  1. New ball=faster runs for Warwickshire's tailpublished at 11:28 British Summer Time 23 August

    Warwickshire 314-8 v Somerset

Kiwi Michael Rae has raced to 14 off seven, taking boundaries at will off Craig Overton with the new ball which has slightly ruined the skipper's otherwise buoyant mood this morning.

Josh Davey earns a few dots and even plays and misses from Chris Rushworth (who somehow still has as many Durham first-class half centuries as Ben McKinney!)

Even Rushworth is striking at more than a run a ball.

  2. Postpublished at 11:25 British Summer Time 23 August

    Yorks 9-0 v Sussex 189

Nice start by Adam Lyth, who eases England's Ollie Robinson through mid-off for four in the opening over of Yorkshire's first innings.

Jaydev Unadkat will share the new ball after returning to Sussex for the final five games of the Championship campaign.

  3. Division Two updatepublished at 11:22 British Summer Time 23 August

Tight bowling by Gloucestershire in the initial stages at Bristol, but Leicestershire have advanced by five runs to 296-7 in the 73rd over.

Harry Came hits two successive fours off Ned Leonard as Derbyshire advance to 142-2, just 26 behind Glamorgan's first-innings total. He is 74 not out and Wayne Madsen has 48.

  4. wicket

WICKET: Bethell b Davey 64published at 11:19 British Summer Time 23 August

    Warwickshire 287-8 v Somerset

Wow, the two set batters who looked so at ease last night are both gone in quick succession before the new ball is even available this morning.

And what a sight that is, Jacob Bethell's stumps spattered across the Edgbaston track as Josh Davey gets one to come back into the left-hander.

James Rew fortunately is wearing a helmet stood up so does not risk that terrible Mark Boucher injury of the bail to the eye we saw at Taunton a few years back.

  5. wicket

WICKET Roderick c Finch b Jordan 60published at 11:18 British Summer Time 23 August

    Worcs 154-3 v Kent 171

How shaken up was Gareth Roderick by that blow on the hand in the previous over?

He departs as Akeem Jordan finds the edge and keeper Harry Finch does the necessary - the Barbadian paceman's second wicket for his new club.

Adam Hose is the new Worcestershire batsman.

  6. ouch!

Postpublished at 11:17 British Summer Time 23 August

    Worcs 154-2 v Kent 171

    Where did that come from?

George Garrett finds extra lift from just short of a length and strikes Gareth Roderick a nasty blow on the fingers.

In the chaos, a shy at the bowler's end misses as Rob Jones back up too far.

Roderick will be ok to soldier on but is fortunate when a leading edge flies down to point and he moves to 60 not out with three runs.

  7. wicket

WICKET: Burgess c Rew b Overton 69published at 11:16 British Summer Time 23 August

    Warwickshire 287-7 v Somerset

    Massive wicket for Somerset.

    Michael Burgess looks very disappointed.

After all my build up, 59.87 he averages, the second highest (from a minimum 50 Championship innings) batting at number eight since 1990 (the highest being David Nash's 70) he is gone before the new ball is taken this morning.

Lovely outswinger from Craig Overton and another cracking catch stood up from James Rew, back in the limelight to rival his younger brother's viral clips from his recent centuries.

  8. wicket

    Surrey 86-1 v Lancs 204

Dom Sibley is dismissedImage source, Rex Features

And it's Will Williams who makes the breakthrough!

He gets one to jag back sharply on Dom Sibley who's shouldering arms and is given lbw!

Height is the only thing that can save him but he's struck on the back pad in the crease - it looks a fair decision.

  9. wicket

WICKET Hunt lbw Thompson 1published at 11:12 British Summer Time 23 August

    Yorks v Sussex 189

So Division Two leaders Sussex are only able to prolong their first innings by 11 balls at Scarborough.

There will again be no century for Tom Alsop, who is left 86 not out as Sean Hunt plays across the line to Jordan Thompson and is leg-before.

How will the Yorkshire batters fare on this pitch?

  10. WICKET Das lbw Abbas 5published at 11:11 British Summer Time 23 August

    Hants v Essex 7-1

Poor Robin Das, that is almost unplayable.

Mo Abbas gets the ball to nip in, stay a little low and cannon into the batter's shins. Plumb.

