This is the perfect time to bring in Ravindra Jadeja. There is some turn on the pitch and India desperately need a wicket here.

Can't have been many attacks where the stand out bowler is so much better than the others. Hadlee for NZ?

A cunning shot from Root. Thakur gave him enough width to run the ball off the face of the bat as the 50 partnership comes up.

  4. Eng 181-2published at 42 overs

And Root gets his own four through third, guiding Thakur's delivery through a gap.

That's the 50 partnership between this pair.

Root follows that by hustling through two leg byes with the ball running square, and it's a no-ball from Thakur to boot.

Runs are coming quickly and easily for England at the moment. It has been their day today and India will reflect tonight on why they didn't make it to 500.

Pope was the obvious choice and he’s shown it here today. Invaluable member of the team

Nicely done from Ollie Pope - Krishna's delivery is short and tight to the body, but the England batter fends it off well with a late cut that sends the ball through third for four.

A further pulled single takes him to 85.

Shardul Thakur dismissed Joe Root twice in the 2021 Test series. In the first Test at Trent Bridge for 64 and then bowled for 36 at the Oval.

It will be interesting to see how Shardul Thakur will bowl. He plays a big role in this side as a seamer who can bat a bit. He has to bowl well in these conditions.

  10. Eng 165-2published at 40 overs

    Here he is, Cheteshwar!

Ollie Pope pushes Thakur's final delivery out to the point boundary where Ravindra Jadeja runs round and fails to stop the ball with his foot, seeing it run onto the boundary sponge.

The fact that we have not seen Thakur yet shows that perhaps Gill is not very confident in using him. It is surprising that Jadeja bowled before him, I thought he would have had a few overs already.

There was a bit of swing from Prasidh Krishna to Ollie Pope there. He is bowling a better spell from the pavilion end. He is getting the ball to pitch up and is hitting that six to eight metre length mark.

It is much better from him.

  14. Eng 157-2published at 39 overs

Consecutive twos for Pope off Krishna, pulling the ball square and then inside edging out to long leg.

He then cuts to point to move to 74 from 100 balls.

What England would give to have a Bumrah-esque bowler that put the fear into batters. Amazing how his spells are dominating the narrative and run-rate.

Joe Root is starting to look more confident now. He looked tentative at the start but he is hitting much better positions now.

  17. Eng 152-2published at 38 overs

150 up for England as Joe Root turns Mohammed Siraj away through mid-wicket for two.

The shadows are lengthening at Headingley - play is set to run until 18:43 BST assuming they get through the day's overs.

They won't do that by then, we could conceivably extend by a further half hour if conditions allow.

India have been so much better after tea, but can someone grab the game by the scruff of the neck? Someone except Bumrah?

    Eng 147-2published at 37 overs

    Now now.

Joe Root deflects Prasidh Krishna's penultimate delivery back down the track and the India seamer flings the ball back at the England batter, striking him around the boot.

Not sure the run-out was on there, Krishna raises a hand in apology.

    The players will take drinks.
