Only Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar are ahead of Joe Root in terms of most runs in Test cricket and I am sure Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis would be pleased that they've been passed by a player like Root.

Up the rankings Joe Root goes!

Ollie Pope takes a fourth-ball single off Mohammed Siraj to bring his batting partner on strike, and Root immediately knocks the ball into the covers to take the single he required to move past Jacques Kallis and take third in the all-time Test run-scorers list.

Root now has 13,290 Test runs, he needs 120 in this innings to pass Ricky Ponting in second place.

'What a lovely shot!' - Root eases Bumrah ball through point for four

Lovely little back foot punch from Joe Root, sending Jasprit Bumrah's delivery out through backward point for four.

That takes him level with Rahul Dravid on the all-time Test run-scorers list and a further single through third takes him past the Indian legend and puts him level with Jacques Kallis.

One more single from Ollie Pope through backward square means England now trail India by fewer than 100 runs.

Just on that Root run-out chance. Why do fielders/bowlers/keepers never get to the stumps? The increased amount of direct hits has taken that out of the game.

Shubman Gill is only four games into his captaincy but you could make the case that the selection is very safe primarily because of not playing Kuldeep Yadav but that is also down the management and not just the captain.

    Another low delivery!

This pitch has seemingly become quite variable, and Mohammed Siraj finishes his over by getting another ball to pass the shins of a stumbling Ollie Pope.

I've been watching Bumrah's pace and it's not up to 88mph. I don't know if it's because of fatigue or if he's not got his rhythm. But this is a pitch where they should be looking to make serious inroads.

It is the kind of pitch India really should fancy, a little bit of low bounce, and sometimes it bounces really high. England have to bat the day and they are going to get another 300, aren't they? And that is pretty much the series done.

    Close to a run-out!

Joe Root faces five dot balls from Mohammed Siraj then sees the final delivery of the over spit up off the pitch and fly off his bat towards gully.

Ollie Pope calls his partner through for a run and makes it three-quarters of the way down the pitch, but Root hesitates and Ravindra Jadeja swoops down on the ball and fires at the non-striker's stumps.

His rapid throw is some way wide of the stumps, but Root would have been out by miles if there'd been a direct hit.

That's the fifty partnership from 97 balls.
