That four brought up the fifty partnership between Smith and Bethell in 10.4 overs.

A beautiful shot by Smith, the key to that was the placement.

    Thanks Tim.

Jamie Smith welcomes my arrival by driving Adam Zampa's first ball through the covers for four.

The Australian leggie has changed ends after one over.

The boundary brings up the fifty partnership.

  4. Eng 114-5published at 20 overs

Maybe Maxwell's offies are a tempting sight after seeing off Starc - Smith swipes him high into the covers but it lands between two fielders.

And on that note, I'll hand over to m'learned friend Mike Peter for the rest of the England innings.

  5. Eng 110-5published at 19 overs

Starc's seventh over is right on the money, Bethell takes a single and Smith is ultra-watchful for the rest.

This is interesting - Adam Zampa is off after just one over and is replaced by Glenn Maxwell.

  6. Eng 109-5published at 18 overs

An ugly hoick from Smith skews off to long off off the toe end of the bat. He's struck on the pad off the final delivery, there's an appeal from Carey but Joel Wilson shakes his head - rightly, that was heading off down the leg side.

  7. Eng 107-5published at 17.2 overs

Here's Adam Zampa, very much the man in form - this will be some test for Smith and Bethell.

I think the entire Headingley crowd just gasped in unison when Mitchell Starc hurled a yorker in to Jacob Bethell. Good stuff from the England youngster but there's a long way to go.

Jamie Smith is on to the short ball so quickly.

  10. 6 runs

    Eng 106-5published at 16.5 overs

He'd been quiet for a long time, but Jamie Smith gets going again by climbing into a short one, sending Starc a long, long way back into the Western Terrace over square leg.

Sad to see all the negative comments. England are a young team in transition against by far the best white ball team in the world. Would love to see Smith and Bethell see England home and silence the moaners. A big ask and it probably won’t happen but you never know.

  12. Eng 98-5published at 16 overs

Another over slips by, the English pair nurdle four from Josh Hazlewood and to follow that Mitchell Starc returns to the attack.

  13. Eng 94-5published at 15 overs

It had gone a bit quiet for a few overs, but Bethell lifts the mood with a front-foot pull for four off Hazlewood. With that, he overtakes the becalmed Smith.

England’s descent into mediocrity has been startling. Post Morgan they have just got worse year on year. Australia are a superb side admittedly but England are nowhere at the moment in both short-form formats.

Speaking of great grabs, take a gander at these two - off consecutive deliveries.

I really worry about McCullum taking over the ODI team. Based off his Test coaching there seems to be no acknowledgment of fault or willingness to absorb pressure. Despite the hype, they are miles off India and Australia and seem to actually come across quite arrogant in their approach to the game.

  17. dropped catch

Smith dropped on 17published at 14 overs

    Eng 88-5

Jamie Smith pulls Hardie to midwicket, and Matthew Short, diving to his left, cannot hold on to what would have been an amazing catch had it stuck.

Half of these players don't play 50-over cricket anymore in favour of T20 franchises, and then we wonder why they don't know how to pace a 50-over innings properly.

  19. Eng 88-5published at 12.5 overs

It's still a free hit, and Jacob Bethell drops to one knee to smash it over mid off for four.

Hazlewood responds with a good one that just leaves Bethell groping outside his off stump.

  20. Eng 84-5published at 12.3 overs

Josh Hazlewood oversteps and gives away a free hit - and that delivery is a wide.

And the next? A wide down leg - which Alex Carey prevents from going for four with an excellent dive to his right.
