  1. 'For now, the rain is the winner'published at 17:30 British Summer Time 24 July

    Sussex 204 & 245-7 v Essex 504

    Dean Wilson
Daily Mirror cricket correspondent on BBC Radio Sussex

This would be a really important win for Essex, as they have had such a difficult season so far in 2025.

This win would be a much appreciated and well received boost if they were to get over the line, but they are not there yet.

They have got a 55-run lead over Sussex. So, there is still a bit of work needed from both sides, but for now, the rain is the winner.

  2. wicket

WICKETpublished at 17:26 British Summer Time 24 July

    Quinn c Root b Carlson 0 (Glamorgan 327 v Kent 155 & 359-9)

All of a sudden Kent are nine down.

It's all gone downhill rapidly for them since tea but what a great little spell this has been from Glamorgan captain Kiran Carlson who has 3-24 from five overs.

Italian international Grant Stewart, unbeaten on 63, is running out of batting partners.

Kent have built up a lead of 188 but it looked like they could have got more the way they were going earlier before this collapse.

A second century in four Hampshire innings for India batsman Tilak Varma.

He does look the real deal who we'll probably see on the big international stage very soon.

Varma's century comes from 203 balls with 13 fours and two sixes.

  4. Postpublished at 17:25 British Summer Time 24 July

    Derbys 86-3 v Leics (target 446)

Caleb Jewell (41*) and Brooke Guest (17*) are fighting hard to keep Derbyshire in the game against the Division Two leaders.

I think we can forget the target of 446 by the way!

  5. rain stops play

Rain stops playpublished at 17:23 British Summer Time 24 July

    Sussex 204 & 245-7 v Essex 504

Sussex lost four wickets for 26 runs in that session after tea but rain has taken the players off.

James Coles is left dangling on 99 not out.

  6. Northants lose two wickets in two ballspublished at 17:21 British Summer Time 24 July

    Middlesex 625-8 dec v Northants 261 & 21-2

Earlier this afternoon Middlesex bowler Ryan Higgins took two wickets in two balls in Northants' first innings and he's just repeated the feat in the second.

Ricardo Vasconcelos only added a single after those two early fours and then Aadi Sharma departs first ball to give Higgins six wickets in the match.

It's tough for Northants out there, it has been all day - they are still 343 runs behind.

  7. Kent lose three quick wicketspublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 24 July

    Glamorgan 327 v Kent 155 & 339-8

What was that we were saying earlier about Kent needing to keep their concentration?

Well, they've just lost three quick wickets, starting when Harry Finch's fine innings was ended on 68 by Kiran Carlson.

Matt Parkinson then departed after four balls without scoring and Wes Agar has just gone too.

That's three wickets in three overs for just six runs.

  8. 'Leicestershire don't give away runs'published at 17:14 British Summer Time 24 July

    Derbys 189 & 83-3 v Leics 398 & 236-9

    Richard Rae
    BBC Radio Leicester Sport

I have said this a lot this season if Leicestershire are not taking wickets they don't tend to give away runs.

That means when they do start taking wickets again, if they do? They will remain in a very strong position.

  9. Postpublished at 17:11 British Summer Time 24 July

    Glos 381 & 66-0 v Lancs 557

Ben Charlesworth, 160 earlier today, is very fluent again and has 46 in 52 balls.

Captain Cameron Bancroft there on 18 and the pair have made a fine start to Gloucestershire’s follow-on.

    They still trail by 110.

  10. 300 runs

300 up for Hampshirepublished at 17:09 British Summer Time 24 July

    Hants 300-5 v Notts 578-8d

    They are grinding away.

    Up comes the Hampshire 300.

We still have 30 overs remaining in the day.

  11. Postpublished at 17:09 British Summer Time 24 July

    Warks 184 v Worcs 333 & 222-8

The second new ball is now available for Warwickshire.

They wouldn’t have thought it would have been necessary when the eighth wicket was taken in the 61st over.

But Ethan Brookes goes on, he’s now 70, and Adam Finch, 2 from 35 balls, is providing great support.

  12. wicket

WICKETpublished at 17:05 British Summer Time 24 July

    Jacks c Wharton b Bess 17 (Yorks 517-6d v Surrey 194-3)

Yorkshire have a third wicket - and still with a massive lead.

Will Jacks is the third batsman to make an error has he gets there too soon trying to turn Dom Bess to leg and pops up a catch to short mid-on.

29 overs left in the day. Ryan Patel still there on 36.

  13. Northants follow-on beginspublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 24 July

    Middlesex 625-8 dec v Northants 261 & 8-0

The rain has subsided and the players are back in action as Northants begin the follow-on.

And it's a bright start from Ricardo Vasconcelos who sends Ryan Higgins for two fours in the opening over.

Northants will need plenty more where that came from.

  14. wicket

WICKETpublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 24 July

    Carson c Walter b Critchley 1 (Sussex 204 & 238-7 v Essex 504)

    Oh dear...

Jack Carson gets a short one from Matt Critchley and pulls it straight to Paul Walter at mid wicket.

This might not last much longer.

Sussex still trail by 62 runs.

  15. 'Calamitous run out' puts Essex back in controlpublished at 16:55 British Summer Time 24 July

    Sussex 204 & 237-6 v Essex 504 - Sussex trail by 63 runs

    Victoria Polley
    BBC Essex Sports Editor

This has been a really strong half-an-hour since tea for Essex.

They were frustrated by the 141-run partnership from Tom Alsop and James Coles in the afternoon session but a bit of fortune, including a calamitous run out, means three wickets have fallen already in the evening session and Essex have reinforced their control over this match.

  16. wicket

WICKETpublished at 16:49 British Summer Time 24 July

    Hudson-Prentice c Harmer b Critchley 9 (Sussex 204 & 236-6 v Essex 504)

    Sussex are collapsing.

Fynn Hudson-Prentice drives Matt Critchley confidently down the ground for four runs but three balls later he lofts the ball to Simon Harmer in the covers who dives to his right to take the catch.

That's a third wicket to go down since tea and the home side still trail by 64 runs.

  17. 'A catalogue of errors'published at 16:49 British Summer Time 24 July

    Sussex 204 & 236-6 v Essex 504

    Adrian Harms
    BBC Sussex

    That is absolutely ridiculous!

That is two wickets gifted since tea.

Initially, John Simpson was looking at James Coles to say, 'look lets take an over throw here'. He was looking for the over throw and Coles said 'yes', but I think the ball was already in the fielders hands.

Simpson looked at Coles as if to say it's your fault - but it was a catalogue of errors by the pair.

  18. 50 runs

50 partnershippublished at 16:44 British Summer Time 24 July

    Hants 284-5 v Notts 578-8d

Tilak Varma strikes a beautiful four and moves to 88 not out.

It also brings up the 50 stand with Felix Organ (26*)

  19. wicket

WICKETpublished at 16:40 British Summer Time 24 July

    Simpson run out 2 (Sussex 204 & 221-5 v Essex 504)

    Calamitous from the home side.

Sussex take a single but the throw evades the fielder backing up and James Coles turns for a second - John Simpson is slow to react and is left stranded.

    Awful cricket from Sussex.

  20. 'The light is getting worse'published at 16:39 British Summer Time 24 July

    Sussex 204 & 216-4 v Essex 504

    Adrian Harms
    BBC Sussex

I would imagine Essex are just keen to stay on the field and bowl their spinners for the next 20 overs.

The umpires seem quite content that the lighting is all good for now, the light seems to of got worse over the past few minutes and the umpires will have to keep a close eye on this.

At tea I didn't think we were going to get much more play time today.
