Carey's 74 from 67 was the best Australian batting effort, with Mitchell Marsh (60) the only other batter to pass 30.

Brydon Carse's 3-73 were the best figures for an England bowler, while Adil Rashid took 2-42 from his 10 overs, including his 200th ODI wicket, and Jacob Bethell finished with figures of 2-33 from his five overs.

This would be the sixth highest successful chase at Headingley, and England's third highest here.

It's rare territory for England. It's been six years since they have been set a 260-280 target to win in an ODI - by no means an enormous total, but a challenge for an inexperienced batting line-up.

Fantastic innings by Carey, England would have been very happy at 221-9 but there was a momentum shift. The game feels evenly poised, with the dryness of the pitch Adam Zampa will be very interested in the middle of the innings.

  4. Aus 270 all outpublished at 44.4 overs

    Carey c Salt b Stone 74

And Carey's innings comes to an end!

But not before hit a final four, smacking the ball through long-on.

Two balls later and he's gone, lifting the ball to Phil Salt at deep cover to finally depart for 74.

A final-wicket partnership of 49 - could that be crucial?

He's dived like he's diving full length into a swimming pool. It's an excellent effort.

  6. dropped catch

Carey dropped on 66published at 44.1 overs

    Aus 266-9

    Spilled!

Carey pulls and it's a tough chance for Jacob Bethell, running in from the mid-wicket boundary.

He dives forward to try and take the catch, but can't take the grab and the ball runs away for four.

Ugh. I hate watching England trying to get the last man out... it is always excruciating and they just cannot seem to do it with any urgency at all... I would almost guarantee these two to bat right to the end of the 50th over and then England goes in to their innings all frustrated and hot and bothered... So. FRUSTRATING.

As Australia build a tenth wicket partnership when will England bowlers learn. Surely the epitome of madness. From chasing 225/230 I can see Australia posting above 290/300 at this rate. One single and one boundary an over and that will add at least another 40 odd runs.

  8. Aus 262-9published at 44 overs

There's that fifth ball single for Carey, there's that sixth ball defence from Hazlewood.

  9. 6 runs

    Aus 261-9published at 43.1 overs

Matty Potts returns and Carey immediately lifts him over the boundary!

A short delivery, he gets up on his toes and muscles it up with a cross-bat over the covers.

    He moves to 65.

It's interesting seeing how much of a role Ben Duckett seems to be taking on in the field. There's a lot of dictating fielders, waving arms and chatting to Harry Brook.

This is obviously an inexperienced England team. It looks like he's stepping up into a leadership role.

  11. Aus 255-9published at 43 overs

The same pattern as the last few overs, as Carey takes a single from the penultimate ball.

Three of the last four, in fact - in the 41st over, Hazlewood was allowed to face two balls.

Indeed, in the six full overs since coming in, the Australia number 11 has only faced fifth or sixth deliveries, with Carey farming the strike well, facing 29 of 36 balls and moving from 33 to 59.

On this occasion Stone closes with a full toss and Hazlewood fends it away to third.

  12. 6 runs

    Aus 254-9published at 42.4 overs

    Clouted by Carey!

Olly Stone delivers a ball right in the slot and the Australian batter cleaves the ball over the long-off ropes and into the crowd.

Hazlewood is one of those annoying number 11s whose bat actually comes up and down in a straight line.

  14. Aus 248-9published at 42 overs

Carse concedes just two from his final over, a leg-side wide and a Carey nudge towards square.

He finishes with figures of 3-75.

As per usual, England's antipathy towards yorkers is driving me insane.

Carey sends the ball into the covers for a further single.

This last-wicket partnership is now worth 25.

    Aus 245-9

England bring back Will Jacks and Carey lofts him down the ground to bring up his fifty with a six.

    It comes off 46 deliveries.

  19. Aus 238-9published at 40 overs

Hazlewood closes out Carse's penultimate over by uppishly cutting the England seamer over point for four.

Short, and he got under it.

At what point does this 10th wicket partnership become irritating for Brook?
