One thing I was wondering about overnight is the scrutiny on a captain that wins the toss, chooses to field, and it goes wrong. There must be any number of examples of captains batting first, only for their team to be rolled over, yet they aren't nearly as infamous.

Shubman GIll makes it look so easy when he times it. There are quite big gaps in the field. I'm not sure what Chris Woakes was trying to do to Gill in that over or how he was planning to get him out.

  3. Ind 389-3published at 93 overs

Simply eased away by Shubman Gill, working Chris Woakes' final delivery down to the ropes at third.

England's fielders give chase but the ball beats them to the boundary.

@Ruth but surely if you know you have a depleted bowling attack you look to give them as much help as you can. Bowling in 30 degrees of sunshine by choice is the complete opposite.

Shubman Gill has melted that. A beautiful front foot wide drive and Zak Crawley did outstanding to dive and get a hand on it.

  6. Ind 380-3published at 92 overs

Cracking cut from Shubman Gill off Carse, with Zak Crawley doing well to cut the ball of and restrict the India batters to two.

The approach and mindset of India, you can clearly see it to see off the first 45 minutes. They want to give themselves a chance and create that platform.

Earn the right and capitalise later on.

How beautiful to see Pant batting again in his typical style after his accident. All cricket fans can find some joy in that.

A lovely dab through the slips. Beautifully played from Pant, a little bit too wide from Carse at the moment.

Four for Pant off Carse's first ball, managing to find the gap between slips and gully.

    That's the 150 partnership up.

England's depleted bowling line-up would have been exposed regardless of whether they bowled first or second.

The PitchViz Bounce Inconsistency rating (higher = more inconsistent) for day one of this Test match is 3.0/10 - the second-most consistent rating for a day in Leeds, after 1.9 on day one in 2021.

Interestingly, India batted that day too and were all out for 78.

Woakes again, and he sends down a solid maiden to Gill.

The Warwickshire seamer has figures of 0-93 in this innings from 21 overs.

We saw everything in that over. A wild swipe, a hook for four. Typical Pant playing, he is an extraordinary cricketer.

359 is the most amount of runs England have conceded on day one of a Test since the Oval in 2003.

Oooh, a big waft from Rishabh Pant, advancing down the pitch to Carse's first delivery and failing to connect when attempting to heave into the leg side.

He gets bat on ball two deliveries later, hooking away finely for four.

Carse ends his over with a ball that almost draws Pant's edge.

Off to Abbeydale in a bit to ‘watch’ my niece and sister play hockey. Think I’ll be watching the 2nd XI and listening to TMS with a beer and sun cream. Wickets please.

You always start your day with the best two bowlers from the previous day. Stokes was by far the best bowler yesterday.

He is such a good man manager but sometimes he looks after everyone else before he decides it's his turn.
