Re: Brett 18.08 - Funny how England fans don't mention that when England field they always fail to bowl the allotted overs in a day, but when another team does it there should be penalty runs and all sorts.

  2. new ball

    Eng 243-4published at 80.1 overs

Akash Deep continues with the old ball for one delivery, which Joe Root works out towards mid-on for a single.

And now the India seamer will take the fresh ball, with a little under 15 minutes to go today.

This has been a brilliant innings from Joe Root. I don't really remember how he's got here. He's just accumulated runs.

He's stayed in, occupied the crease and he knows first inning runs are invaluable.

  4. Eng 242-4published at 80 overs

Final over of the old ball, unless India choose to continue with it, and Root and Stokes take a single each off Ravindra Jadeja.

The third umpire walks slowly onto the pitch with the new cherry, giving Stokes the chance to do some more stretching of that groin injury.

  5. Eng 240-4published at 79 overs

Another reverse sweep from Joe Root off Washington Sundar and that single takes him to 90.

Just under 20 minutes left in the day - enough for 10 runs?

Slow over rate? Thoughts on giving extras for each over short on the day? Maybe four runs per over short?

    Brett

  7. Eng 237-4published at 78 overs

    Crikey, that bounced sharply!

Ravindra Jadeja spits the ball past the gloves of Joe Root and Dhruv Jurel collects behind the stumps and appeals.

Shubman Gill goes into conference and decides against reviewing - and rightly so, as it turns out there's nothing on snicko.

Just one run from the over, from a Jadeja over-step.

Are we going to get the big climax at the end of the day with Joe Root 89 not out?

  9. Eng 236-4published at 77 overs

Washington Sundar sends down four dots to Ben Stokes, who doesn't look entirely comfortable out there, before the England batters exchange singles at the end of the over.

Root sweeps Jadeja for four to move to 88

There's Root's second boundary of the session!

He crashes a sweep through mid-wicket off the final ball of Ravindra Jadeja's over, moving to 88.

It's been painstaking but it's been old school, gritty batting from England.

  12. Eng 228-4published at 75 overs

India's spinners are working their way through the overs swiftly as the new ball approaches - we've got five overs to go after this, with just over half an hour to play.

England's batters take two singles from Washington Sunday's eighth over - the off-spinner has conceded 16 runs in total today.

If I was being a glass half-empty kind of guy, the wickets came in clusters of two and two, and if you lose two more then India are on top..

It's a crucial period in the game with the new ball coming.

  14. Eng 226-4published at 74 overs

Ravindra Jadeja replaces Nitish Kumar Reddy and sends down a maiden to Joe Root.

The England number four has 82 from 166 balls - he resumed this session on 54 from 109, and has scored one boundary since tea.

    Stoic.

  15. Eng 226-4published at 73 overs

Joe Root takes a single square off the third ball of Washington's over, and Ben Stokes faces the remaining deliveries without scoring.

Over the last three years, India have bowled the fewest bouncers per innings of any Test team (16). England have bowled the most with 49 per innings and New Zealand the second most with 40.

Naturally there would be a difference with certain teams playing the majority of their matches in more seamer friendly conditions, but this is quite a stark contrast.

Ben Stokes has had some treatment from the physio and after a lengthy delay he looks set to continue.

Washington Sundar will continue from this end, bowling to Joe Root.

It must be a problem Ben Stokes has got with his groin, or he's had that hamstring problem, hasn't he?

It's the groin because the physio has his hand inside the knee.

  19. Postpublished at 17:48 British Summer Time 10 July

    Uh-oh, what's this?

Ben Stokes has called on the physio and is stood with his trousers round his thighs, having shed a pad. A groin injury?

This would be bad news for England if this is anything serious.

That's the shot of the day. A little skip down the wicket and Joe Root managed to play a lovely straight drive for four.
