    Leics 4-0 v Kent

It's not Corey Flintoff just yet. Joey Evison bowls the first over for Kent at Grace Road with Rishi Patel on strike.

There's a little bit of swing there and a thick edge for four to third man is the first scoring stroke.

As well as today's County Championship action, there is also a semi-final in the Women's One-Day Cup.

The Blaze are taking on Lancashire at Trent Bridge, with the winners to play either Hampshire or Surrey in Sunday's final, which will take place at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton.

Lancashire have been put in to bat and you can follow scorecard updates here.

Twenty-seven points is a lot to make up over the course of two County Championship matches but at least Warwickshire can have no doubts about what is required to keep alive their slimmer than slim title hopes.

They have to beat Essex and really take maximum bonus points, otherwise they are relying on the weather to intervene more on their rivals than themselves.

The trouble for the Bears is they now have one day less to achieve this.

Essex were in trouble earlier in the season - hammerings at Worcestershire and Yorkshire had them too close to the relegation zone for comfort - but it would take a cruel turn of events for them to end up in Division Two.

Warwickshire have won the toss and will bowl first after naming the same side which drew at Surrey last week.

Seam bowler Charlie Bennett makes his first-class debut for Essex in place of Shane Snater.

  5. An outside bet at Bristolpublished at 10:22 BST 16 September

Gloucs v Northants (Play to start at 10:30 BST)

There's an outsiders outside chance of Gloucestershire gatecrashing the promotion race but they're going to need the plot line of a Disney movie to do so.

Firstly they have to beat Northamptonshire in three days.

But when you've only won one match all season but still find yourselves in with a shout of going up you get the idea of just how unlikely it might be.

Stranger things have happened but I just can't think of one right now.

An unchanged home side have won the toss and are going to have a bowl at sunny Bristol.

Ben Sanderson, and Rob Keogh replace Liam Guthrie and Ricardo Vasconcelos for the visitors.

  6. Nice to see you again. How was your weekend?published at 10:19 BST 16 September

    Somerset v Hants (10:30 BST)

Somerset captain Lewis Gregory celebrates T20 Blast win

Rain and wind may have kept these two teams apart on day one but they could not put off the reunion following Saturday's T20 Blast Final permanently.

And if the stakes were high at Edgbaston where Somerset pulled off that thrilling record run chase, they are stacked again at Taunton with the hosts not yet mathematically out of the title race.

True, the Cidermen, who have won the toss and will bat, would need all the planets and stars to align with a big win over Hampshire and the same against Essex in the final round.

In addition they would need probably a 'minimal-bonus points' draw between Surrey and Nottinghamshire and then hope both lose in their final games against Hampshire and Warwickshire, respectively.

Unlikely? Almost certainly, but then again rabbits have been pulled out of hats by this team before and fresh from their T20 Finals Day smash and grab they will be giving it a good go if the weather allows.

Six of the side who pulled off that record chase at Edgbaston are in the squad with Lewis Gregory, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Craig Overton, James Rew, Ben Green and Lewis Goldsworthy doubling up.

Hampshire have drawn their last five but are by no means out of the woods with the pull of relegation a real threat. They currently sit just six points ahead of Durham in the second of a two-team drop zone.

Three of those Hampshire players who played in the final return here including Toby Albert, Ali Orr and James Fuller.

Who will have the bigger hangover from the weekend? They have both had 24 extra hours to get over it but we will see.

  7. Flintoff makes first-class debut for Kentpublished at 10:16 BST 16 September

Leicestershire v Kent (play starts 10:30)

Kent have won the toss and chosen to bowl first at Grace Road.

Promoted Leicestershire have been forced to make a change with Louis Kimber replacing Ben Mike, who picked up an injury against Gloucestershire last week.

The bottom-of-the-table visitors give first-class debuts to Corey Flintoff, elder son of former England all-rounder Andrew, and Oliver Curtiss - both of whom appeared in the One-Day Cup.

  8. Toss delayed at Old Traffordpublished at 10:15 BST 16 September

    Lancs v Middx

Unlike the rest of the country which seems largely to be getting under way on time this morning Old Trafford remains covered up after further rain this morning and the skies overhead gloomy.

