I think Ben Stokes owes his team-mates and us a timely score.

Maybe England are better at chasing...

    Steve Owen, Middlesbrough

  4. Eng 172-4published at 55 overs

Ben Stokes comes out of the pavilion in a sticky situation both in the match and in terms of his form, having made scores 20, 33, 0 and 33 in this series.

Bumrah rips a bouncer past him to close the over.

It's another batsman who's taken an eternity to leave. On that first angle it looked like Harry Brook was just beaten for pace by Jasprit Bumrah.

It's been a good half an hour for India.

He's bowled him! Harry Brook is still standing and playing the shot he'd have liked to have played but it's too late, I'm afraid.

Bumrah clean bowls Brook as England lose fourth wicket

Takes the top of off stump!

Jasprit Bumrah has his first wicket of the match, bowling Harry Brook with a handy delivery that possibly takes the tiniest of tickles off the bat on the way through.

Brook faced three dots at the end of Bumrah's last over, then four at the start of this one, before the India seamer got his man.

  8. Eng 172-3published at 54 overs

Root and Brook take a single apiece from Jadeja's fourth over.

The India spinner has conceded 13 runs from those 24 balls.

India haven't exploited the short ball tactic too much in this series, but with Brook at the crease now and Smith to come, it could be an effective option. Brook averages 38.7 and Smith 33.0 against bouncers in Test cricket, the two lowest averages against short stuff of all batters in the England squad.

  10. Eng 170-3published at 53 overs

    Ooops.

Joe Root inside edges Jasprit Bumrah's first delivery and it slips past his stumps for two.

A further single takes him to 61, before Brook faces four dots.

To be fair to Pope, he needed to dig in and he did and was out to a superb catch.

And four more for Brook, edging Jadeja through a gap past gully.

Three overs done since tea - we've still only played 52 in the day.

Theoretically we've got 38 overs left, but we obviously won't reach that.

With the Ashes looming, England are going to rue failing to get Jacob Bethell in for the summer - the constant failings of two players will persist Down Under.

    Robert in Billericay

  14. Eng 160-3published at 51 overs

Jasprit Bumrah at the other end.

Joe Root plays out four dot balls from the India seamer, the last of which whips past his helmet while he tries the pull shot, provoking a few half-hearted appeals from behind the stumps.

A single brings Harry Brook on strike and he takes his first four, driving through point.

Problem is, Pope doesn't just seem to struggle with his start - he struggles with every start.

Out comes Harry Brook, who probably had to leave some half-consumed tea snacks on the dressing room balcony.

He sees out three dot balls, then takes a single into the covers.

What is Pope doing there? A complete nothing shot and three hours of hard work instantly undone. Such a frustrating player.

    Mark B

Pope has a lot of talent but he has some incredible brain fades early on. Needs to correct how many times he's out early in either his innings or the session quickly.

That's an incredible catch. Jurel is a marvellous keeper. I'd even wager Pant doesn't take that.

It's a really good catch from the sub keeper. Ollie Pope is on his haunches and stays there for a good 15 seconds.

It shows what a break can do to your concentration. That caught everyone by surprise.

It's just the start India wanted and needed.

Ollie Pope shapes to drive and he's been taken. England lose their third out of nowhere.
