Jamie Smith reaches 184 in England's first innings against India

  1. Eng 116-5published at 27 overs

I'm keen to watch the start of the Tour, Tim!

Jamie Smith, however, doesn't appear to be a cycling fan. He's started brightly, scoring a run-a-ball 21, and is being rewarded handsomely for his drives, adding a third four to his tally.

Nothing wrong with England’s batting. They’re exhausted because a toothless bowling attack kept us in the field for 140+ overs. We need to sort out the bowling configuration before the third Test, and certainly before the Ashes.

I’m just trying to think of why Ben Stokes is actually in the team? I know he is captain and has scored runs and taken wickets in the past, but that is what it is in, the past! At the moment he can’t score and doesn’t offer a lot bowling and he can’t even get the toss call right after getting lucky in first Test.

If we look at the first Test, when England came out against Jasprit Bumrah they had a plan. If we look at yesterday, it looked like they didn't. It's almost like they don't rate India's other bowlers and think they can take a swing at everything.

After a dramatic first 10 minutes or so, it's started to settle down at Edgbaston as Jamie Smith and Harry Brook try to rebuild England's innings.

Smith takes a single off the 26th over. England trail by 478 runs.

Tremendous start from India. Unlucky by Joe Root but the ball that got Ben Stokes out was a Jaffa. India have played really well and disciplined so far this morning, it couldn't have gone better.

Tom Marlow: Ben Stokes has had an absolute shocker this Test. Arrogant call at the toss subjects his men to two hard days in the field and then goes for a golden duck. Lessons to be learnt from this Test match!.

Callum Michael: Hopefully in the autopsy from this match England will see some sense that they can’t just be mentality monsters and have to play the conditions better. Fine, they love to chase but this was never ever a bowl first pitch no matter what Shubman Gill said he would do!

Thomas Banks: I hope Stokes learns from his poor decision making, I doubt he will but we can hope because that decision at the toss has cost us a big chance of going 2-0 up. Poor fielding from India is what’s saved him from being two down going to Lord's.

I like Jamie Smith. He's a big imposing player.

  8. Eng 108-5published at 25 overs

Warm applause around Edgbaston as a single from Jamie Smith brings up England's 100.

He gets the strike back later in the over and bludgeons a shorter delivery from Akash Deep through midwicket for four before running three off the final ball.

So far, so good for this Smith-Brook partnership.

Cunning plan by England: get bowled out cheap, India enforce the follow on, England get a big total meaning India have a tough chase on the final day.

I was at day five of Headingley. I was very optimistic coming into this game. I won't pretend England are in this. But I will suggest, in hushed tones, that it's not Bazball per se that has caused this, but the lack of fit and penetrative bowlers. 150 overs in the field has done a number on them. They don't have that same energy and focus. There is some mitigation. They will probably have to reconsider going forward about bowling first just so their bowlers can rest more.

Ben Stokes does not have the same presence with the bat anymore.

Harry Brook was like a cat on a hot tin roof last night. He's looking a lot more comfortable today.

He bookends the 24th over with fours - the first driven through the covers, the second clipped off his hip.

    10 runs off the over.

I'm still surprised that India aren't attacking more. You'd expect another slip in place at least.

    Perfect start for India.

Harry Brook takes a single off the first ball of the over and Jamie Smith safely defends the next five deliveries.

Given England's batting struggles, it feels like a good opportunity to share a cricket-related dream I had a few nights ago.

I was trying to identify cricket in literature, film, TV etc. A few immediately came to mind - Lionel Tribbey's cricket bat in West Wing, Arthur and Ford landing in the middle of Lord’s on a Chesterfield sofa in a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy sequel, and of course an excellent Dad’s Army episode.

I then found myself defending why I thought John Le Mesurier/Sergeant Wilson, and not Zak Crawley, should open the batting alongside Ben Duckett.

I wonder how Sergeant Wilson would fare against this India attack...

Stokes’ troubles against India continue. Across 43 innings he averages just 24.40 against India with a solitary hundred. Only against Pakistan does he average less (20.20 - 21 inns).

That was Ben Stokes' first golden duck in Test cricket.

  17. Eng 88-5published at 22 overs

Well, that's woken us all up, hasn't it?

If you want some good news, England's deficit is now below 500... they trail India by 499 runs. Ok, maybe it's not good news...

    Stand down. No hat-trick.

Jamie Smith dispatches him through mid-off for four. England breathe a sigh of relief.

That is a wonderful delivery. Ben Stokes, before he knew it the ball was in front of his throat. What a start from Mohammed Siraj.

That was a terrific delivery! It was quick, it bounced, first ball. England in a mess here now. Mohammed Siraj is capable of this, fantastic first ball, there's absolutely no shame in that for Ben Stokes.
