Well, that was over in a hurry!

To those of you who were hoping for a few hours of watching cricket after work, I hope Thursday brings you more luck - we will be here from 12:30 BST to bring you the coverage.

If you missed any of today's game, Matt Henry's match report from Headingley has got you covered.

    Bye for now!

  2. 'We were clinical with the ball'published at 17:42 BST 2 September

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma, speaking on Sky Sports: "Very important to start well, that's something we spoke about as a team, just to borrow from the momentum we got from Australia. A good start to the series.

"We were clinical with the ball. Even though they managed to put us under a bit of pressure in the powerplay, we still managed to take wickets. Then in the middle, the guys came in, Kesh [Maharaj] showing his class.

"With the ball, I don't think you can fault much. With the bat, we could have been more clinical at the end but I don't think it takes anything away from how we went about the chase, led by Aiden Markram at the top really taking the attack to them."

  3. Postpublished at 17:40 BST 2 September

Keshav Maharaj pips Aiden Markram to the player of the match award.

The spinner took 4-22 in England's innings with support from Wiaan Mulder's 3-33.

England don't have much time to turn this around, either.

The next ODI takes place at Lord's on Thursday.

  5. Postpublished at 17:35 BST 2 September

More from England captain Harry Brook, on how he wants his side to play: "Go out there and bang it, score as many runs as possible then go and take wickets as quickly as possible. Simple as that. Look to take wickets throughout then be aggressive with the bat and put pressure on their bowlers."

On the bowling performance: "I thought we bowled nicely. Obviously, Sonny Baker got a bit of tap at the start but the way he kept trucking in and giving 100% was awesome to see. That's exactly what we ask from our bowlers.

"At the end we almost used it as a practice session once we knew the game was dead. Lads were practising their skills.

"We travel down to London so we don't have much time, we have to put that performance behind us and crack on."

  6. 'It's a bad day - we have to move on'published at 17:32 BST 2 September

England captain Harry Brook, speaking on Sky Sports: "Not ideal. Not a great start to the series but just one of those bad days and we have to move on as quickly as possible.

"Everybody will hold their hands up and say they've had a bad day, really, apart from Jamie Smith - he batted really nice. But it's just one those days, we couldn't get a partnership together.

"The ball held in the pitch a bit more than usual but I don't want to go into too much detail, it's a bad day and we've got to move on."

On if the toss made a difference: "Hopefully we'd have bowled the same way they did. I thought they bowled really nicely and bowled us out cheaply."

Jamie Smith was the only bright spark in England's innings.

He scored 54 from 48 balls but Jos Buttler's 15 was the next highest contribution.

  8. 'We didn't expect England to fall that short'published at 17:25 BST 2 September

South Africa bowler Keshav Maharaj: "We didn't expect the England batters to fall short like that. The way we started, we put on a lot of pressure with the ball. The run-out was the turning point as Jamie Smith and Harry Brook were building pressure at that point."

On Aiden Markram: "That is the Aiden that we know, to take the game by its horns. We know the work he has been putting in behind closed doors so it is good to see it come to fruition.

"It was a long journey from Australia but a lot of momentum was carried from that series and we stayed true to our processes. Thursday is a new start and we hope to replicate what we have done today."

On the match at Lord's: "It is a new opportunity to start our processes again and we know how important these situations can be so hopefully we can go one better than England on the day."

It was a brutal debut for young Sonny Baker.

He got a golden duck with the bat, but in his defence there, he was in a hopeless situation after England's collapse.

But he finishes with 0-76 from seven overs, with Markram in particular targeting him ruthlessly.

England's heaviest defeats at home in terms of balls remaining...

    • 196 balls vs New Zealand, Chester-le-Street 2004

    • 188 balls vs India, The Oval 2022
    • 175 balls vs South Africa, Leeds 2025

As easy as you like from South Africa, despite a couple of daft wickets at the end.

They were only chasing 132, which was set up by Aiden Markram's sparkling 86 from 55 balls, while opening partner Ryan Rickelton anchored the chase with 31 from 59.

Brendon McCullum is a quality manager and he will manage this situation well. He will give some strong words and some things that the players do not want to hear but we are not in the era where teacups are thrown.

There is too much talent in this side. This is England's best top seven.

Launched down the ground for six and that is an absolute hammering.

Dewald Brevis survives the hat-trick ball.

It would be very on-brand for this young lad to win it with a six, though.

What are South Africa doing? That is the loudest cheer we have had from the Western Terrace today but there is an element of sarcasm to it.

    Stubbs b Rashid 0 (SA 131-3)

Surely even South Africa can't bottle this.

Tristan Stubbs also goes for a funky shot, trying to reverse sweep first ball, and is bowled.

Is Adil Rashid about to take the most pointless hat-trick in cricket history?

Temba Bavuma has fallen on his sword there. He won't be happy with that at all, he will have wanted to finish it off.

Interesting choice of shot with one run needed to win.

Temba Bavuma tries to do it in style by launching Adil Rashid over the off side, but he's picked out Will Jacks at mid-off.

It is in player's DNA to dive like that in the field. But if there was ever a time for Harry Brook to let a ball go for four it was then.

    Not quite.

Harry Brook dives full stretch to intercept a boundary and tumbles over the boundary sponge.

Please don't do a Chris Woakes, Harry. Please.
