Watch the best shots as Joe Root scores his 8th Test century at Lord's

I don't want to say it has been a slower afternoon session but Simon Mann has just been talking about his Danish yoga teacher in LA on TMS.

  2. Eng 130-2published at 43.3 overs

That's four, however. A classic Joe Root back-cut.

It nudges up the England run-rate, which is down below three per over.

  3. Eng 126-2published at 43.1 overs

There might be just a hint of inswing for Nitish Kumar Reddy as he lets go of this new (old) ball.

  4. Eng 126-2published at 43 overs

    Pope 29, Root 42

This is turning into a shambles. The over continues but at its end we're stopping again for the fourth umpire to bring out his briefcase of balls.

I don't think they changed it the first time but now we're going to have another delay as they finally do.

After 42 overs and less than four hours of cricket, we're going to have our first ball change.

The one they started with has gone soft and will not go through the umpire's rings.

That's guided away nicely by Joe Root for four right in front of the England dressing room.

Root guides Reddy delivery down to third man for four

Was this an edge? Has Joe Root cleverly found a gap in the gully?

It probably depends on your persuasion. Either way it's four more to Root's and England's total.

It was never a catching chance anyway, given Root is playing with hands as soft as a trendy Neapolitan pizza dough.

  8. Eng 116-2published at 41 overs

    Pope 24, Root 37

He isn't the first but Akash Deep is yet to come to terms with the Lord's slope. He has not looked the bowler he did last week so far.

  9. Eng 115-2published at 40 overs

KL Rahul is the latest India player to nip off the field, joining Rishabh Pant who hurt his finger earlier on.

If it is a serious issue for Pant it could be a major factor in this series.

England still look happy to play the long game in the baking London sun. This partnership has been one of few highlights but this boundary from Joe Root a couple of overs ago was one...

England faced 28 consecutive dot balls earlier - the second highest number under Brendon McCullum.

They faced 30 consecutive dot balls against India at Edgbaston in 2022, with Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow at the crease that time.

  12. Eng 110-2published at 38 overs

Nitish Kumar Reddy concedes just the single from his seventh over. He's bowled as many today as Akash Deep, the man who took 10 in Birmingham last week. He's more than doing his job.

It's never easy when you're a bowling side in this heat, even though the Indian guys are used to this weather, you really feel it here..

It's a perfect place to play a Test match. I always dreamed of playing at Lord's.

'It's a lovely shot' - Root drives Siraj for four

Root takes the enthusiastic Mohammed Siraj through the off side now in the form of a lovely square drive. That nudges England's score up by four, as do the leg byes that follow as Siraj goes in search of the pads.

Mark Wood has just revealed Root missed their dinner together yesterday because he was having a massive afternoon nap.

It seems to have done the trick so far.

  15. Eng 101-2published at 36 overs

    Pope 21, Root 30

Close your eyes and picture Joe Root clipping the ball into the leg side.

That's how England have just edged their way beyond 100 to the sound of well-mannered applause.

England have faced 77% dot balls in the first 35 overs today. This is the highest percentage they have faced at this stage in their first innings for three years.

Not many have called him that before but has the two wickets so far...

    Danger!

Joe Root calls Ollie Pope through for a single. After a bit of scampering Pope gets out the full-length dive but would have been out had Yashasvi Jaiswal's throw from mid-wicket hit.

Pope would have been out for 19 from 66 balls.

Matt: This is good from England, Root in particular, soak up the pressure and wait for the bad ball. It’s tough going out there but this is also Test cricket, it isn’t meant to be easy!

Rishabh Pant has now wandered off at the far end. Does he just need some treatment? Is it a worry? He's in a devastating form with the bat, remember.

Dhruv Jurel has come on and taken the gloves.
