    Sussex 92-4 v Essex

James Coles is going to take the attack to Essex.

He hits the first ball of a Sam Cook over for four and then from the penultimate ball slices him away over the slips for another boundary.

Sussex have scored 23 runs from the opening three overs after the break.

    Robinson c Rew b Overton 0 (Somerset v Durham 33-4)

A great start for Somerset in the first over of the afternoon session.

Ollie Robinson had been spilled by Craig Overton at second slip just before lunch but the bowler makes amends getting his edge with the fourth ball.

  3. 'Familiar face Barnard biggest threat to Pears'published at 13:26 British Summer Time 22 July

    Lunch: Warwickshire v Worcestershire 67-3

    Mike Taylor
    BBC WM commentator

After choosing to bat, Worcestershire batted with an air of suspicion throughout a murky first session, as if braced for a nasty surprise.

As it turned out, the biggest danger was no surprise, but an all-too-familiar face.

Ed Barnard’s first intervention against his former county was to almost run out Jake Libby, but after remonstrating with himself for not hitting the stumps from extra cover, he immediately made amends by taking Gareth Roderick’s outside edge.

He also accounted for Kashif Ali, pushing limply across a straight ball, while Ethan Bamber’s reward for a long spell came when an out-swinger touched the edge of Libby’s bat as the opener pushed forward.

Heavy clouds hovered as the players left for lunch, but might have seemed darker from the visitors’ dressing room.

  4. Still raining at Hampshirepublished at 13:24 British Summer Time 22 July

    Hants v Notts 20-1

We have been off since around 11:45 (BST) at Utilita Bowl and the players took an early lunch.

Sadly it is still raining and there is no sign of a resumption any time soon.

    Fingers crossed everyone...

  5. 'Pretty even session at Cheltenham'published at 13:23 British Summer Time 22 July

    Lunch: Gloucestershire v Lancashire 82-2

    Scott Read
    BBC Radio Lancashire

Captains Cameron Bancroft and James Anderson have enjoyed Ashes battles in the past but came together at 10.30 this morning at Cheltenham College. Has a knight of the realm ever played at the festival before?

What resulted was probably a pretty even morning, the wicket of Keaton Jennings on the stroke of lunch might have even balanced the session.

The threat offered by Australia spinner Todd Murphy might further support Lancashire’s decision to bat first.

They’ve opted for the extra spinner, with both Tom Harley and Chris Green playing.

Meanwhile Merchant de Lange has only bowled two overs and is clearly struggling with an injury.

    Sussex 73-4 v Essex

It must have been a good lunch for James Coles as he laces Khaleel Ahmed's third delivery through the covers for four.

A lot rests on Coles and John Simpson for Sussex.

    Sussex 69-4 v Essex

Good news - the rain has stopped and the players are heading back out after taking an early lunch,

Bad news - the skies are darkening and we will do well to avoid a further interruption.

A very good morning for Essex - winning the toss and deciding to bowl in overcast conditions on a pitch offering some help to the seamers.

Sam Cook, Jamie Porter and Khaleel Ahmed have exploited the conditions to the full, but they have been helped by some loose shots from the Sussex top order.

James Coles has again looked in good form and Sussex will be hoping that both he and skipper John Simpson can instigate a recovery.

  9. 'Somerset should have had four'published at 13:17 British Summer Time 22 July

    Lunch: Somerset v Durham 33-3

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset

Somerset have not quite made the most of winning the toss and choosing to bowl on a well-used pitch, which is green in the middle and dusty at the ends.

I say ‘not quite’ because although they have picked up three wickets, they should have had a fourth, Craig Overton, of all people, missing Ollie Robinson in the slips just before a heavy shower dictated an early lunch.

Still, three wickets with the dreaded Kookaburra in the space of nine overs is good going.

    Glocs v Lancs 82-2

Todd Murphy's wicket, removing the well set Keaton Jennings 10 minutes before lunch has just tilted this game back level at the end of the first session.

Lancs will be happy enough with 82-2 despite losing both openers and their hosts will believe two wickets on a pitch not offering a right lot is a decent return.

  12. Lunch in Division Twopublished at 13:08 British Summer Time 22 July

A fine morning for Middlesex at their Northwood outground as they reach 90-0 against Northamptonshire.

Sam Robson has 35 and Max Holden has gone past him to 39 after being asked to bat this morning.

Kent get to lunch two down, after being put in by Glamorgan, on 111-2.

Joe Denly had to retire hurt but captain Daniel Bell-Drummond has 24 off as many balls in adding an unbroken 30 with Chris Benjamin.

  13. Lunch at Edgbastonpublished at 13:05 British Summer Time 22 July

    Warwickshire v Worcestershire 67-3

Adam Hose gets his second four off the penultimate ball of the session, bowled by Ed Barnard as Worcestershire get to lose three down.

Those two wickets from Barnard, coupled with one from Ethan Bamber, probably have the Bears ahead after the first session.

  14. wicket

    Jennings c Hammond b Murphy 32 (Glos v Lancs 75-2)

Keaton Jennings was not happy with that decision, the batter believing that Miles Hammond has scooped that off the turf at slip off the spin of Todd Murphy.

Difficult to tell whether that went straight to hand but Hammond appeared confident he had taken it cleanly and the decision is out.

Jennings has a word or two with Hammond and the huddle of celebrating Glos players after finally consenting to walk.

That could have gone very wrong, very quickly for the Division Two leaders as they lost openers Rishi Patel and Sol Budinger without a run on the board after winning the toss and deciding to bat.

But Rehan Ahmed (82*) and Lewis Hill (36*) went on the attack to take control.

Ahmed is closing in on a fifth first class century and a second successive one in the championship.

  16. Postpublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 22 July

    Warwickshire v Worcestershire 63-3

Australia all-rounder Beau Webster is back in Bears colours for the first time since May.

He played in the World Test Championship and then all of three his side's 3-0 win in the West Indies.

But he's not quite got it right in his three overs in gloomy Birmingham as he overpitches and Brett D'Oliveira gets four.

  17. Lunch at Tauntonpublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 22 July

    Somerset v Durham 33-3

The sandwiches are being taken at Taunton and they will taste pretty good to Somerset after rain forces an early lunch.

After a late start, a green seamer has done what Lewis Gregory hoped it would at the toss when putting Durham in.

The visitors have lost three big wickets and could have been in more bother still had Craig Overton held on to a regulation catch at second slip off Ollie Robinson.

  18. rain stops play

Lunch at Scarboroughpublished at 12:51 British Summer Time 22 July

    Yorks 82-0 v Surrey

Bit of confusion as the umpires call an early lunch in response to literally just a few spots of rain.

Adam Lyth (34) and Finlay Bean (45) are marching off as a few brollies go up in the stands but Jamie Overton is gesturing to the officials questioning why they are stopping.

The covers are on despite the rain having stopped and they really should be still out there. Bizarre decision.

    Play will resume at 1.28pm

  19. Retired hurtpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time 22 July

    Glamorgan v Kent 93-2

Kent are still only two down but Joe Denly has had to retire hurt.

He looked to have pulled something as he went for a single, immediately clutching the back of his left leg.

Captain Daniel Bell-Drummond is now in instead of Denly.

Rehan Ahmed acknowledges scoring a 50 for Leicestershire against DerbyshireImage source, Rex Features

Rehan Ahmed (69*) and Lewis Hill (31*) came together at 0-2 with both the openers removed in a stunning opening burst by Derbyshire.

The Leicestershire duo have gone on the attack and wrestled control back after they had won the toss and suffered those two early blows.

Impressively, there have been no extras so far.
