  1. Notts bowlers suffer after pitch mis-readpublished at 10:48 British Summer Time 23 August

Durham 393-5 v Notts (play due to start 11:00)

It was pretty much all one-way traffic on day one at the Riverside as Durham made Nottinghamshire's decision to ask them to bat first after winning the toss look seriously misguided, piling up 393-5.

Openers Alex Lees and Ben McKinney - the latter just 19 years old - hit centuries and Ashton Turner will resume on 62 not out, doing a highly effective job of deputising for David Bedingham.

Lyndon James took 3-56 for Notts, but they need early wickets this morning or could face the prospect of Durham posting a 500+ total.

"The pitch wasn't quite what we were expecting. We thought it would offer a bit of nip and pace but it was a little bit on the slow side and wickets weren't easy to come by," he told BBC Radio Nottingham.

Just 24 hours later than originally scheduled, there's been a toss at the Utilita Bowl - Hampshire won and will bowl with blue skies overhead.

The pitch is green (a cursory glance at the colour charts would suggest a sage green, perhaps asparagus) and after an extra day under the covers the likes of Mo Abbas, Kyle Abbott and John Turner will be licking their lips.

Worth noting though that this fixture last year saw Hampshire deducted three points for a "below average" pitch - with 20 points still suspended over them until the end of this season.

  3. Kent hope pitch can help fightbackpublished at 10:43 British Summer Time 23 August

Kent need something special from their bowlers on day two at New Road in a game they cannot afford to lose, with Worcestershire's Gareth Roderick set to resume on 53 not out..

They began 25 points adrift of the Pears at the bottom of the Division One table and were bowled out in under 50 overs despite having been 73-0 on the opening morning.

"It's an interesting pitch, almost a mirror in both innings, how it played. Once the heavy roller wore off and the lacquer came off the ball a little bit, it started to do plenty," head coach Matt Walker told BBC Radio Kent.

"In the last hour and a half with the ball, plenty of chances were created (by us). We bowled well enough for a few more dismissals but it wasn't to be."

  4. Chappell spell puts Derbyshire on toppublished at 10:39 British Summer Time 23 August

Derbyshire pace bowler Zak Chappell insisted "the past is irrelevant" after they dominated the opening day against Glamorgan.

They have won a home Championship game against the Welch county since September 2019 but bowled them out in less than 48 overs as Chappell claimed 6-47.

"It was a hybrid pitch, with a bit of bounce, and we can’t have asked much more on day one so we’ll bat as long as we can now," he told BBC Radio Derby.

“They weren’t easy conditions and we were rusty in the red-ball game, so we didn’t deal with it as well as we can do," Glamorgan skipper Sam Northeast admitted.

It's fourth v third at the Utilita Bowl and despite no play being possible on day one, both sides surely still believe they are close enough to have a say in the title race over the remaining weeks of the season.

Hampshire will have to manage without all-rounder Keith Barker, who took 13 wickets in the two Championship matches in late June/early July.

Essex have Jordan Cox available following his release from the England Test squad - and he will continue his battle with team-mate Dean Elgar to be their leading Championship run-scorer this season, just four runs separate them at present.

  6. Weather outlookpublished at 10:33 British Summer Time 23 August

"Today will see rain clear east, leaving sunny spells for most, but also showers in the north and west. Windy to start for southern and central areas, but easing a little later. Breezy further north."

That is the current BBC Weather summary - looks like we could be in for a few interruptions like yesterday.

The opening day of the latest County Championship games was by and large a good one for bowlers - although those toiling away for Notts at the Riverside yesterday will not agree.

A total of 68 wickets fell in eight games - there was no play between Hampshire and Essex - so will that trend continue on day two?
