Whether the ball that dismissed Crawley was a good delivery or not, I feel he isn’t good enough to be opening the batting for England. An average of 31.11 over 56 Tests backs this up. Maybe it’s time for someone else to be given a chance.

At the beginning of the 2023 summer, there was debate around Zak Crawley's place. Jonny Bairstow was returning from injury, and one option to accommodate him was to leave Crawley out.

That began Crawley's most productive spell for England. From the start of that summer, up to when he broke his finger last year, Crawley averaged 43.83.

Since returning in Pakistan, Crawley has averaged 24.76, and that was boosted by a hundred against Zimbabwe. Take that score out (yes, I know he got them), and the average falls to 18.56.

Back comes Jasprit Bumrah for a spell before lunch, replacing Nitish Kumar Reddy.

His third delivery clips the pads of Joe Root's pads and runs away for four leg byes.

Nitish Kumar Reddy has been a double threat this morning, with the most swing (2.6 degrees) and the most movement off the seam (0.9 degrees) of all four bowlers.

His averaged speed has been 80.2mph.

I think India are just in front at the minute. India will want to get one more. This pitch is a good one and it'll get better in the afternoon.

With the heat, it'll get to the stage when spin comes into play.

Both openers took the eye off the ball after the drinks break. They relaxed, thought they had got over the new ball. Then boom, two wickets in one over. The England players have got to stay mentally tough. Build up the pressure on India, make them toil in the mid-day heat. Come on England up your game!

  10. Eng 65-2published at 20 overs

Joe Root picks up three off Nitish Kumar Reddy, seeing his shot past mid-off retrieved on the boundary.

That brings Ollie Pope on strike and he gets his first four off the next delivery, driving away through the covers.

Hold on, are those picnic baskets unattended?!

I'd be off on a pilfering spree - there must be some superb scran in a Lord's picnic, no shrivelled supermarket meal deals here.

I've not seen many players in the top four of Test cricket change so much when they go out there.

I feel like Zak Crawley aligns himself for that straight delivery and if you do that, leave the ball from the right eye line. Leave the wide ones.

The frustration, for me, is Crawley is a lot better than averaging 30. He could be very successful and have a long career playing Test cricket for England, but it won't survive averaging 30.

Akash Deep comes back into the attack to replace Mohammed Siraj - it's a change of ends for him, with the pavilion now at his back.

England take three singles from his first over.

Here's how both of England's openers fell during the first over after drinks.

I'm sure we'll have some correspondents saying Zak Crawley should have done better, but that was a very good delivery from Nitish Kumar Reddy.

Nitish Kumar Reddy's length has been spot on here. To the right-hander, he's challenged them with a great length in the last few overs.

  18. Eng 55-2published at 18 overs

Some lovely stuff from Nitish Kumar Reddy, shaping the ball past Joe Root's bat.

The England veteran is sensible enough to not properly prod at them, but there was a little bit of bat movement as he made his judgement.

I'll be honest, after the first Test I thought India's pace bowling attack looked mostly terrible and heavily reliant on Bumrah. All of a sudden it looks a serious attack with depth.

I'm sure the England dressing room is still calm. Obviously, I've been in there and they won't be panicking.
