Ravindra Jadeja strikes immediately after tea!

I'd just started drafting a simple little entry about play getting back underway, ease back into the action, but no time for that because India have dismissed Ollie Pope with the first ball of the session.

The England number three edges Jadeja's delivery and substitute keeper Dhruv Jurel takes a superb reaction catch standing up to the stumps.

Pope, down on one knee, holds his head in one hand in dismay - the break has done for a century partnership that had worked its way through the entire afternoon session.

    Hello there.

I have returned refreshed and ready for what's set to be an interesting evening session.

We should get going again in about five minutes, with plenty of overs left in the day.

England look to have control as it stands but this day could yet go either way. A Bumrah burst after tea could change things.

Mike Peter is primed to take you through it.

I for one am loving the application of both Root and Pope in this innings. Yes, there have been a few mistimed shots and a couple of play and misses, but in the main, it’s been proper Test cricket. Get in, do the hard yards, and make India stand in the field for two days in 33C heat. Maybe BazBall does have some brains after all…

And there ends a battling session of Test cricket.

Joe Root and Ollie Pope have put away their Bazball instincts and ground it out.

An important partnership for England. Root doing what Root does, another vital knock. Big well done to Pope for battling hard out there

England have had to dig in hard. Ollie Pope is hanging on and he's defending well.

This has been a really good knock so far. In Test cricket you have to earn the right, it's not easy.

Ball should be checked only in stoppages of play. I.e. drinks or between sessions. It would minimise disruptions and give them plenty of time to pick a replacement!

I wonder when he'll start to get twitchy about the big record. Root is 2,600 or so behind.

When you're on a pitch like this, and the field has been spread, there's so much space top play the singles.

England can get the scoreboard ticking, play it into the gaps and rotate the strike.

The 'changing of the ball' antics have to be stopped, for the love of all our sanity! Perhaps a minimum of five overs between requests to change the ball the umpires being able to inspect it whenever they see fit of course!
