If Joe goes past Ponting today I wonder whether the murmur of ‘Rooooot’ around the county might cause a detectable seismic tremor?

  2. Eng 301-2published at 67 overs

The first boundary since the 60th over as Ollie Pope hammers a straight drive past Anshul Kamboj, bringing up the hundred partnership.

Consecutive Pope twos then take England past 300.

Oliver: I don't think we're giving England nearly enough credit. Fantastic stuff for large parts of this series, including today. Being an England Test cricket fan has never been better.

  4. Eng 292-2published at 66 overs

Ollie Pope and Joe Root take a single apiece from the first two deliveries of Ravindra Jadeja's over, then Pope faces four dot balls.

66 overs done, and England trail India by 66. Joe Root, number 66, at the crease, averaging... just over 66 at this ground (67 as of 15 minutes or so ago, but who's quibbling?).

These two have batted really well. For India to get back into this game, it is imperative that they win today.

First hour and a half has not been that way and India's strategy has been baffling - Ravindra Jadeja comes into bowl an hour after the start of play and we still haven't seen Washington Sundar.

  6. Eng 290-2published at 65 overs

Ollie Pope takes another single towards mid-off from Anshul Kamboj's first ball, before Joe Root faces five dot balls.

    Rufus Bullough

This morning has seen just 0.37° of seam movement from the pace bowlers, the lowest figure for any session in the series so far.

  9. Eng 289-2published at 64 overs

A couple more singles to end Ravindra Jadeja's over.

We've got just over half an hour until lunch.

It's all part of the wearing down process, isn't it? Quick singles, ones to twos, when things are not going your way these things run you ragged and you pinch things that leads to over throws, it all helps.

    There's Ollie Pope's half-century!

He knocks a single off Ravindra Jadeja to pass 50 for the 25th time in Tests (nine of those are hundreds).

    It comes off 93 deliveries.

Sub wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel is standing up to Anshul Kamboj, but might that not be the best call?

Ollie Pope offers a small edge and it clips Jurel's gloves on the way to the ground - it would have been a remarkable take, and I'm not sure it would have carried had he been standing back, but perhaps we should call that a drop.

Pope then takes a single through point to move to 49.

    A great of the game.

  15. Eng 281-2published at 62 overs

A first sight of spin today, as Ravindra Jadeja comes on to bowl - he took 1-37 from eight overs yesterday.

As with the last over, Ollie Pope faces five dot balls then takes a single from the final delivery, pushing to mid-off.

Surely it can be no coincidence that the three leading English Test run scorers are ROOT, COOK and GOOCH? They have hundreds in the middle of their names. Spooky...

    Woops.

Ollie Pope knocks Anshul Kamboj's last delivery towards mid-on to deny the seamer a maiden, but Mohammed Siraj needlessly hurls down the stumps at the batter's end.

Wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel can only get a finger on it, and the ball flies away for five overthrows.

I can't believe that India haven't got a spinner on especially Washington Sundar after getting four wickets at Lord's. But that's not all on Shubman Gill as there might be someone from the backroom staff that passed a message along with the drinks to the players.

India haven't done the research well enough at Old Trafford. There's two things that work here - real quality spin or pace. Kuldeep Yadav should have been played and Prasidh Krishna bowls 10 mph quicker.

I have to say Jasprit Bumrah has looked okay and playable today. He hasn't got that oomph that he got out of the surface at Lord's when he bowled that incredible spell and it's the pace that Bumrah is not able to generate unlike Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer.

Root and Pope's stats on the scorecard are almost identical. It's also pleasant to see each batter contributing so far and wearing down India's attack, very different to what we saw at Edgbaston!
