Summary

  1. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 21.2 overs

    Buttler c Rickelton b Mulder 15 (Eng 119-7)

They'll be no rescue act from Jos Buttler today.

It goes from bad to worse for England as Buttler walks at Wiaan Mulder, tries to punch the ball towards extra cover but it nips back to take the inside edge.

Good bowling from Mulder and a regulation catch for Ryan Rickelton.

What have you got, Jos Buttler?

The former skipper is going to have play some knock to get England up to anything resembling a competitive total, you'd day.

Brydon Carse is out there with him now but it's not looking good for the home side.

That is loose and soft. Mid-on is up so Will Jacks was not trying to go there.

Keshav Maharaj got that grab in the surface. He is a wily operator.

What a low-key dismissal that was. A smart catch but not a difficult one.

    The crowd is dumbfounded.

    Not yet, Pete.

Chipped back to the bowler by Will Jacks. Soft in the extreme.

Tossed up by Keshav Maharaj and Jacks just tries to push it down the ground for a single.

But there's a hint of turn, perhaps it holds in the surface a fraction but Jacks just didn't really hit it. Had he gone harder at it, he probably gets it past the bowler.

Has anyone told England there’s another 30 overs to go in their innings?

Will Jacks batted brilliantly at Lord's in The Hundred final a couple of days ago and shows some of that touch with a powerful pull shot, in front of square for four.

Wiaan Mulder comes back well, though, with a ball on a good length that nips away to beat the drive of Jacks.

England find themselves in a similar situation to their Champions Trophy match against South Africa - they were 103-5 after 17.3 overs in Karachi, eventually finishing 179 all out.

There is so much time left in this innings and one more wicket and South Africa are into the bowlers.

Jos Buttler is still there, he's rescued England plenty of times.

In fact, perhaps my favourite innings of his was when he got stuck batting with the tail against Australia but batted patiently to score a superb century and complete a 5-0 series sweep.

That day, England were chasing little more than 200, though. They're going to need a lot more than that today...

Jacob Bethell's foot movement was non-existent on that dismissal. The ball was so wide of the off-stump.

South Africa have bowled really well so far.

That ball was there to be driven but after that break in play, it would have been better to leave it.

England are in a lot of trouble here.

  13. wicket

    Bethell c Markram b Maharaj 1 (Eng 107-5)

    Media caption,

Bethell gone for one after being caught at slip after flashing at wide ball

Another pretty soft dismissal and England are in bother.

First ball after a delay for the concussion check for Jos Buttler, a bit of width from Keshav Maharaj and Jacob Bethell goes at it.

No doubt it was there to be hit but there was no foot movement, he nicks it, the ball ricochets off the gloves of Ryan Rickelton and into the grateful hands of Aiden Markram at slip.

South Africa have been exceptional in the field so far after a below par showing during the ODIs in Australia, dropping seven of their 20 catching opportunities down under.

  17. Eng 107-4published at 18 overs

Jacob Bethell is the new batter and gets away with a single first ball.

Plenty of work for him and Jos Buttler to do and plenty of time to do it.

A boundary ends the over, Buttler attempting to hook Wiaan Mulder and the ball flicks off his helmet, over Ryan Rickleton and away for four leg byes.

A weak dismissal from Jamie Smith. He was trying to go between square leg and fine leg but he picked fine leg perfectly.

There was a lack of pace from Wiaan Mulder as well and it wasn't a simple catch in the field.

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 17.2 overs

    Smith c Bosch b Mulder 54 (Eng 102-4)

    Media caption,

Smith falls for 54 after being caught in the deep by Bosch

A tame dismissal for Jamie Smith.

The England flicks the ball off his pads but with no real conviction.

He lifts it down towards fine leg where Corbin Bosch comes around to take a good catch moving to his left.

Wiaan Mulder's first wicket of the day and South Africa find themselves in a strong position now.
