Cute. Harry Brook finishes the 37th over down on one knee and sweeping for four.

    England trail by 399 runs.

The 100 partnership between Harry Brook and Jamie Smith has been brought up in 14.8 overs which is around 6.8 runs per over.

  5. Eng 184-5published at 36.2 overs

    Ooooh!

Harry Brook edges the ball towards the slips but it flashes quickly towards Shubman Gill who, falling backwards, has been grazed on the head.

Brook picks up two and after a quick check, Gill is okay to continue.

  6. Eng 182-5published at 36 overs

Prasidh Krishna sticks with his short stuff strategy.

The first five balls yield three singles before Jamie Smith gets hold of the final delivery and pulls it square for four.

I don't think this tactic is working.

It has been an exciting day of Test cricket so far. Harry Brook and Jamie Smith have done a good job of carrying on and getting runs after the dismissal of Joe Root and Ben Stokes early on.

I think India need to rethink their plan because they haven't been very effective against this partnership.

Just on the subject of Oasis and cricket, there's a great story during the recording of the band's second album, What’s The Story, Morning Glory.

Liam Gallagher "lost it" with his brother Noel after the former objected to him bringing a load of fans he had met in a pub to a recording session.

During the altercation Noel, ahem, retaliated by attacking his younger sibling with a cricket bat.

Now what was a cricket bat doing there. Well, Oasis bassist Paul McGuigan (better known as Guigsy) is an avid cricket fan so presumably he used to practise his straight drives with it between recording.

What became of the bat? Well a journalist by the name of Paolo Hewitt spotted it during an interview with Noel and, thinking it would end up in the bin, managed to keep hold it. Hewitt sold it at auction in 2011.

  9. Eng 175-5published at 35 overs

Tidy from Ravindra Jadeja with two singles from the over.

It's all action from one end and calm at the other.

Shubman Gill is sticking with Prasidh Krishna for the time being.

How often has Harry Brook been the measured, sensible one in a partnership?

This has been Jamie Smith’s joint fastest fifty in Test cricket (43 balls) and his joint third fastest in first-class cricket. A superb counter-attacking knock from England’s number seven. Smith has reached his fifty playing just 4.5% false shots - which is his third highest control percentage of any of his FC fifties. A knock of this speed and control is very rare.

It's another expensive over from Prasidh Krishna with 11 runs from it.

Will Shubman Gill turn to spin from both ends soon? He has Washington Sundar to call upon.

So much for neutralising the boundaries...

Much to Jamie Smith's delight, Shubman Gill sticks with Prasidh Krishna and he promptly spanks him for another six.

That is Jamie Smith's sixth 50 in only 11 Tests. He's had one century.

    Eng 162-5

Shubman Gill has installed the helmeted Yashasvi Jaiswal at silly point as Ravindra Jadeja enters the attack.

The boundaries from the previous over are neutralised but Jamie Smith still manages to pick up a single to bring up his half-century off 43 balls.

Michael Vaughan called for India to turn to Ravindra Jadeja just before that expensive over from Prasidh Krishna and his wish is Shubman Gill's command.

The first over after drinks will be spin.

India need to regroup. If they want to throw some bouncers they need to do it in between, they still have to be bowling good lengths.

Alreet 'r kid. We're going to roll with it today and mark a certain first gig tonight in Cardiff by producing an Oasis-themed Cricket XI. We're not looking for Champagne Super Over puns - more player related. Can we get a whole team on the park? Dominic Booth on our social media team has gone for Superson-Nick Knight and Rahul 'Wonderwall' Dravid. Another of our colleagues Alex Noble has gone for Cigarettes and KL Rahul. Over to you...

'Remarkable cricket' - England get 23 runs off one over

Prasidh Krishna won't want to see any of that again.

After starting the over with a dot ball, he's struck for four, six, four, four, four by Jamie Smith and even throws in a wide for good measure.

Smith has 49 off 38 balls while Harry Brook has 56 off 80. Ben Stokes is applauding. England trail by 427 runs.

It's time for drinks and time for India to regroup.
