Well, that single has puts to bed the theory that India wants right-hander at one end and a left-hander at the other. This is what Archer wants - a left-hander. He averages 14 against them.

  2. Ind 203-3published at 82 overs

Jofra Archer takes the new ball at the other end and starts with a loose, relatively slow short ball and Shubman Gill dispatches it with a pull shot over the ropes at square.

That brings up India's 200, and a further single - an outside edge through point - takes Gill to 97.

Thought Brydon Carse might be the bowler to replace Ben Stokes as he can run wide of the crease and hit the same spots that Stokes did.

Edged - just short of third slip!

Chris Woakes' draws a push from Washington Sundar with his third delivery but there's not enough carry to reach the cordon.

A maiden to start the seamer's spell, bowling round the wicket.

  5. new ball

    Ind 198-3published at 80 overs

Liam Dawson takes the last over before the new ball is available - sending a maiden to Shubman Gill.

And England will take new cherry straight away - 12:20 BST, just as I predicted!

Chris Woakes is going to have it - Ben Stokes' mighty eight-over stint comes to an end.

Ben Stokes seems to get more out of the pitch that anyone else. It might not seem that quick on the speed gun but the ball carries very well to the wicketkeeper and it looks a whole lot faster to the eye.

Does he get a go with new ball? He has got so much of the ball which is 75 overs old so surely he could give himself a chance with the new ball?

Ben, what are we doing here?

He has a hand to his back before starting his eighth over, and closes his eyes in a bit of pain after sending down his first delivery.

Washington Sundar gets two through mid-wicket later in the over, its only scoring shot.

Stokes puts his jumper on rather awkwardly at the end of the over - his last? You wouldn't absolutely count on it...

  8. Ind 196-3published at 78 overs

    Oh, hello.

Washington Sundar drops to a knee and slogs Liam Dawson's last ball over mid-on.

The ball loops high but plugs and stops on the outfield short of the boundary ropes - the batters didn't race off, so only get a single as Chris Woakes throws in.

Ben Stokes is in front of me at long-ish on now. He has just barked in frustration at himself, or his situation.

Prior to that he was propping himself up with Ben Duckett.

  10. Ind 194-3published at 77 overs

Ben Stokes keeps going into the second hour, taking the first over after drinks.

He strikes Shubman Gill on the gloves again, but the India captain then manages to get off strike with a single into the covers.

  11. drinks break

    Ind 193-3published at 76 overs

No runs for 17 balls now as Washington Sundar doesn't score off Liam Dawson's over.

The players will take drinks after the first hour of the session.

Even the security guard in the stand at fine leg is telling me he wants Stokes to come off.

The good thing for India is that the captain looks to be fine, he seems to have overcome the blow to the hand. The first few balls didn't look comfortable but he seems to be fine now.

Ben Stokes sends down a maiden to Shubman Gill.

Here's how the England captain made the breakthrough and ended the 188-run partnership between KL Rahul and Shubman Gill.

    Superb stuff.

Washington Sundar sends Liam Dawson's first ball to long-on for two then doesn't score off the rest of the over.

Ben Stokes is going to drag his ailing body through another over.

  16. Ind 191-3published at 73 overs

Shubman Gill is good to continue, although having defended the second delivery of the over he walks away shaking his hand.

Replays showed a bit of Gill's helmet fly off when Stokes' first delivery hit it - it was a brutal ball.

A maiden for the England captain, having sent down another delivery that kept low and forced Gill to hurry through a defence.

Ben Stokes’ spell this morning is registering a 9.7/10 on PitchViz’s bounce inconsistency rating.

Of all of Ben Stokes' 300 spells of four overs or more in Tests’, we’ve never seen a higher bounce inconsistency rating.

Ben Stokes is simply inevitable, there is no other word for him. Every time you think he has nothing left to give he puts his team on his back and delivers the goods. Exactly what a captain is there to do.

That is a seriously nasty delivery, it has gone from glove to the side of his helmet and then ricocheted off his forearm. Nasty delivery. The concern from the England players is because of the fact that it hit his helmet and nearly toppled over the stumps.

    Ouch!

Ben Stokes will continue - and with no half measures.

His first delivery lifts off the pitch, strikes Shubman Gill on the glove and then his helmet grille.

The India captain sprawls a bit, and on come the physios to offer treatment.
