'That's the shot of the day' - Root plays 'lovely' on-drive for four

Nice shot from Joe Root off Nitish Kumar Reddy, timing the ball through mid-on for four.

Only the second four since Stokes' successive ones in the 58th over, and Root's first in the entire session.

That shot brings up the half-century partnership too.

I hope it's many years away, but my gosh are we going to miss Joe Root once he retires from this team.

It's a funny pitch, occasionally it has moved a little bit. It could spin a bit later on.

It's been quite slow and it's been so dry that they'll have had to put a lot of water on the outfield, which must draw water from the square.

Lord's never used to spin on the first day of a Test.

  7. Eng 215-4published at 69 overs

Joe Root and Ben Stokes take a single apiece off Washington Sundar's over.

The India seamer has gone for just 10 runs off his five overs.

It’s been a good series so far. Lucky enough to have tickets for tomorrow. Would be great if Root and Stokes are still there, we can add a few and then see Archer roar in.

There have been a lot of umpire's calls in this series. I think it's evened out between the two teams.

Clipping leg stump on umpire's call - Ben Stokes survives but India retain their review.

I'm surprised they went for it really, Stokes had stepped a fair way down.

Anyway, England took two leg byes off that delivery, added to a Stokes' four through fine leg earlier in the over.

A dot ball closes the over as Stokes waves a bat at it.

The angle from here looked likely to take it past leg stump. Ben Stokes did go a long way in front of his stumps.

A first sight of Nitish Kumar Reddy in this session, and he strikes Ben Stokes on the pads with his penultimate delivery.

The England captain had stepped down the pitch attempting to flick down the leg side and there's nothing from the umpire.

India are going to have a look though, and call for a review.

All Stokes has to do for the rest of the days play is Stick. With. Joe. Nothing more, nothing less. If these two are there in the morning hopefully Stokes can attack a little more.

I think it's even. India will have to pick another two or three wickets before the end of day. If they don't, there'll be pressure on India batters as well.

We know most of their players are stroke players and it wouldn't be easy to play their shots.

It's not a high scoring pitch, it's not doing a lot but it's not one where you can allow the opposition get to 400.

  18. Eng 203-4published at 66 overs

Aha, here's some of that Mohammed Siraj fire.

Joe Root pulls away just the point of delivery and receives some strong words from the India seamer.

Root then points out the spider-cam that's hovering over mid-on and Siraj turns his attention on that, gesticulating for it to be moved.

With the camera out of the way, Root takes a single through backward square from the over's final delivery, denying Siraj a maiden.

Re: Dave 16:53...this feels like the simplest explanation of the difference between Stokes and Crawley’s form. Every time I tune in to Stokes despite his recent run I’m hopeful of a match changing game. For Crawley I’m expecting him to cheaply lose his wicket. The calls for Crawley being dropped feel fair, but Stokes can be on the team sheet for years regardless of form for me.

Joe Root then takes a single of his own through backward square, as England continue to grind out this innings.
