Hopefully a nice position for Pope. He can let Root absorb the pressure and just take his time.

Just joining us for the afternoon? A lot of the drama from the morning happened in one over from an unlikely bowler...

Thank you, Michael. On both counts although I'm not sure that's true.

A few of the Indian fielders are already out in front of me doing some stretches and slip catching practice.

Oh yeah, I forgot we were doing that.

Well, there's 11 names, job done.

Right, I'm off to raid the Lord's picnic baskets like a cricketing Yogi Bear - I'll have to get on a train, but it'll be worth it.

To follow on from me, here's someone that's smarter than your average live texter - it's Matthew Henry.

Not all that long to go until the players are back on the pitch.

Here's a Joe Root four to get you in the mood.

Since Stokes and McCullum took charge, England have batted first on 17 occasions. This morning's run rate of 3.32 is England's slowest scoring rate in the first session of a match in this era.

Although disappointing they got out as they did, you could still argue that Duckett and Crawley did their job here by seeing off a very difficult first hour with the new ball.

Definitely not the start to the England innings we've grown accustomed to in the Bazball era! The run rate is under four and we haven't even reached 100 by lunch!

I'd say it's been an even session. Neither team has really grabbed it yet and with the conditions as they are, it is hot and the pitch is dry, you'd expect England need 350+ to really put India under pressure.

    Pope 12, Root 24

Nitish Kumar Reddy takes the last over before lunch, switching ends.

Just a single comes from it as Ollie Pope takes one through point.

A well-balanced session, perhaps India's just about having removed both England openers after drinks.

Crawley was our highest run scorer in the 2023 Ashes, his height will be an asset on the bouncy pitches in Aus. I know he can be frustrating but I would stick with him.

One single from Jasprit Bumrah's over, likely the penultimate one before lunch.

The India seamer has gone for 13 runs from his eight overs today.

Whisper it quietly but this looks like it’s shaping up to be one of these proper Joe Root innings

Ben Hansford in Clent (I accept no responsibility if he is out next ball)

Full delivery from Akash Deep and Joe Root whips him away fine for four, beating the fielder running round on the ropes.

Ollie Pope adds three more from the over's final delivery, hitting the ball square, with Yashasvi Jaiswal managing to stop it crossing the boundary.
