Summary

  1. Pak 249-5published at 86 overs

Jack Leach bowled a few rippers this morning but he's still waiting for one with this new ball to really turn.

    Four overs to go.

Muhammad Rizwan has got to knuckle down for the remaining overs.

He is playing one loose shot an over and it gives England a glimmer of hope that they will get another wicket.

  3. Pak 245-5published at 85 overs

    Rizwan 27, Salman 1

I originally thought that ball had turned between bat and pad as Kamran Ghulam had a swing. On second viewing, it skidded on and beat the outside edge.

Either way it's a wicket for Shoaib Bashir who has struggled at times.

Salman Ali Agha, one of Pakistan's centurions from the first Test, emerges with just over 20 minutes to play.

England were delighted there. How they'd love another...

Kamran Ghulam has been patient all day.

Once he got his 100 we saw a few more loose shots. He comes down the pitch and it turns a little bit hitting his off stump - he will be furious with himself.

He could have gone into tomorrow not out, but he's given it away.

    Got him! Shoaib Bashir strikes.

Kamran Ghulam has been so, so good but has just had a bit of brain fade at the end of the day.

He comes charging down, doesn't get to the pitch, misses and has his leg stump knocked back by one that turns from England's off-spinner.

That has still been a superb debut innings.

What I like about the pitch is its offered more for the bowlers. It has been a good contest between bat and ball.

  8. Pak 243-4published at 84 overs

Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith continues a tidy day behind the stumps by flying to his left to take one that flicks Muhammad Rizwan's thigh pad.

There have only been seven scoring shots in Brydon Carse's 11 overs today. Superb.

Big difference in Muhammad Rizwan's performance against the pacers and spinners today.

He's struggled to score runs and played false shots far too often against the quick bowlers, while he's scored quickly and looked very secure facing the spinners.

    Rizwan - today

    • v Pace - 3 runs, 33 balls, 40% false shots
    • v Spin - 23 runs, 37 balls, 5% false shots

Aggers is purring about Brydon Carse on TMS. He really has been impressive today. Strong, quick and skillful.

Remember this is only Carse's second Test.

There's half an hour or seven overs left in the day.

Joe Root is laughing at Muhammad Rizwan. It was a horrible shot.

The ball is hitting those cracks and moving around laterally. Rizwan is trying to fight fire with fire.

  12. Pak 239-4published at 82 overs

    Ghulam 114, Rizwan 26

Matthew Potts could not have done much more there.

A maiden that doesn't tell the whole story.

  13. Pak 239-4published at 81.3 overs

Eeesh. How has Potts not started with a wicket here?

Muhammad Rizwan is beaten twice and then attempts a wild swipe with his head seemingly scrambled.

Based on Cricviz's expected score measure (think xG in football), Pakistan have overperformed today - they should be 217-7 at this stage. It's been a good fightback from the hosts after a turbulent first day, but also an indication that this isn't the worst pitch in the world.

Carse's Durham team-mate Matthew Potts is going to share this new ball...

  16. Pak 239-4published at 81 overs

If England can take a couple of wickets here they will have probably edged the first day. If not then it will got to Pakistan.

Ben Stokes only has one slip for Carse who thuds the ball into the pitch from a height. One delivery nips past the edge as Ghulam gropes.

The new ball didn't do anything for the seamers earlier in the day. If anything it died in the pitch.

  18. Pak 235-4published at 80.1 overs

England have taken that new ball but the first delivery with it is driven back past Brydon Carse for four by Kamran Ghulam.

Pakistan were 19-2 when Ghulam came in.

Brydon Carse has been outstanding, a real addition - he has run in hard.

Shoaib Bashir has not had his best day today. He bowled one ball in the last over with the perfect line and it had good length.

  20. Pak 235-4published at 80 overs

    Ghulam 110, Rizwan 26

Six runs in Joe Root's over probably seals any doubts Ben Stokes might have had about taking this new ball.

Brydon Carse, who has been superb today and has only just finished a spell, looks to be limbering up.

This could impact that over rate Freddie mentions.
