Proper Test match cricket. That's why it's still the best form of the game.

Can’t believe I’m saying this in the Baz-Stokes era but a traditional day of Test cricket.

  4. 'Joe Root has inspired everyone'published at 18:52 British Summer Time

Ollie Pope speaking to Test Match Special: "I just got asked what par was and I have no idea. Pretty slow pitch, not one that you always felt in on. I think ending the day 251-4 is pretty good. Slightly different to the way we usually put together an innings, but we'll take it.

"I managed to face 100-odd balls, but made a pretty annoying error after tea. It's annoying not to be 90-odd not out with Joe at close, but I can take positives."

"We want to be a team that is positive and entertaining, but we want to play to the situation. Our order is pretty fast scoring on our good days, we all know we can score hundreds off 120 balls, but we need to dig in off this sort of surface."

On Joe Root: "Joe Root has inspired everyone in the changing room and in this country. His work ethic and the way he goes about his cricket is inspirational over such a long career. Fingers crossed he can make it a massive one tomorrow."

On Ben Stokes' injury: "Your guess is as good as mine, he looked pretty sore out there. Fingers crossed it's nothing too serious."

  6. 'Not how we've always gone about our cricket'published at 18:46 British Summer Time

England batter Ollie Pope, speaking to Sky Sports: "I think because of the lack of pace in the pitch and the style they were bowling there was still movement there but you had to force it through, which, in England, we're not always used to. [It was] not our usual day but a pretty solid day.

"I think at Lord's the outfield is pretty lush, so hopefully we can keep it swinging for a long period of time. With the Lord's slope there is always something there, its not like you're in and you can smack it where you want.

"They bowled pretty wide to me today, I knew the risk was trying to drive it through the covers. I think it was about getting our heads down and the ball is getting soft, and batting gets easier.

"It's not always been the way we've gone about our cricket but I think long term in the game hopefully that will reward us if we can kick on tomorrow. "

Root has faced the most deliveries with a ball that is less than 10 overs old, while being in the 90s (since such records have been kept). He has never been dismissed in this scenario.

I think that's slightly England's day. If India had taken another wicket I might have tipped them.

They've amassed 250 runs from a slow wicket.

Joe Root turns on his heel, he'll return tomorrow. That's a hard fought day, attritional cricket.

The batsmen have had to work hard for every run.

    Root 99, Stokes 39

Ben Stokes defends the final two balls of Akash Deep's over and that's us done for the day at sunny Lord's.

A battling, unfamiliar performance from England takes Joe Root to 99 overnight.

Ben Stokes is saying he can't run for two to get Joe Root his century. A fit Stokes would've gone there.

Pushed out to point and Jadeja again, is there two more there?

    No!

Ben Stokes turns the second run down and Joe Root will likely have to wait until tomorrow for his hundred.

  15. Eng 250-4published at 82.2 overs

    Last over of the day.

Joe Root lashes Akash Deep out through point, Ravindra Jadeja is out on the boundary and collects.

It's just two, and Root moves to 98 while bringing up England's 250.

    Ladybird Before Wicket in coming.

Hmm, ladybirds or flying ants? Maybe they've teamed up to take over the world.

And I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords. I'd like to remind them as a trusted online personality, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground sugar caves.

Anyway, Jasprit Bumrah has taken over at the other end - Joe Root takes two past gully from his first delivery then pushes the next ball through point for a single.

That takes him to 96, and Stokes faces the remaining four deliveries without scoring.

Currently in the Grand Stand and wonder if the delay was due to the large swarm of flying ants that has descended…

Hold on, that's definitely a ladybird sitting on Ben Stokes' shoulder. Maybe it's a ladybird swarm?

I'm going to send BBC Sport's Matthew Henry out in the middle for some important insect identification.

Anyway, Stokes leaves the last two balls of Deep's over, having taken a swatting break between deliveries.

    Ants!

Hold on, I can't find an option in my drop-down for flying ants stopped play.

I mean, I think it's flying ants, if it were bees then they'd be hitting the deck, I imagine.

India want to continue, but Ben Stokes isn't having it.
