A couple of quiet overs but South Africa have still completely dominated the powerplay.

Aiden Markram has 51 of their 67, and Sonny Baker has conceded 56 of them.

    Brutal.

  2. SA 65-0published at 9 overs

    Target 132

Just a single from Carse's first as England desperately approach the end of the powerplay.

That doesn't help things for Sonny Baker.

Brydon Carse is coming on which feels like the right move. Sonny Baker has been so expensive. That doesn't mean that this is the quality of player that he is; sometimes you just get it wrong on your debut.

  4. SA 63-0published at 8 overs

    Target 132

Just a single off another miserly Jofra Archer over as this phase of very contrasting bowling displays continues.

But Harry Brook has finally decided to give Sonny Baker some respite, turning to Brydon Carse instead.

In the search for context in ODIs, we look to qualification for the next World Cup. England are currently eighth in the rankings, with only the top eight (nine of hosts South Africa are one of them) qualifying for 2027 tournament.

After beating West Indies 3-0 earlier this year, England have a decent buffer over ninth-placed West Indies and even more over Bangladesh in 10th.

It is not a point to panic but one to be aware of. If England fail to qualify automatically they will end up in a qualifying tournament with the likes of Ireland, Scotland and USA.

    Wow.

Aiden Markram races to a 23-ball half-century and it is one of the classiest you'll see in ODIs, regardless of what the strike-rate suggests.

The ball has flown out the middle of his bat from the outset, including three delightful fours in this latest nightmare over from Baker.

Two pierced through the covers, one punched down the ground. Markram has enjoyed batting in England this summer...

    Shortest completed ODIs in England:

    • 191 balls - Australia vs USA, Southampton 2004

    • 217 balls - England vs Sri Lanka, Manchester 2014

All the runs are coming from one end at the moment as Jofra Archer has 0-5 from his three overs in comparison.

I need to drive home from Manchester to Cardiff after this so, very selfishly, at least a quick finish helps me out (if the M5 is kind).

Worth noting that SA are in good nick at the moment, and is England’s first international game of white-ball cricket in months. May have to write this one off - as miserable as many fans will be about that.

England could've had Ryan Rickelton out in the second over, by the way.

The good news just keeps on coming.

  13. SA 49-0published at 5 overs

    Four more.

Barely a nudge off the pads from Rickelton but it's raced to the mid-wicket boundary, again showing that this is a decent pitch and definitely not one to be bowled out for 132 on.

0-44 from three overs for Baker.

  14. SA 43-0published at 4.1 overs

    This is a tough watch.

Ryan Rickelton has barely been able to get bat on ball against Jofra Archer but the first ball he faces from Sonny Baker is too wide and drilled for four through the covers.

Aiden Markram has straight driven that with the full face of the bat. He didn't break his wrists at all.

He really is timing the ball beautifully.

  16. SA 39-0published at 4 overs

My word, Markram looks in good touch.

Ryan Rickelton can barely get bat on ball against Archer but his opening partner whips the first ball he faces from him off his pads for another effortless four.

It is an incredibly difficult situation for Sonny Baker on his debut. He needs to bowl the ball hard but has been put under so much pressure by Aiden Markram to hit the perfect length.

    Short, pulled for six more!

Aiden Makram is flying - he has 32 of South Africa's total and Ryan Rickelton is yet to get off the mark.

Sonny Baker has 0-34 from his first two overs in international cricket.

Yep, there's a clear plan to throw Sonny Baker off his rhythm early.

A wild swipe from Aiden Markram flies over backward point for six!