  11. Postpublished at 11:10 British Summer Time 23 August

    Surrey 86-0 v Lancs 204

A couple of singles apiece for Rory Burns and Dom Sibley off debutant left-armer Josh Boyden and Surrey are up and running for day two.

After New Zealander Will Williams, it's a very inexperienced Lancashire attack.

Even Indian all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer, 29, has only played 20 first-class matches.

By contrast 23-year-old George Balderson already has 42 games under his belt.

  12. wicket

WICKET: Parkinson lbw Stone 4published at 11:09 British Summer Time 23 August

    Durham 397-6 v Notts

Nightwatcher Callum Parkinson is gone in the second over of the morning.

England Lions skipper Lyndon James took the first over, but Olly Stone bounces back early from his leaky bowling yesterday.

Bas de Leede is some man to come in at number eight, sliding down a spot due to Parkinson's last night promotion, seriously competing with my claim for Michael Burgess being the best number eight in the land...

  13. Postpublished at 11:06 British Summer Time 23 August

    Hants v Essex 1-0

Mo Abbas takes the new nut and within three balls has it singing.

Facing up is Robin Das on just his second Championship appearance, and first time opening. Talk about the deep end. He negotiates it well.

Das is getting his chance instead of Nick Browne or Feroze Khushi after finding a bit of form in the One Day Cup - including a century against Notts.

  14. Postpublished at 11:06 British Summer Time 23 August

    Yorks v Sussex 188-9

Because of yesterday's rain, we are going to have 104 overs today at North Marine Road - in theory.

Tom Alsop has passed 50 five times this season without registering a century. Can Sean Hunt stay with him long enough to enable him to do so this morning?

Alsop picks up a single off Matthew Revis and is 85 not out.

  15. Postpublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 23 August

    Warwickshire 277-6 v Somerset

Craig Overton, stand-in skipper again for this game in Lewis Gregory's absence, takes the first over, just warming up for the new ball in now three overs time after his first six went for just one streaky four.

The two Bs both in the 60s, former Gloucestershire loanee Jacob Bethell 60* and wicketkeeper Michael Burgess 67*.

Josh Davey will take the second over of the morning, the successful Bob Willis Trophy opening pairing, likely to bowl the first four with the old ball then the first few with the new ball this morning.

  16. Postpublished at 11:04 British Summer Time 23 August

    Worcs 140-2 v Kent 171

Akeem Jordan will bowl the opening over for Kent.

After a tidy start, he strays onto the pads of Rob Jones and is clipped through mid-wicket as Rob Jones adds three to the total.

  19. Lancashire hoping to 'bounce back'published at 10:54 British Summer Time 23 August

Surrey 83-0 v Lancashire 204 (play due to start 11:00)

Division One leaders Surrey have laid the foundations for another victory after a successful opening day against an inexperienced Lancashire side at The Oval.

They bowled the Red Rose out for 204 - with Jordan Clark taking 4-57 against his former club - and openers Rory Burns and Dom Sibley survived 21 overs to the close without being parted.

"Four-day cricket is all about bouncing back. It gives everyone opportunities and that's what we need to do now," said Lancashire head coach Dale Benkenstein.

On the first Championship innings of 16-year-old Rocky Flintoff, who made 32, he added: "It's a tough place to make your debut on a pretty sporty wicket and he looked really good, so that was a real positive."

  20. Burgess makes Somerset toil againpublished at 10:50 British Summer Time 23 August

    Warwickshire 277-6 v Somerset (play starts 11:00)

    Michael BurgessImage source, Getty Images

After a rain-delayed start, Somerset inserted Warwickshire on a green looking surface that did not turn out to be quite so green by the time Rob Yates and Alex Davies were permitted to take guard on it.

The opening partnership of 52 was only bettered by the unbroken partnership of 112 between Jacob Bethell (60*) and Michael Burgess (63*).

Burgess hit Jack Leach into the stands with ease last night, again scoring runs for fun vs Somerset, further proving his claim to be the best number eight in the country.

Somerset made a late call to prioritise a fourth seamer in Josh Davey over the part-time spin option of Sunday's semi-final centurion Lewis Goldsworthy, will they regret that today or will Andy Umeed maybe come to the fore as a second spinner on his old home turf?
