One other reason for 11am starts was the extortionate cost of rail fares. The cheap day return doesn’t start until 9am on a weekday. So people are having to pay a fortune to get to grounds before 11am.

Ben Stokes has two slips in. His over, either side of that lengthy pause, alternates between singles and dot balls.

One more over before tea and it will be bowled by Chris Woakes.

We should start at 10:30am and then bowl the 90 overs. Simple as that. I would get guarantee that if umpires and the bowlers know that they have to bowl 90 overs then there is not a chance they would take so much time.

England surrendering the initiative here after a moment of inspiration from Stokes. They have to take two wickets with the new ball to get a lead and look nothing like as dangerous as India's bowlers with it. These two make it past the new ball and we're in real trouble.

  6. Ind 312-5published at 89.2 overs

Another shy at the stumps as Ravindra Jadeja looks for a single. The ball is picked up in the covers but the throw is off target. Buzzers.

The next ball of Ben Stokes' over strikes Nitish Kumar Reddy in the helmet. He's quickly back up to his feet but there will be a mandatory concussion test and a new helmet.

Anyone else think Woakes needs to retire from England duty? Not good enough and being shown up badly.

    Rhys, Swansea

  8. Ind 311-5published at 89 overs

The battling Nitish Kumar Reddy picks up a boundary as Chris Woakes loses his line. He diverts it fine for four and moves past 20 (23 off 72).

    Ravindra Jadeja has 37 (63).

England need that boost that they got before lunch with the run out.

  10. Ind 306-5published at 88 overs

Ben Stokes, collar up and running a hand through his hair, replaces Jofra Archer.

India collect three runs. Another over with the new ball safely navigated.

    We're drifting gently towards tea.

England pacers are getting more lateral movement with the second new ball than they did with the first. So far, in the first five overs, the average swing is 2.0° and movement off the pitch is 0.9° — both the highest of any 10-over interval in this innings. In comparison, the first ten overs saw just 0.4° of swing and 0.7° movement off the pitch.

  12. Ind 303-5published at 87 overs

India have seen off seven overs of the new ball without incident.

Ravindra Jadeja picks up a single off Chris Woakes.

    India trail by 85 runs

Jofra Archer to Nitish Kumar Reddy. Solid defence. A maiden.

This partnership between Nitish and Ravindra Jadeja is up to 48 off 113 balls.

Ravindra Jadeja has been involved in nine run outs in his Test career. He was out once and his partners were out on eight occasions.

My word, these two are writing a different script as far as running between the wickets are concerned. This was a yes, no, wait, maybe, another time.

  18. Ind 302-5published at 85 overs

Well, Daniel and friend, Ben Stokes heard your concerns and chucked the ball to Chris Woakes for the 85th over.

His first over of the session nearly brings a wicket but not because of his bowling. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Ravindra Jadeja think about another reckless single, set off, and then hesitate, leaving Nitish stranded halfway down the crease. The fielder misses the stumps. Another lifeline for India.

They finish the over with a much more sensible single.

If Woakes isn’t taking the new ball, why is he still in the side? Surely you bowl your swing specialist who has an excellent record at Lord’s and is supposedly leading the attack

    Daniel, London

If there is movement, then surely Woakes is a better bet with the new ball rather than Carse.
