Five wickets is the joint most England have lost in a powerplay against Australia, tied with matches in Adelaide in 2018 and Lord's in 2005.

Jamie Smith clumps Aaron Hardie high over mid-on - Mitchell Starc slides in the shadow of the new-ish stand at that end but cannot stop it hitting the rope.

On the bright side at least it won't be our failure to take the final wicket that costs us this game...

Why isn't Root in the ODI squad? Need someone to just anchor an innings. This is poor from us.

    Dale, Swindon

Joe Root has been rested for this series.

  7. Eng 75-5published at 11 overs

A great way for Jacob Bethell to get off the mark, a meaty cut shot off Hazlewood flies to the boundary.

Two balls later, the bowler drops short and Bethell pulls him fiercely to the rope at mid-wicket.

Poor game awareness from England. It's not a big total. Approach it with patience, especially with wickets falling. Bored of them saying 'this is how we play' and proceeding to lose playing that way.

England have more runs than Australia after 10 overs... but their worm might not last much longer.

Bethell staves off the hat-trick, but whatever way you slice it, England are in what is officially known as all sorts of trouble.

It's one of the worst ways to get out in cricket. It was there to be hit into the leg side, but instead Alex Carey dives to take the catch.

Aaron Hardie is on a hat-trick!

Liam Livingstone flicks at one down the leg side, and Carey takes a superb catch one-handed to his left!

It's Jacob Bethell facing the hat-trick ball...

What a catch from Hardie! In your follow-through as a pace bowler, either it sticks or it doesn't and this one sticks.

  14. wicket

WICKETpublished at 15:43 British Summer Time 21 September

    Duckett c and b Hardie 32 (Eng 65-4)

    What a catch!

Duckett's pull is mistimed, but Hardie has to change direction yet he still manages to cling on one-handed just above the deck in his follow-through.

And off the next? Smith finds the boundary again, this time off his legs past midwicket. I'll just start looking up some superlatives...

Beautifully played down the ground by Jamie Smith, who looks like he's played 100 games for England, he looks so calm and collected.

  19. Eng 61-3published at 8.3 overs

Dan Norcross may have to find some more words to describe Smith today - he's driven Starc back down past the bowler for four more with another lovely shot.

Beautiful bowling from Mitchell Starc. Seven deliveries in a row swung away from Brook a marginal amount, holding their line. Then an inswinger coming back 2.7 degrees - the most of any ball Brook faced - to take the England skipper's pad. A new ball clinic, that.
