It is an interesting phase in the game. The pitch is settling down and it might slow down a bit more as the game progresses.

India will be vying 600 now.

    Average swing/ seam for quicks...

    • Day 1, Session 1 - 1.68/ 0.59
    • Day 2, Session 1 - 0.69/ 0.64

The England pacers have found less swing than on day one. However, they extracted more seam movement this morning compared to yesterday.

They targeted the stumps 10% of the time in session one of day one; this morning, it’s just 6%. They bowled 71% of their deliveries on a good length then, compared to just 50% this morning.

I wish India still had Rohit and Virat playing. We may have been able to get those two out. These two look like they could bat until Sunday.

Nothing especially expansive from Stokes' over - Pant attempts a big-ish shot square from the penultimate delivery, but ends up sending the ball to mid-on for a single.

The gulf between the two sides so far epitomised in two attempts at gymnastics. Pant's somersault has Harry Brook's cartwheel covered.

A mis-hit from Pant and Brydon Carse has gone over the boundary. A nigh on impossible catch.

Pant is looking mighty dangerous now.

  8. Ind 426-3published at 100 overs

    Top-edge... and safe!

Pant cuffs the ball into the leg side where it lands safe.

You get the sense he's not going to hang about now.

    And another one!

Pant launches Bashir down the ground - it's aerial, he didn't get all of it, and Brydon Carse is chasing back to try and take the catch on the ropes.

However the Durham seamer fails to get his hands on the ball as it comes over his shoulder and it lands just over the ropes for six as Carse crashes into the hoardings.

    Won't he, Cheteshwar, won't he?

Rishabh Pant brings up the hundred with a mighty six, launching Shoaib Bashir's first delivery deep into the Western Terrace.

He celebrates with a forward flip too - entertaining in every aspect.

Rishabh Pant looks a lot calmer now. He will try to rotate the strike and take a single for his century. He won't go for a big shot.

It says much about how well the first hour went for England that one of the most memorable moments was Brook taking a blow to the ribs.

Pant knows that Ben Stokes can bowl a slower ball so he knows to expect that. His bat lift is not going too high. And it has not deceived him yet.

  16. Ind 413-3published at 99 overs

Ben Stokes continues after drinks - he sends down a dipping full toss that Pant fends to point for a single.

That takes him to 99, and he shares a joke with Stokes as he reaches the non-striker's end.

Gill then edges just in front of Ben Duckett at gully.

People can argue until the cows come home. The bottom line is this - with a weak bowling attack, under blue skies, with it being the opposition's first Test series in this country in four years, England decided to bowl, and India are 400 for 3. The end.

    Peter

Hate to day it but this first Test is already gone for England. Absolute best we can hope for is a draw. Not the best start to the summer.

    Phil

To all the positivity merchants - complacency is the reason England are so far off it. That's complacency from the players with their carefree Bazball, and the fans who mistake expectations and high standards for criticism.

Rishabh Pant played within himself throughout his innings yesterday and then he totally came out of his shell when England took the new ball. You never know what he is going to do. An enigma.

Here's that roly-poly ramp from Rishabh Pant.

The India wicketkeeper is on 98 at drinks - he's been out seven times in the nineties in Test cricket, and will be keen to get out of them today.

Meanwhile Shubman Gill is sat calmly on the floor eating a banana.

The England bowlers are trying to find a way to keep the India batters quiet. Both of Pant and Gill have been off to a flying start, and the pace they are scoring at is a lot higher than yesterday.

They will get to 500 today.
