India have been very disciplined. Even after lunch they didn't take any wickets but they bowled really well.

They might've been disappointed they didn't take a wicket between lunch and tea but with the way England batted, it was beautiful to see.

As a Test cricket lover, I enjoyed that session.

Meanwhile here's how England lost two swift wickets at the start of the session.

Ollie Pope was caught behind off the first ball after tea, while Jasprit Bumrah broke the stumps of Harry Brook.

England have played an attacking shot to 29.8% of deliveries faced so far today. This is the lowest percentage in their first innings of the 39 Test matches since Stokes became captain.

  5. Eng 196-4published at 63 overs

Washington Sundar returns for only his second over of the day, and almost dismisses Ben Stokes on a couple of occasions.

The England captain attempts a big drive off a delivery that turned sharply, failing to make contact, then just about keeps out the final ball of the over as it headed towards the stumps.

This is why we love Test cricket. It has been enthralling watching these two sides jockey for position on this first day.

I think Ben Stokes is well aware that England fans and the team are expecting a big score from him. Will be an important innings, he will be feeling the pressure - can tell from his pre-match conference that he knows!

    Root 70, Stokes 16

Mohammed Siraj replaces Akash Deep, and Ben Stokes faces all of the seamer's first over.

The first ball goes for two, with Stokes getting the ball through mid-wicket, then the England captain retains the strike with a last-ball single through point.

The players are taking drinks after an hour of the evening session - we've had 43 England runs from 13 overs, for the cost of two wickets.

Ben Stokes takes a leg side single from the first ball of Ravindra Jadeja's sixth over, then watches from the other end as Joe Root makes his way through five dot balls.

Sorry Steve, Bristol (16.36), Stokes has got a lifetime of credit with England fans and his team-mates.

  12. Eng 192-4published at 60 overs

Joe Root slips Akash Deep's final delivery away through backward square for two.

That takes him to 70 from 135 balls.

It's evenly poised, isn't it? If England get to the end of play with these two then they'll think they'd have done pretty well, but if India get a couple more then they're right in it.

Ravindra Jadeja changes end to replace Jasprit Bumrah and England's batters take three singles from his over.

It's worth remembering the old adage of waiting until both sides have batted before judging a pitch. This ball is nibbling and moving all over the place. Not sure I'd fancy facing Woakes, Stokes and Archer on this!

This is the slowest England have scored runs in a match at home in the Bazball era at around 3.1 an over.

There have been three other times when they scored slower away in Asia when, on each occasion, they were bowled out cheaply.

    Cracking delivery.

Jasprit Bumrah's lifting delivery flies past the edge of Ben Stokes' bat, with the England captain just about managing to avoid offering a catch.

Stokes then gets off the mark from his eighth delivery, turning the ball into mid-wicket for two.
