'Fine piece of bowling!' - Ngidi bowls Buttler

  1. SA 55-0published at 11 overs

A tighter over from Brydon Carse, going for four singles before finishing with two dots.

Meanwhile, while it is a little grey presently, we're now out of the most dangerous hour without incident and the forecast suggests we should get a full game in.

Coldplay: Uninspiring, middle-of-the-road fluff. Let's hope our performance today doesn't mirror that.

    Nick, Bournemouth

Was going to a Coldplay concert England's punishment for the performance at Headingley? If so, seems a bit harsh to me.

Some lovely straight drives coming from both ends.

When you bowl around the wicket as a bowler, you bowl full and that angle is coming straight at the batter so it leans into playing more straight drives.

  5. SA 51-0published at 10 overs

Ryan Rickelton faces all of Saqib Mahmood's fifth over and adds a pair of driven fours to his tally.

He sends the opening ball past mid-on, then goes past mid-off from the penultimate delivery to bring up South Africa's 50.

The next delivery goes straight to the fielder - no run there, and that's the end of the powerplay.

Would be interesting to compare the DRS success rate of different England captains. Strauss, Cook and Morgan always seemed to be level-headed, but nowadays they send even the most half-hearted of appeals upstairs.

Good pace here from Brydon Carse and nice bowling around the wicket to Rickelton.

South Africa are trying to increase the pace slightly as the ball is getting softer and not quite doing as much.

Archer run out attempt goes for five overthrows after hitting stumps

This over isn't para-para-paradise for Brydon Carse, with his first ball chipped down the ground by Ryan Rickelton for four.

The opener then takes a single to Jofra Archer at mid-on just beating a direct hit at the non-striker's end and seeing the ball jag off for four further over-throw runs.

Also, you'll be pleased to know that's about the limit of my Coldplay knowledge.

Saw the England team out at Coldplay last night - makes a change from the golf course I suppose…

Max, hoping for a better performance today

There has been just one run off Saqib Mahmood's last 13 deliveries.

Saqib Mahmood has looked good so far. He has found movement both ways and has struck the batters in and around the thigh pads.

He has certainly troubled the South Africa openers.

  13. SA 34-0published at 8 overs

Still Saqib Mahmood at the other end and he sends down a maiden to Aiden Markram.

The opener has scored 17 off 33 balls today, while Ryan Rickelton has 14 off 15.

I might be in the minority here but to me it just never feels quite right watching white-ball cricket at Lord's: a bit like if you end up in a nightclub after a wedding still wearing your suit.

Conditions at Lord's have offered more movement both through the air and off the pitch in the opening five overs of the match compared to Leeds.

    Average swing - Lord's 1.05°, Leeds 0.85°

    Average seam - Lord's 0.90°, Leeds 0.68°

England have bowled well. There was some seam movement from Archer and Mahmood but South Africa have weathered the storm.

There have not been too many boundaries or free hitting but they will just be happy to be no wickets down.

A first change for England as Brydon Carse replaces Jofra Archer at the Pavilion End.

Ryan Rickelton whips his first ball for four through mid-wicket, but the seamer does beat the left-hander's bat later in the over.

England are still to find that crucial edge though...

We've had people who've watched Aiden Markram at Hampshire and in the Bolton League so far today - can we collect a full set of teams?

Indeed, has anyone faced him in backyard cricket?

Aiden Markram had a stint at Hampshire in 2019 before the start of the World Cup. He was sheer class. Such a shame that the ICC denied us the services of him, Vince and Dawson in the final of the 50-over Cup competition even though the World Cup hadn't yet started.

Saqib Mahmood did use that change of angle to the left-hander and managed to find the outside edge, but South Africa are managing to keep all their wickets intact.
