It doesn't do much to help them now as India move past 400 but the data indicates that England have actually bowled a bit better than this score would suggest.

Based on the balls they've bowled, CricViz has India's expected score at 305-9. You can decide whether it's a case that the home side have been a little unfortunate or the tourists have just batted extremely well, or both...

A nice line of bowling from Bashir here. He has bowled with good control, one of the best I have seen him actually.

    Gill 144, Pant 98

    Ouch!

Pant takes a quick single off Bashir's final delivery and Ben Duckett takes a shy at the stumps from short third.

Harry Brook has pre-emptively hit the deck to get out of the way, but Duckett manages to wang the ball into his team-mate's back.

Brook jogs off for some treatment, while the players will take drinks.

I don't like thinking this, but this really does have all the makings of a classic England car crash kind of a day.

Simply divine. A stunning stroke from Shubman Gill. That needs to be clipped up for the highlights.

  7. Ind 409-3published at 97 overs

Changes at both ends for England as captain Ben Stokes replaces Chris Woakes.

Shubman Gill offers a textbook drive to his fourth delivery, sending the ball through extra cover for four.

Rishabh Pant will be aware of how many times he has got out in the nineties. The nervous nineties are a real thing.

    Ind 404-3published at 96 overs

That's the way to bring up your side's 400!

Pant heaves Bashir's penultimate delivery over mid-wicket for six, moving into the nineties in the process.

He slog sweeps for a single off the final delivery, retaining the strike.

Has Rishabh Pant just invented a new shot - the roly-poly ramp?

'Almost a roly poly' - unorthodox Pant scoop flies over leg slip and away for four

England bring Shoaib Bashir into the attack to replace Brydon Carse.

Pant falls into a scoop to the spinner's first delivery, allowing him to get the elevation to lift the ball over leg slip for four.

    Funky!

It looks like an umbrella field on the off-side which we often see when Ben Stokes wants to go with reverse swing.

Shubman Gill said that they would have bowled, the stats say clearly to bowl, we have had lots of success in the past chasing… the pitch is flat whether we bat or bowl first, so I think that criticising Stokes’ decision with the benefit of hindsight is unfair and frankly sums up fickle England fans.

I think we are all jaded by the many many years of England batting collapses in the past. We either have India reaching 550, and England batting to a draw now. Or India reaching 550 and England 30-3.

Rishabh Pant has such a good eye, he has all the time in the world when he is playing. He is wonderful to watch and his best format is traditional Test cricket.

He will have his time dominating in white-ball cricket as well.

Rishabh Pant didn't know that it was going to be short from Carse. He didn't quite time it right but he rolled his wrists and helped himself to a four.

    He looks so nonchalant.

  19. Ind 393-3published at 94 overs

Here comes Rishabh Pant again, dancing down the pitch to Carse's first ball.

He hacks a pull down through backward square and it manages to beat Ben Duckett on the ropes and go for four.

The only scoring shot of the over.

If India get through the first hour unscathed you have to say the momentum is theirs for the day ahead. England really need 1-2 scalps asap to turn the tide