  9. Worcs vow to keep fighting for away winpublished at 10:13 BST 16 September

Worcestershire will take heart from a positive performance that pushed Notts all the way at New Road last time, but with Division Two beckoning it is all about taking momentum from this game, with day one already lost.

The Rapids, who have been put in by Durham at the toss, have made the final of the One Day Cup which takes place this weekend at Trent Bridge – Hampshire are the opposition – so the bottom-placed team are hoping for a first win on the road at Durham to boost morale.

Seamer Ben Allison is certainly not giving up on a positive end to a difficult season insisting the squad have shown great togetherness throughout a testing campaign.

“We have kept fighting and stayed together and that is a massive part of what we pride ourselves on," he said.

“This is another big game for us and we will look to start with the same energy and fight we had against Notts and hopefully put it all together to get a result.”

Their hosts are in a tricky position, too, fighting to escape the second relegation place with realistically four other teams from Essex in fifth place to Hampshire in eighth.

Durham arrested a slump as they avoided a third straight defeat last time out when drawing with Essex.

  10. Derbyshire need to make up for lost timepublished at 10:10 BST 16 September

Derbyshire v Glamorgan (play starts 10:30)

Yesterday's weather ruined opening day at the County Ground was arguably a bigger setback for Derbyshire than Glamorgan.

The third-placed home side need to win this game as they are 27 points behind the Welsh county in the race to claim the second promotion spot.

Wayne Madsen has won the toss and opted to put Glamorgan in, hoping that his seamers can do the business with the new ball.

Amrit Basra makes his first-class debut for the home side, while Glamorgan are without all-rounder Ben Kellaway because of injury.

  11. Relegation worries add fuel to Hove clashpublished at 10:08 BST 16 September

Sussex v Yorkshire (play due to start at 10:30)

John Simpson led Sussex to promotion last season

There is still a lot riding on this game at Hove despite no play being possible on day one with neither team safe from the threat of relegation.

If next-to-bottom Durham beat Worcestershire, the loser of this match could find themselves in a dogfight to avoid the drop next week, when Yorkshire host the north-east county and Sussex visit the Pears.

Sussex skipper John Simpson and James Coles are one big score away from reaching 1,000 runs for the season in their final home game of the season at Hove, but they will be in the field first after Yorkshire won the toss and chose to bat.

The Tykes hope India batter Mayank Agarwal will have better luck this week after registering a first-ball duck in last week's draw with Somerset at Taunton.

  12. 'Stopping them getting batting points is a big tick'published at 10:05 BST 16 September

    Surrey 43-1 v Notts 231

Surrey are on top going into the second day of this top-of-the-table meeting in Division One.

Matt Fisher starred with the ball at The Oval, taking 5-61.

"We’ve stopped them from getting any batting points so that’s a big tick for us, and now we have to focus on our own batting effort," he said.

“I was purring at mid on watching Gus Atkinson (4-41) bowling. To be able to watch people as good as Gus from up close is amazing.

“I’m obviously also pleased with the way I bowled. It’s been decent on some occasions this season but sometimes I’ve felt lacking in a bit of nip and getting injured up at Scarborough a month or so ago was not ideal.

“But I’ve worked my way back and it felt good and that nip was there again.”

Ben Slater top scored in the Notts innings with 50 and thinks they're still in with a chance.

“It was a big wicket to get just before stumps, because Dom Sibley is the division’s leading run-scorer this season, though two wickets would have been better!

“I think we’ve seen that the ball has nipped around and bounced a little bit from a good length, so as batsmen you never really feel in," said Slater.

  13. How's the weather looking?published at 10:02 BST 16 September

The BBC Weather summary says: "Blustery, but not as windy as yesterday for most. Fewer showers, with more places staying dry."

That sounds a lot more promising, let's hope any showers will be brief.

Well that was quite a non-day of county cricket yesterday - except for the small matter of the top-of-the-table clash at The Oval.

Surrey gained the upper hand against Notts, thanks to some accurate - and destructive - bowling by Matt Fisher and Gus Atkinson, but the visitors did nip out Dom Sibley late on.

Elsewhere, strong winds and rain put paid to any play, so we now have eight three-day games on our hands - which may mean those with promotion and relegation concerns having to recalibrate their plans.

Welcome to our coverage of day two. Play starts - we hope - at 10:30.
