    Smith c sub b Hazlewood 49 (Eng 159-7)

    Smith doesn't make 50!

He clips Hazlewood straight to the substitute Jake Fraser-McGurk at mid-wicket.

He troops off the field, and, you'd imagine, England's hopes in this match go with him.

Brydon Carse is stealing the strike a lot here. Since the all-rounder has arrived at the crease, Jamie Smith has faced 14 balls - Carse has faced 36.

  3. Eng 159-6published at 30 overs

Jamie Smith has to wait for his fifty as Brydon Carse faces the first five balls of Aaron Hardie's over.

Having come onto strike, Smith retains it for the following over with a cut single.

But before he faces his next ball the players will take drinks.

  4. Eng 157-6published at 29 overs

Josh Hazlewood returns to replace Zampa, and sees a thick Smith inside-edge skew away through fine leg, the pace of the delivery helping the ball run away for four.

The England keeper moves to 48.

Lovely shot, almost premeditated, meets it on the half-volley and deposits into the second tier.

    Eng 152-6published at 28 overs

A lovely shot from Brydon Carse!

Matthew Short comes onto bowl, and Carse comes down the pitch to loft the spinner's third delivery down the ground for six, bringing up England's 150 in the process.

A wide and a last ball single bring a couple more runs from the over.

  8. Eng 144-6published at 27 overs

Zampa continues to offer his customary control, with three singles coming off the over.

England can afford a few quiet overs though, it's wickets they can no longer afford.

  9. Eng 141-6published at 26 overs

Nicely done by Brydon Carse, tidily guiding Glenn Maxwell through backward point for four.

He then takes a leg side single to retain the strike.

Yes this is a "new" England team so we have to give allowances but it was well beaten by a second string Aussie team, so when are the allowances merely excuses for poor performance?

  11. Eng 136-6published at 25 overs

Three singles close out Zampa's fourth over.

That's the half way mark and England are just over half way to their target.

It's those six wickets that are the problem...

  12. Not outpublished at 24.2 overs

    Ooooh, close.

Umpire's call on height, possibly striking the top of leg.

    That wasn't far away.

  13. Umpire reviewpublished at 24.2 overs

Having lashed Zampa's first ball over mid-on for four, Carse attempts to sweep the following delivery and is struck on the pad.

Nothing from the umpire, after some discussion Australia send it upstairs.

  14. Eng 129-6published at 24 overs

Maxwell rattles through an over, a Carse push to mid-off bringing its only run.

It's not even a bad delivery, just slightly back of a length.

  16. 6 runs

    Eng 128-6published at 23 overs

    Into the stands!

Carse gets a single from his ninth delivery to bring Jamie Smith back on strike.

The England wicketkeeper then dispatches Zampa's final delivery, dropping into position early and lofting it high over mid-wicket for six.

  17. Eng 120-6published at 22 overs

Into England's fairly lengthy tail as Brydon Carse arrives at the crease.

He fends away five deliveries to give Maxwell the wicket maiden.

Bethell was absolutely undone by Maxwell there.

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 21.1 overs

    Bethell c Starc b Maxwell 25 (Eng 120-6)

And that's the end of the partnership.

Fired in, sitting up short and wide and Bethell goes for the cut, but only manages to spoon a top edge towards gully.

Mitchell Starc takes a few steps then takes the catch on the dive, before looking up with a big grin.

  20. Eng 120-5published at 21 overs

A couple more singles from the rest of the over.

Smith is now on 35, Bethell on 25.
