but if they get a few boundaries early in the over its tough to drag back. I don't think I could have done much more about that.

"We are an inexperienced side playing one of the best in the world, it is a new era and it is about patience and trying to have fun as well.

"There are so many positives we can take from these two games, we have done everything we said we wanted to do. We have taken it to the bowlers and tried to take wickets throughout but it hasn't gone our way."

  8. '270 always feels a little bit short'published at 18:15 British Summer Time 21 September

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh speaking to Sky Sports: "I think these days 270 always feels a little bit short. But we knew it was a new wicket and if we got early wickets we had a chance. It really goes to show those little tail-ender partnerships are really important.

"The experience when you're trying to defend a total like that. The ball was moving around a bit, Aaron Hardie bowled well, I'm really happy with the win.

"I think the big thing for us is focusing what we're trying to do. Facing England in England is always a tough assignment, we've had a few injuries but it was good to get experience back today."

  9. 'I've had great fun'published at 18:12 British Summer Time 21 September

Player of the match Alex Carey speaking to Sky Sports: "I love it here, it's always a warm welcome! I think they bowled really well up front and got us in a bit of trouble, Josh Hazlewood did a fantastic job.

"I thought Hardie bowled really well, a young bowler stepping into the match is really great."

On competition with Josh Inglis to play: "Josh is a great young player. I've sat on the bench for the last period, an opportunity popped up, I don't know how long it will last but I've had great fun."

Mark Hollings: The simple fact is that the mentality is all wrong. The messaging from both red and white ball captains (all five of them) is that they don’t really care if they lose. You’d never catch India or Australia with that kind of attitude.

There's a lot to learn, it's not T20, it is a different game and some of the guys, T20 specialists, need to realise that. The Aussies are not the type to ooze sympathy, this could be a long week for a very inexperienced England side.

It doesn't look like a balanced England team.

They feel like a bit of a juggernaut this Australia side, they have been very on it despite some juggling of the side. Mitchell Marsh will be very pleased with what he saw today.

  13. wicket

Australia win by 68 runspublished at 40.1 overs
    Breaking

Stone c Smith b Starc 1 (Eng 202 all out)

And England's last pairing makes... one.

Stone tries to duck out of Starc's first delivery, the ball strikes the back of his raised bat and flies in the air towards the slips, where Steven Smith takes the catch running backwards.

A somewhat comic end to an innings where England have fallen well short of a chaseable target.

This is not what you need if you're a number eleven - 70 needed, and the skipper turns to Mitchell Starc.

England needed 73 to win when their final partnership came together in the 2019 Ashes.

They only need 70 this time but Matthew Potts is not Ben Stokes.

  16. Eng 202-9published at 40 overs

Olly Stone is last up for England, and he gets a single immediately through the covers.

Australia's last pairing made 49 in the first innings, but Alex Carey was one of the batters.

That was a nice innings by Rashid, he did his best, he's a very capable batter.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 39.5 overs

    Rashid lbw b Maxwell 27 (Eng 201-9)

    All reds on the tracker.

Striking half way up the stumps, Rashid has to walk off.

And the crowds can be seen hurrying out of the stands.

  19. Umpire reviewpublished at 17:56 British Summer Time 21 September

Rashid struck on the pad by Maxwell, trying to chop the ball away fine.

Joel Wilson's finger goes up, Rashid sends it upstairs - he has to.
