Beautiful shot from Smith, words to describe that - are there enough?

  2. Eng 55-3published at 8 overs

Jamie "yet to put a foot wrong, really" Smith gets going with a lovely back-foot punch for four off Hardie. He's done it in tests, can he make his mark in the white-ball game today?

Take a look at some of Duckett's early work...

  4. Eng 51-3published at 7.3 overs

Ben Duckett looks like he's playing in a different game - he clips new bowler Aaron Hardie off his legs for another boundary.

Will Jacks was dismissed by an excellent Matthew Short catch.

    Brook lbw b Starc 4 (Eng 46-3)

Gone! A great delivery, that was clattering into leg stump and the England skipper is heading back to dressing room.

Brook is going to review it, I suppose they have to. But it absolutely nailed him.

  8. England reviewpublished at 15:29 British Summer Time 21 September 2024

Brook is trapped on the back foot by Starc. It looks plumb but he's reviewing - bat involved?

  9. Eng 46-2published at 6.3 overs

Harry Brook is up and running, clipping Mitchell Starc off his pads with lovely timing to reach the boundary. Needless to say that goes down very well with his Yorkshire public.

Hazlewood built the pressure and Salt was gone.

  11. Eng 42-2published at 6 overs

Hazlewood's line goes awry, he strays onto leg and Duckett guides him off his hip for another boundary.

The scoring rate's not a problem, but being two down already might be.

  12. 6 runs

    Eng 38-2published at 5.3 overs

The shot off the next ball is more one for the purists - Hazlewood pitches up, but Duckett lifts him high over mid-wicket for six, a good way back into the Western Terrace.

  13. Eng 32-2published at 5.2 overs

Ben Duckett won't be tied down and ramps Josh Hazlewood - we're so used to seeing that now, aren't we? - over Carey's head. Four or six?

    Four

  14. How's stat?!published at 15:20 British Summer Time 21 September 2024

    Ben Jones
    CricViz analyst

Phil Salt is a fantastic player, but he's been very frenetic at the top of the order. From his 18 innings as an ODI opener, Salt plays a false shot 25% of the time - the only Englishman to open as often, and play with more risk (since 2006 when records began) was Phil Mustard, with 26% false shots.

  15. Eng 28-2published at 5 overs

How will Harry Brook play this one? Go for his shots like at Trent Bridge or try to rebuild steadily?

There's plenty of time, but 270 now feels like a good total, doesn't it? And that last wicket stand - hmm....

That line is so good to a right-hander when he first comes in. The team meetings say he'll swing into right-handers to begin with, this one slid across.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 4.3 overs

    Jacks c Short b Starc 0 (Eng 28-2)

Will Jacks goes for a first-baller, driving outside off stump and seeing Matthew Short dive away to his right claim a good two-handed catch.

  18. Postpublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 21 September 2024

Salt got a life early on, but he didn't last too much longer...

It was inevitable that something was going to happen, the ball was going to fly away from an edge or was going to be taken behind. Luckily for Australia it went to Alex Carey behind the stumps.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 4 overs

    Salt c Carey b Hazlewood 12 (Eng 26-1)

That felt like it was coming - it's just outside off, and Salt flashes again but this time he edges it through to the jubilant Alex Carey.

Will Jacks is out to join Ben Duckett.
