My esteemed colleague from The Times, Simon Wilde, who has a book coming out on Gilbert Jessop's record, has a wry smile on his face to my right.

Any publicity is good publicity but his book could have been out of date before it even came out.

Feeling a little bit flat after all of the Gilbert Jessop excitement came to nothing.

Harry Brook scored five runs off the 45th over, bringing up the 150 partnership in the process.

Washington Sundar's action looks like somebody rolling a tombola barrel.

Put your party poppers away. Gilbert Jessop retains his status as the scorer of England's fastest Test century!

Jamie Smith gets on strike for the final ball of the over but can only defend. 92 off 76.

  5. Eng 230-5published at 43.4 overs

Cries of "oh no" from the other side of the cricket desk as Jamie Smith defends a delivery from Washington Sundar.

He runs a single off the next ball to move onto 92 off 75. Unless he runs eight, Gilbert Jessop's record is safe.

  6. Eng 228-5published at 43 overs

Harry Brook is hogging the strike for the time being.

He pulls Ravindra Jadeja for four before running a single off the final ball. Hold your Jessops.

Gilbert Jessop is the current holder of England's fastest century, widely credited as being off 76 balls, against Australia at The Oval in 1902. He came during a similar situation to Jamie Smith, with England 48-5.

Of course, at that time, batters were only awarded four rather than six when the ball crossed the boundary without bouncing. Prior to 1910, six runs were only awarded for hits out of the ground. So Jessop's might have been even quicker.

A bowler as well as a handy batter, Jessop also took over 800 first-class wickets for Gloucestershire, Cambridge University and London County. He played 18 Test matches for England between 1899 and 1912.

  8. Eng 223-5published at 42 overs

Was there a chance for Washington Sundar there? Jamie Smith struck the ball right back at him and judging by the bowler's reaction, punching the ground in frustration, he thought there was a catch there. I think it dropped in front of him.

Jessop watch (76 balls): Smith has 91 off 73.

Jamie Smith is so good, just stands tall and holds his ground. He's been excellent today.

Washington Sundar, by contrast, is clearly tired of hearing about Gilbert Jessop.

Jamie Smith cuts him hard for four. That's 90 off 71.

  11. Eng 214-5published at 41 overs

Ravindra Jadeja reveals his membership of the Gilbert Jessop Appreciation Committee, forcing Jamie Smith to defend four balls before picking up a single.

    He's up to 86 off 70. It's advantage Jessop (76 balls).

We might be here for a little history which is always fun. Washington Sundar has a lot of work to do, the spinners are getting nothing at the moment really.

Spare a thought for Harry Brook. I can't be the only one who'd almost completely forgotten about him during Jamie Smith's onslaught.

The batters pick up a single apiece. Brook has 71 off 102. Smith, meanwhile, has 85 off 64.

Even Ravindra Jadeja is no match for Jamie Smith.

A four is swiftly followed by a monstrous six down the ground.

Smith has 84 from 63. Remember, 76 is the number to beat to become the new Jessop.

Only a fine diving stop from Mohammed Siraj on the boundary denies Jamie Smith a third successive four. He has to settle for two and a trio of dot balls.

Smith has 74 off 59 balls. Gilbert Jessop, the current holder of England's fastest Test hundred, reached three figures off 76 balls.

Jamie Smith has looked in such good form.

Looking at the field you wouldn't think that it's England under pressure here.

Shubman Gill does indeed turn to Washington Sundar and his first two balls are dispatched for four by Jamie Smith.

Anyone checked on Gilbert Jessop recently?
